Pear drops in big tubs, sizzling candy in straw-like tubes, gum powder in sachets and sweeties in mini baby bottles are just some examples of what you'll find here. Finding a roll of Hubba Bubba tape gum gave me a little smile. There is also pick and mix here with the usuals, but also some great huge marshmallow worms and funny tiny blue and white gummy whales (or at least I think they are whales). From standard coke bottles to liquorice alsorts, there's a really good mix of sweets, along with a wall of chocolate bars and comedy sweet shop items. Phew! And to a bigger and better shop. This always used to be my 'secret chocolate factory' - right in the heart of Bristol, tucked away down a lane, where they hand-make absolutely wonderful chocolates for high-end retailers. Yet you could walk right in to their premises and buy mis-shapes right there, in a paper bag. Goodness, I brought so many people here to show off my knowledge of this hidden gem. You'd walk in, and the cocoa smell was so wonderfully overpowering... Someone would hear the bell and come and serve you, still with their hat and gloves from working on the confectioner's table. Aside from the delicious smell and delicious chocolates (my favourite was always the Lilac Crème), it was a privilege to see a niche industry in action. Now Guilbert is in a 'proper' shop. Go up Corn St, follow the road around to the left and there it is. A traditional chocolate shop! They deserve their success, the chocolates are utterly delicious and always beautifully presented. You know that phrase: "kid in a candy store?"…read more Think: candies displayed in old glass jars, chocolates made from the U.K. (bought boxes of rose cream filled one for mom and dark chocolate covered ginger for my friend), toffee, caramels, gummies and even some American candy. You think it, they probably have it. This place has that nostalgic atmosphere and sweet aromas which make you feel so good just by being in the shop. You can't go wrong with chocolate anything and English toffee that'll stick to your teeth; these are the stuff that your friends dream of. And it's so much better than that Roman Bath magnet that's just gonna sit there and collect dust. Thank me later! ;-)

The idea for this aladdin's cave of sugary delights came from a sepia photograph the owners saw on a confectionnary newspaper. And when you walk through its doors you'll see how authentically fifties this sweet shop is. The owners of the shop obviously love what they do, and will enthusiastically talk you through all their stock and help you make your choice. I can guarantee if you go back to your office with a bag of sweets from Mr Simms - you'll be the most popular person at work.
