I am very happy with my overall experience at Anthony Garubo. I booked an appointment with Basile because of some of the reviews I had read online and I am beyond impressed by him. He was very pleasant to talk to. A great guy who has been with the salon for 20 years and it shows. He made me feel very comfortable and within 5 mins of our conversation I knew my hair was in good hands. I've had layers for a very long time and wanted to go back to getting a Bob/Lob which I do every 3-4 years and he did a stellar job. He took his time to explain the cut, asked every step of the way if I was okay with the length, and did such a fantastic job. I would recommend him hands down. He's very reasonable and cuts like a true professional. So happy to have found him. Excellent service, clean and hygienic environment and I will definitely be returning just to get my haircut from him. Sad to say this was one of the worst haircut experiences I've ever had, if not the worst. My stylist was 10 minutes late to the salon, which normally I'd be totally okay with, but the entire appointment was rushed as a result. The stylist told me to bring in photos, which they barely looked at, rushing me to the wash station. I asked for long, blended layers and a short face frame, and it seems like they did the opposite of everything I asked for. I was given only one layer--way too short, not blended, and choppy. The face frame is essentially non-existent. For a $70 haircut, I expect to be blown out at the end, but instead they diffused my hair with way too much product, even after I mentioned to them that I can't use heavy products. My hair was greasy upon walking out of the salon, and I left feeling like my hair was dirtier than before. I also felt pressured into buying another $70 worth of products that I don't need, with little to no explanation of the benefits of each--even after I mentioned at this point numerous times that I can only use certain types of products. They were brought to the cash register before I even had a chance to read the bottles, because again, it felt like they were rushing and dismissing me and my concerns. I unfortunately would not recommend this salon experience--please ensure all your stylists are receptive and considerate of clients' wants and needs, and that any lateness of the stylist not be at the burden of those who pay for your service. read more

My husband and I have used this salon for 3 years with mixed reviews but because it is conveniently located and we can both go. We will not be returning after today. With his stylist on leave for a period my husband just had his first cut with someone new. See attached photos. The explanation given was an issue with the clippers used. As repeat customers I was very disappointed not only that this happened (OK clippers have issues), but by the lack of accountability or integrity in charging the full $50. The salon never disappoints. I have been coming here on and off for over 20 years. (it is $$$ so I can't always afford it.) Ashley does my color, but if she is not available I just make an appointment with another stylist, because they are all good. They do great haircuts and if you bring a picture in they will try to modify it to your particular hair texture. Mariana is a terrific assistant and today she gave me a great "massage" during my rinse. She took her time showing me their new product line, while styling my curly hair. This is a high end salon, with prices that reflect the service and setting Anthony Garubo Salon delivers. Note: they recently instituted a fee if you pay with a credit card. Odd that the manager who promised to check in with me at check in and check out never spoke to me though I saw her on the floor. END UPDATE Went in today for appointment. Lots of very beautiful hairstyles on lots of different women. Long consult with senior stylist. Expressed my concern about not wanting short hair, how I've been growing it out for 5 months. Left with a wet look like I used LA Style product from the 1980s and about 5" chopped off as opposed to the 1/2-1" we discussed. Also totally wrong haircut than the one requested. Came home my husband said oh it's short. Showed my mom and she said "not so bad". $92 for wet look and not too bad? The stylist was very nice so I'm not going to call her out but FFS, this is the most talked about place in town. I expected better than to be butchered. read more

I have been coming here for 2 years and though there are a lot of good stylists here, not all the stylists have the same strengths or talents, and that could be said for any salon. I do like this salon and the stylists are very nice, but I just haven't found one who is consistent or the best fit for me. I like to wear my hair in a longer length bob, just above my shoulders. I don't like layers or texturizing at the ends. It's so important for a stylist to be both skilled at cutting, but also at listening! The best stylists I have ever had in the history of all my haircuts have been really good listeners and consistently respectful regarding final length. Having said that, the stylists and management at Anthony Garubo Salon genuinely care about the clients and want clients to leave happy, and return again. If you receive a haircut or service that you were unhappy with, they act swiftly to make it right. Whether it means pairing you with a different stylist who might be a better fit or providing a complimentary service. They really do try to make clients happy and I can't say that all salons offer that level of care or concern for their clients. read more

