Beware of hidden fees! When you go to checkout they tack $5.00 on to your bill. When asked what this goes towards they now call it " green recycling " fee. When I explained I don't choose to pay for that they tell you it's not a choice . Really??? Where is my $5.00 going ? It used to be called " credit card processing fees" Completely outrageous. If anyone wants to DM me I can give you a list of very high end salons that charge the same pricing as Zoku ,without extra " fees" going into someone's pocket . Incredibly disappointed with this salon! Booked cut and highlights via the MINDBODY app. Since you can't choose what level stylist you want through the app, the salon booked me for highlights with a senior level colorist without letting me know beforehand. The saying, "The customer is always right," does not apply to them. What should've been no more than $200 for a cut and color, ended up costing me over $300. And the colorist even had to fix a mistake I pointed out to her after my hair was all done and dry and I'm still not very happy with it. It's also not the first time I've highlighted my hair. I spoke with Zoku and was assured they had an expert on cutting curly hair & recommended Jackie. My hair is curly but I wear it blown out in a voluminous long layered style. I have always gotten compliments on my cut and style & am very good with styling it. Jackie's price for a cut is $155. I figured for that price it would have to look good. This is hard to write because Jackie was very nice, but, I want to warn others as I wish someone had warned me. The haircut I got is horrifying, it's nothing like the pictures I showed her or the style I had going in. She actually removed an entire panel of hair in the middle of my head behind my ear- lopped off at least 5" and there is a "hole" where I once had hair. It is absolutely hideous and will take a year to grow out. Everyday I have to wake up and look at it I'm sick to my stomach. I txtd Jackie the next day and she was nice and offered to tweek the cut but there's nothing to tweek, my layers were destroyed. I don't even have a style now- it looks like someone took a scissor & just cut out chunks randomly around my head. I'm embarrassed to go out and be seen in public. After telling a few other women what happened to me, another woman actually said she had her layers ruined there too. Do your research before going to this salon. I am 52 years old and sadly, this is the absolute worst haircut I have ever had in my life. UPDATE: since writing this I have received a full refund for my haircut. Mimosas on sundays...sold. I came here for the first time and have been craving a new place to rely on for my brow and hair needs. I went to Diana for brow tint and touch up and a week later I still have tint and am extremely happy with the shape! only $20 when some places I have traveled to are $40+ for just tint. Ridiculous. So happy I found Zoku. On Sunday, I had my hair cut at 5pm (so nice that they have Sunday hours) and immediately when I walked in the door I was offered bottomless mimosas. Not cheap champs either. Johanna cut my hair and was a pleasure to talk to. She gave me a tin trim and nice shape which is exactly what I was looking for. $70 later I felt that I got my moneys worth with the excellent service, stellar haircut, and drinks! Given all the great reviews, I was very excited to hopefully find a salon closer to home instead sticking with my salon in the City. I got both a cut with Christine and a color/highlights with Zoe and was a bit disappointed from a color perspective. I went in first for a cut with Christine which was a good experience - we talked about ideas and she listened and gave suggestions. I was afraid I would feel rushed as she was busy and had other customers but she did take time with the cut even after the blow dry. It's grown out nicely and I would go back to her. At that time, I also got a color consultation with Zoe and made an appt to come back. When I did, we talked about what would work and she was honest about what she thought would look good as well as the maintenance involved. Her team did the base color, she did the highlights, and her team finished up with the gloss, etc. Zoe checked on how it was going throughout. I offered to blow out my own hair and found it strange when no one who had worked on me came to check on me or the final color. I took myself to the front to pay and was surprised at how much it was as she never told me the final price. As the co-owner of the salon, I was surprised that she let a customer leave that way and also did not disclose what pricing would be when we finalized talking about what we would be doing. Also given the pricing, I did not find the job to be outstanding - any salon could have done the same. read more

