We chatted, and I was quoted about $275 for hemming and adding a simple bustle to my wedding dress. I mentioned that I was still deciding whether to exchange my dress for the next size up and had another alterations appointment scheduled before making my final decision. The owner's demeanor changed immediately. Instead of understanding that I was simply comparing options, he became defensive, told me I was "in the wrong place," refused to alter my dress, and told me to leave. I understand every business has the right to choose its customers, but there is a professional way to treat people. Shopping around before making a decision is completely reasonable, especially for wedding alterations. I ultimately had my dress altered elsewhere, where I was treated with kindness and respect. Looking back, the experience reminded me of the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld, except instead of "No soup for you," it was "No dress for you."

It was only $15 for the hem, which is competitive (the cheapest I've paid was $7, but nowhere near Greenville, DE). Yesterday I dropped off a vintage Turkish kilim rug to be cleaned. They quoted just over a week's turnaround time, which I still didn't think was bad. We'll see how that goes and how much that runs me..