Nick is amazing! I tried to get a lob haircut at a different salon and was so unhappy with it that I was hesitant to ever try & get another. However, Nick at Anthony Garubo did such an incredible job. Truly exceeded my expectations. I don't think there has ever been a time in my whole life that I got *exactly* what I envisioned for my hair--I didn't even have a picture to show him. He was so sweet and really put in a lot of effort to make sure I was happy with my haircut. Also have to give a huge shoutout to the entire Anthony Garubo Salon that had the absolute best safety protocols under COVID. I've been super vigilant about staying in, but after hearing how many serious protocols they were taking, I felt comfortable enough to go. They do an immediate temperature check & provide you hand sanitizer as soon as you walk in (and the stylist sanitizes their own hands too!), everyone who was in the salon was required to wear masks at all times. I was really lucky that only one other client was in the salon who was at least 10 ft away--they are making sure to limit capacity. Also everything I touched was sanitized right before and after I made contact. They even sanitized my debit card when I got it back! I'm so happy with my cut and the entire experience. read more

I don't know why I ever went to another salon! I've been going to Anthony Garubo for years but every so often I get curious about what else is out there. Every time I go somewhere else, I end up disappointed. I recently went to another salon in Summit and was absolutely not satisfied with my haircut. I should've told them I wasn't happy but I didn't want to be that person who complains so I stayed quiet. I decided to call AG to see if they could help. I called the salon to make an appointment and they were able to fit me in just a couple hours later! Upon arriving, I met my stylist, Camille. I told her what happened with my hair and she immediately made me feel confident that she could fix it. I have a ton of hair and she really took her time it and gave me exactly what I had envisioned. I was refferred to Stephanie at the Salon a few years back by a friend. I'm so grateful I was. Stephanie is great and a genius with color. My hair never looked so good! :) She is as nice as she is talented. The place is clean, staff friendly and accomadating. I'm sort of surprised that this place doesn't have more reviews... it's been in business forever. I used to go in middle school/ high school and then my stylist left and so did I. But, many years later when I was home for a visit and in DESPERATE need of a hair dye, I loved that i could make a same day appointment. They re-vamped the interior, and are very customer service oriented. My stylist- Ashley- was amazing. She cared much more about my hair than I did. I had four inches of brown hair roots growing out some lightened color. She gave me a consult before the color, and asked me real questions about my hair... like how often i cut and color it. When I wanted to go light, she resisted-- as I hate coming in to the salon--- but then made it better than I could have imagined. She gave me highlights, and a base color and told me how to wash it. Yes, there is a bit of a sell for the products, and as much as I hate to say it--- they are amazing... much better than my pantene. Her assistant, Charlie (I think), was funny, and upbeat, and always offering me more coffee. I went back a week later for a trim with Jessy--- who gave me a painless and simple cut and some layers... and may have convinced me to get my hair cut more than once a year! Tip= they keep all your color codes and stylists on file-- so you don't have to remember the names. And tip is cash only. read more

I have been going to Anthony Garubo for years and years. They have seen me through long hair, short hair...and back again. Currently I am in the short hair camp and I just had my 2nd hair cut with Kyle. She really listened to what I liked and did not like about my last hair cut (my first with her) and I am loving this cut. The only times I have switched stylists was because they moved out of state (Eduardo, you are still the BEST!) or left to raise their children. Dawn at the front desk is awesome, always helping to get you the appointment you need. I have also recently been to Ashley for color. I had been doing my own for some time due to a money crunch. Ashley took the time to find out what I was looking for and how often I could reasonable expect to come back for follow up visits. When she saw me a few days later getting my hair cut she asked how I liked it. I was still not sure and she offered for me to come in to fix whatever I needed fixed so that I loved it. I chose not to, but I was impressed with that level of care and service. I already have my next appointment with her scheduled! As an FYI, I am on their email list and I always call about the rising star opportunities. That is when one of the rising star stylists gives hair cuts (about $20) while being coached by a senior stylist. I had 2 amazing cuts, even going from long to short. I was never worried because they are being watched constantly to make sure they are doing a great job. And hey, a glass of wine or cup of coffee with your hair cut doesn't hurt! Pretentious, expensive and hard-to-schedule. Anthony runs a tight ship in his Maplewood salon which he's had for 30+ years. Very large turnover in stylists, which would explain why people dislike him. A haircut starts at $55 which is more than a haircut in NYC. If you only go in for color, be prepared to pay extra for a blow-out. Anthony hires stylists out of beauty school, not experienced stylists and you basically start with whomever they assign you. The more years the stylist is with the salon, the more expensive they are, although their cuts remain the same. If you want Maplewood, try Staynd salon near the train station. If you are open to other places, there are plenty of good salons in South Orange and Millburn. read more