I had very high expectations of this place from the reviews and from the prices they are charging for their services. I fell into the trap that if they charge a lot it must be awesome. Lesson learned that is not true when it comes to ZoKu. I was very disappointed with my experience for several reasons. 1) My $125.00 haircut by Jackie was not worth the money. It pains me to think about how much I paid for the cut that frankly looks like it could be from an amateur stylist. It was uneven and really does not look great or like the picture I showed her. 2) It did take me a week to determine that my hair was uneven, which they did offer to fix for me. However, I was surprised that no apology was given by anyone for this inconvenience, Jackie actually seemed annoyed. Upon mentioning to the front desk that a $125.00 haircut should not be uneven, they blew me off and said it happens. In my opinion it should not happen if you are one of the senior stylists. 3) The fancy highlighting technique they offered to use is a lot more which I didn't realize until the bill. He could have mentioned it since I was new.... 3)They ran behind schedule by a lot for my original appointment and fix appointment. I really wanted to like this place since a good salon is hard to find. But I felt like I got mediocre service for both the cut and highlight that was not worth over $400.00 I spent once tipping was done. read more

So - I've lived here for 14 months now... and I've had my haircut once. That tells you how high-maintenance I am. My guy has been going to his stylist for years and when he suggested that I go to the same person, I was a bit... thrown off. I mean - he always comes home looking like a rock star, but men's hair and women's hair can be so different. Alas, I was booked an appointment and dragged there (most likely before my guy was tired of getting my locks caught on everything (particularly in his mouth). From the moment I at down with Manny, I had a glass of wine in my hand and a smile on my face. He was diligent in listening to my needs, my fears (no short hair!), and ensuring that he built my trust before beginning (because, you know.. hair is a scary thing to lose!) I walked out of there with a new, low-maintenance style that bounced as I paraded to the car. And while I'm never going to be the most frequent customer, Ill certainly be a loyal one. UPDATE: HAIRCUT 2014 EDITION Yes folks - I went back for my annual haircut! Manny greeted me with a huge hug and we spent the entire time talking about his travels, how he speaks five languages, and his new motorcycle. Although a lot of reviews on here mention the steep price preventing them from returning, I'm an avid believer in "you get what you pay for" when it comes to hair. People often forget that products are just as important as the talent at a salon, and your money is being spent on hair that not only looks beautiful, but is healthy and strong as well. I'd rather pay extra knowing my hair isn't being severely damaged or fried when changing the color. That being said, the talent at Zoku is in direct correlation with the high-end products. I started with Danielle for highlights (after visiting another pricey salon in the area and being told my hair was going to fall out if I touched it again) and she put me at ease, assuring me that this was not the case (and that there were many options, like OLAPLEX, which would strengthen my hair, while giving me the desired color I wanted). Low and behold, after my first visit, my hair not only looked amazing, but felt healthy and did not fall out . I've gone back twice since, each time going a little lighter, and my hair looks and feels amazing. Danielle is so friendly and personable and amazing at what she does. I can't imagine myself ever going to anyone else. I had my first cut experience with Manny last week, which solidified my overall happiness with Zoku. Not only is he super sweet and genuine, but he really knows what he's doing when it comes to cutting hair. You can sense the passion he has for his craft as he explains what he is doing while he cuts, and that is extremely comforting. He takes the time to listen to your wants and needs and produces exactly that. I am in love with my color and cut thanks to Manny and Danielle. They are the dynamic duo for perfect hair. I've sent friends and family to them both since and all of them are just as obsessed as I am. *As a side-note, I've spent 8+ hours at salons on a Saturday, feeling like the stylists were overbooked and stressed. This has never been the case at Zoku. Danielle is SO FAST, not because she is rushing, but because she is that good and attentive. Manny also apologized for keeping me waiting for 2 minutes last Saturday, and I had to laugh because I've never been in an out of a salon for full-highlights and a cut/blowout in less than 3 hours. It is so nice to not waste an entire Saturday in a salon, when days off are few and far between. I've come here upon the recommendation from my boyfriend's mother who has been a regular at Zoku for years. I was in desperate need of a change - my hair was flat and dry and lifeless - so I made an appointment to dye it with Danielle. I never, ever, ever want my hair dyed by anyone else. Danielle was great for me because she's young and is able to give great input in having an edgy hairstyle. She gave me a bolyage style that complemented my complexion very well. I literally get compliments everywhere on my hair and I point them to all to Danielle at Zoku. I've jumped around stylists here for haircuts and I think I found a match with Gil. I love my haircut so far, but I'll wait to make a final decision after I've washed my hair! I won't give it 5 stars, because I think the price is a tad ridiculous. I understand the clientele, but to charge the same amount for a root-touch up as you do for a full dye is utterly insane. Probably the only reason I only go a few times a year. read more

