The incredibly knowledgeable, incredibly friendly, incredibly engaging cheesemonger from France basically only had eyes for me (or so it felt; they take care of their customers so well here! I've never felt so spoiled!), and spent quite a bit of time both talking cheese with me and letting me try loads of different samples from locally made sources. I got quite a few options, and he did a spectacular job at giving me just enough of each so that I could have a Wine + Cheese Night For One back at my AirBnB. I also picked up some crackers, olives, and incredibly garlicky hummus. If you love cheese, do yourself a favor and come here. On the way down the hill from the car park I popped into another gift shop that seemed to be offering cheese tasting, but the guy behind the counter had no customer service skills and I just left. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company shop, however, in extreme contrast to the first shop, has staff members just standing around behind the counter with the soul duty of offering you a sample of all the various varieties of cheese that they make in the factory behind the shop. You don't feel awkward at all asking to try them all. I DID buy some before I left the shop and it wasn't touristy expensive. I wish that there was a shop like this in my town. Not a lot of photos being taken but everyone in the shop was saying cheese. Pity it is 388 miles away.