Let me tell you as someone who loves a quality item .... they hit it out of the ball park! First off costumer service is 10 out of 5 honestly excellent. Second, I have fine curly hair and typically products for curly hair just don't work and my hair just gets to dry and not to nice basically. But! after using their curly system products it has been a game changer. My hair is textured and not frizzy plus it just looks alive. I LOVE IT! You can tell it is just quality. I hate to give such a poor review for a local business, but if it means saving another girl from this experience, so be it. I've just moved to NJ and had no idea where to go for a cut. I chose it based on some Facebook reviews. When I booked my appointment, I made sure to note that I have great curls that are easy for me to work with, but I needed layers and reshaping. Simple enough... it's what I've done for years. I went in with a specific style in mind and showed many instagram photos of the cut, plus some of my own photos of similar cuts from my past. Couldn't have been clearer. It was obvious the stylist was inexperienced, but he seemed like he listened. He honestly gave me one of the best blowouts I've ever had- it lasted me a whole week. But right away, I saw that he didn't come close to what I asked for. I politely said so, and he said that I should try it out for a week and if I didn't love it, could come back to get it fixed. When I washed out the blowout, the curls weren't layered- they looked so silly, I had to pull my hair back. So I came back. He was rude and snarky, and told me that he wouldn't have time to blow out my hair so I had to be ok with leaving with my hair wet. Fine. Then he was laughing at me when I told him what I didn't like about the cut, and what I wanted. Fine. Then laughed at me when I calmly told him I felt like he was now cutting way too much of my hair (even though inside I was having a proper holy sh*t my hair! moment). He was obviously really offended that I came back, but seriously dude- you're a hair stylist. It's your job to give ppl good cuts that they're happy with. And I was honestly super polite and calm the whole time. It got even more uncomfortable when he confronted me about not being happy with what I was getting, so he insisted that the receptionist credit me for my cut-- which I didn't even ask for. I felt so uncomfortable and awkward that I insisted on leaving. Hair was still wet. The receptionist at least tried to offer me someone else to look at my hair, but it was so uncomfortable there, I had to leave. And thank God I did. By the time I got home, it had finally dried and I could see how much damage was done. This is by far the WORST hair cut I have ever received. He cut off so much of the length, so much of the volume. AND it is all uneven. It's not symmetrical, the layering isn't smooth... it's choppy and it looks ridiculous. My husband saw me and said, "oh boy, you can't go to work looking like that!" Imagine!? It is so obvious that the stylist lacks skill and experience. It's a real shame. I can't believe that they would pair me with someone so unable to cut curly hair, and that no manager or senior stylist had met with me on my return-to-fix-it visit. Poor quality cut, and poor quality service by the salon. You would think that small local businesses couldn't afford to lose new, potentially long term local patrons. I'm going to have to pull my hair back or blow it out until it grows out. Curly hair takes forever to grow out. And I will never set foot in that salon again. read more

I have thick, relaxed black hair. This salon has cared for me at varying lengths, lob through mid back. I have had great blowouts from multiple stylists over the years. Nick is my current go to. He does a fantastic and quick job every time. Kenya has cut and processed my hair for many years with minimal burning and high level of care for the health of my hair.