I have found that they are not consistant in the work they do. I did not get the color that I asked for or paid for and they damaged my hair pretty badly. He went above and beyond to assure my mother was satisfied with her hair, and made her feel extra special. I wish the salon website would his photo and name up there because as someone who worked very hard that day to pamper my mom, other people should know and give him a shot at doing some magic to their hair. My hairstylist for 10 years got promoted and left for DC to run her own salon! Good for her but sad for me.... Took me 4 long years and 2 different salons. I think I've found my new hairstylist! My hubs and I are going to Gil...I really like him. He'll ask what u want to do and if he doesn't think it'll work .....he'll give u options..... I made an appointment for partial highlights because the reviews on the actual services were good, and now looking back it was against my better judgement based on the comments regarding price. To start: I'm from NY and used to pricey salons. I have no problem with the $275 for my highlights with Isak who did a very nice job. Now the issue: I mentioned to Isak that I would like a trim, and that I regularly do so with my color every six weeks at my usual salon (I'm in the Summit area now frequently for work). He suggested Jackie, who came over and said hello while I was in his chair. She explained she uses a dry technique, etc. My hair is waist length and I literally just wanted a trim. Fast forward to my shock at the register when I am charged $135 for my trim! This is absurd! The person at the front counter then proceeds to go speak to both Isak and Jackie after I express my shock. He indicates that there is no difference between a hair cut and a trim, and gave me a 20% discount which "the house will eat". Never in my life have I felt like a salon service was a negotiable item. This felt terrible all around. $135 for a trim on straight, waist length hair should have been clearly expressed before the service by any reasonable person-- also that price is not listed on the price list. This was a terrible end to an otherwise decent experience. Also, worth noting is that Jackie's assistant did most of the blow drying, and I left with flat, super straight hair when I asked for a style with body. read more

I think that ZoKu is a great salon -- great decor and the people are really personable and friendly. Adam at the front desk is always pleasant. Yeah, it's a little expensive, but I always know that I'm going to leave looking great so I think it's worth the little extra. Pat cuts my hair and does a great job. I go in with an idea of what I want to do and she goes to work sending me out with exactly what I had in mind, but couldn't really articulate. Where do I start? Firstly, on my way to the salon I received a phone call from their receptionist letting me know that the woman doing my hair was going to be late. It's funny how salons can charge you a fee if you cancel within a specific time, but when they waste your time there's nothing to be said about it. This was really only a a small annoyance, rather than anything. This was my first time at the salon, and I was there to get a single process done, just to dye my grays. Keep in mind, the prices at this salon are higher than average salons which is why I picked them. Higher prices usually come with higher standards of quality service & customer service. In the beginning I didn't mind my experience at all. The assistant was nice, and the late color specialist was ok, or at least I thought. Once the assistant was done washing out my hair, she put me in the basement to dry my own hair. I was so confused by this.. but apparently there's only 2 options. You a) do it yourself or b) pay additional $$ ($40) for blow drying your hair. Ok, is this Supercuts?! I can expect additional pricing for blow drying at a cheap place but for prices to be well above the normal, it should come with the full package. You can bring tea/coffee to your clients but you can't blow dry hair? You're a hair salon!! I expected an "upscale" (as they'd like to present themselves) hair salon to be more catering/accommodating to their customers, but clearly this was not the case. I'm originally from Manhattan (which higher prices are expected) but the prices at this salon (which is in jersey) is ridiculous for the kind of treatment you get in return. The additional $$ turned me off big time. I opted to have someone blow dry my hair, and how I wish I did it myself. The guy made me look like a beauty queen contestant at the end of it... and then walked me out insulting the hair products I used at home bc he was trying to sell me theirs. Talk about great customer service. He was rude and unprofessional. The receptionist noticed the disgust look on my face that she went about trying to explain what he "meant to say". I'm not stupid. To top it off, they don't take tip on your card. With prices like that, who carries that much cash for tip?! What year are we in? All things I'd expect fr a cheaper salon. This salon cares nothing about the client, isn't accommodating at all, the staff are rude and stuck up, and they literally scream out begging for every dollar that you have. I'm honestly stunned I wasn't charged for the tea I was given at the beginning of my visit. Not to mention, the next day I noticed that my grays were not even dyed!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have so many grays and out 165 dollars. Don't book from here, you'd prob get a better experience at Supercuts. read more

