I found this place a little bit disappointing when I ate here last month at an event - perhaps because I was expecting more ... after all from what I read there was a young chef in the kitchen who would be creatively tweaking traditional Viennese dishes. Also because it is in walking distance to where I live, I was hoping to discover a new gem. No such luck in my opinion.
The ambience of the restaurant is nothing special at all, the lighting very bright. The first course was by far the best - a really delicious Leberkäse. But it was also a tiny portion ... still it was tasty. The next course was totally traditional and not really tweaked at all. The Schweinsbraten were of very good quality in their traditional transluscent gravy ... perfectly fine but nothing out of the ordinary. (Two weeks ago at a friend's house, I had Schweinsbraten with a spicy green-apple sauce...now that was a cool & tasty modern rendition) Their were a couple of spoonful's of cabbage and two pretty bland potato knödeln. Can someone add any spices or ingredients to these Knödeln if you're updating dishes? Otherwise I feel like I'm just eating warm potato dough. There were no condiments on the table - you actually had to ask for salt & pepper .... and No - they did not have a hot sauce to jazz things up a bit. With the dinner, I added in a beer and a wine. Although I was still actually a little hungry as the portions were def on the small side, I realized I couldn't order desert on another wine or beer since by that time I was running out of money as my bill was up to around 25 Euro (34 dollars). For that much money, I really expect more - and there are so many other places in Vienna and in my neighborhood where one can find more creative dining. So even though this place was okay, I doubt if I ever head back unless I'm on someone else's expense account .... and I have a bottle of hot sauce in my pocket! But the Leberkäse appetizer was truly excellent. read more
