Flavalanche? More like flavafail…read more I was highly anticipating taking my American friends to what I thought would be a high point of their visit to Bristol - a truly wonderful city in the main. However, my expectations were immediately lowered when I observed the far from endearing exterior of the shop. I thought the situation could have been rectified by the novelty of the product inside, however, this was far from the case due to just 2 from 4 machines having any fro-yo in them. Nonetheless, my disenchantment only increased when I found out that 2 of the 4 remaining fro-yo flavors were melted - how did this place pass a food inspection?! One of the two flavors was coffee, so if you aren't a coffee-lover like me, you were only left with the one - original. Now, onto the toppings. The choices were limited and I was not impressed by the lack of fresh fruit. The interior decor of the shop made it uninviting. It was dark and dingy and the worker was not there to greet us as we walked in. I would have hoped for more hospitality. The worker sat on her phone while we attempted to serve our runny, melted yogurt and did not offer to help or even apologize for the ruined product. Just make sure you get yourself down to the waterfront, next to the Arnolfini and slightly closer to the bridge and you'll find a beautiful little ice cream shop; no ice lollies or annoying music here. They just do rich, tasty ice cream made from locally sourced West Country ingredients. It really is prefect ice cream and they aren't stingy with the potions. I just had a mint choc chip and clotted cream vanilla combo, piled high and then melting all down my hand and t-shirt. Totally worth it though. It's a great little spot to wander to after lunch; you get to be by the river and in the sun, watching the boats go by. The staff serving us were lovely and jolly, would you want your ice cream sold to you any other way!? I ask you.

The booths are a purple leather American diner vibe. The menu is absolutely huge. You order at the counter and it is delivered to you. There is scarcely a stretch of shops in Bristol which isn't blighted by the black and orange Gusto logo. My visit to the Clifton branch was frustrating and disappointing. There is by far too much choice on the menu, and there isn't possibly enough time to take in all of the options written up on the chalkboards behind the counter. Fast-moving and slapdash, the service demands of you an instant choice and order, and it's just not possible to make the most of their "build your own" idea for salads and sandwiches. So, selection hastily made, I retreated to a table, and my panini didn't arrive for a whole 10 minutes. It was impossible not to get agitated and annoyed about this because it's all on show; you can see everything they're doing while you wait for them to reheat your panini, and you wait, and wait, while they persist in not addressing your order, so desperate are they to keep taking orders from people in the queue. By the time they get around to making the sandwiches people have ordered, they've forgotten whose is whose, and have to call the orders out in a shouty, frantic way. My cheese and ham panini was the worst I've ever had. The cheese was absolutely boiling and had a horrible, gloopy texture that was much more like cheese sauce. There was so much of it in the panini I had to actually scrape it off. For £3.95, I expected higher quality ingredients, served with much more care.

At this one on Princess Street you'll find great service, a relaxed atmosphere and exceptionally comfortable chairs to chill out in. Their toasted sandwiches and paninis are filling and tasty, and their tea and coffee is just as good. To any veggies I recommend The Gusto Special - aubergine, hummus, egg and parsley. It may not make you popular but it tastes delicious. An affordable and reliably good lunch can be had here are a tiring day of shopping in Clifton Village.

A glance at the food, made me surprised that a cafe in the busy center caters alot for a gluten free diet. Every category of food here has a gluten free option. They do sandwiches, paninis, ciabattas and big salads. Their fillings are generous, and one's that I found interesting were brie & pear, roast chicken with vegetables, and a chunky meat feast! Cakes served here are brownies, lemon polenta cake, honeybuns (all these three are gluten free), and more traditional deserts like apple pie and cheesecakes. If you want something sweet after your food that's not a cake, they do freshly made smoothies, frozen yoghurt and ice cream too, where you can choose your toppings. A multitude of other flavours are also available here. Although Bedminster Parade may be a far cry from our romantic visions of sun drenched Italian streets, Don Peppe's Gelati is a much needed ray of sunshine in an otherwise drab location. The venue also sells sandwiches, paninis, cakes, milkshakes, teas and coffees, all at competitive prices. So if you're in need of a hit of exoticism and are in the area, Don Peppe's Gelati is the closest you'll come to tasting the Mediterranean sunshine.

Not the best drink you'll have but a tasty sugar rush if you're lagging while shopping.

It seems that ever since Shakeaway started to do really well as pretty much the only decent milkshake bar loads of other similar types such as Sblended started popping up around the place which are pretty much identical! Sblended is somewhere that offers a large variety of different milkshakes, you basically can choose between any sweet snack you fancy (from skittles to chocolate fudge cake) and they mix this with ice cream and milk to create you a personal shake! I think it's a brilliant idea, and they do taste amazing (I would always recommend the oreo cookie one!), but because I was such a loyal customer to Shakeaway (haha) I always go here instead... The one thing I would say about these places however is that they are overpriced, they charge around £2.50 for a standard sized milkshake which is pretty hefty! They do offer loyalty cards though if you are a fan, and also a student discount of %10 which is worth having. Overall I love my milkshakes and love the variety of these places so I would recommend Sblended to thirsty shoppers especially in the summer months!