Some of the worst salon experiences I have ever had. The management and staff and the overall way this place is run is deplorable. I absolutely love my stylist but I really dislike coming here. I followed my stylist here from somewhere else, but this spot is really awful. They overbook their stylists every time, there aren't enough sinks (so you're brought to the dingy basement for washings), the front desk staff is rude, they make you wait up to 30 min sometimes and charge an arm and a leg for their services at that. I would highly suggest going somewhere else for a better experience. read more

I was looking for a new salon in the area and heard some good things about Zoku. When I called to book my appointment the receptionist was very friendly and able to fit me in the next day. From the moment I walked in I was greeted by the staff and made to feel relaxed and pampered. Pat was my stylist and she listened to what I wanted and offered advice on what to do. I loved the cut and the style. I also wanted to thank Maria the lovely girl that brought me coffee and gave me the best shampoo and scalp massage of my life! Been coming here for years!! Zoku has always been a go-to for me. Several years ago when I had been experimenting at home with dyes and bleach, I have had to come in 2-3 times to get it fixed (I've learned my lesson since). They know what they're doing and they only want the best for your hair. Although some of the bookings can be pricey, it's worth the money, especially since there are many other lower-quality salons around that charge either the same prices or even more for the same processes. Recently I've had an issue with keeping the tone of my balayage in place and my hair has been getting orange but I don't believe it's the stylists fault, just maybe the water in my house, sun exposure, etc. I'll continue to keep coming here, thank you for saving my hair! read more

Gil cut my hair and while he did a good job, it was done in total silence with attitude. The entire place has attitude though, and not in a good way. The receptionist acted as if I was bothering her when I checked in for my appointment. People that worked there kept throwing unfriendly glances. Even the people sweeping hair off the ground acted like they were just way more important than you. I don't know if this place is trying to uphold an image of a posh NYC salon, but maybe one of them should visit NYC sometime. I've lived in the city for 8 years and have had my hair done at many upscale salons on the UWS over the years. People there are friendly, courteous and don't act like they are above the clients. It gets three stars because the cut was good, but I would never go back to a place that acts so self-important. Get a grip. read more

Overall salon is a 4 star experience--2 stars for colorist/owner Zoe. Just not worth NYC prices (high end at that) for mediocre color and service, plus all the delays and drama of the elite colorists. Out of this world, first class 5 star service from the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out, with the most amazing color and cut I have had in YEARS! I walked into Zoku with dark 2 toned hair that had stair step layers and I walked out with the most beautiful rich brown with such dimension and depth (had some hi lites put in also) and a cut that had people complimenting me on the train this morning. Zoie did my color and she is a true artist and dedicated to her salon and most of all her customers. A.J her assistant is by far the giver of the most earth shattering wash I have EVER had!!! Irene cut my hair and gave me the waves I love and all i can say is WOW. I live in the city with a salon on every block but none that have the caliber of talent that Zoku has. Run, don't walk to this place. I've been going since they opened. Ask for Donnie for haircut ($100) and Alyson ($85) or Isak for color if you can't afford Christine or Zoe. Donnie is THE BEST at long, layered styles. Plus he's nice and hilarious. I asked him to make me feel like a supermodel and he does. I walk out of there every time feeling like a million bucks and I don't have to go back for months for a trim, the cut grows out really evenly. Donnie knows what works for your face shape. He'd never give you bangs if he didn't think they would be flattering. They've never tried to force expensive products down my throat, although they do sell them, lots of Loreal Kerastase. The free wine in addition to non-alcholic beverages a nice bonus. I've had my hair done at Bumble and Bumble, Paul Labrecque and other "celebrity" salons but this is by far a better value. read more
