Angelique's Family Restaurant - Bacon and eggs, with hash browns, beans, and toast

Updated review. My most recent visit to Angelique Family restaurant was to celebrate my…read moremother-in-law's birthday. We ordered eggs benedict with by far the best Hollandaise sauce you can get. The poached eggs were medium with lots of yolk to spread on the peameal bacon and english muffin. The shredded potato hashbrown is addictive and massive portions. The baked beans were nice and warm to compliment your breakfast. I ordered the 3 eggs over easy with 3 sausages and 3 bacon. They actually serve 4 eggs which I assume they are using medium sized eggs. That's OK as the extra makes up for the smaller eggs. You get a choice of toast ( white, whole wheat or rye) along with shredded potato hashbrowns or home fries. My mother-in-law ordered the Western Omelet with ham and onion. She really enjoyed the dish and she managed to eat almost half of the dish. The coffee is bottomless and the service is very friendly. I suggest dressing up for the cold weather because you might have to lineup outside the restaurant. I don't think they take reservations and it's first come first serve.

But..... my gosh. The dishes looked nice. My niece said her food was okay. Her cousin said his food was overcooked. My dish was trash, my gosh, I couldn't stomach the taste. The salmon was tough, tasted bad, rank. The seasoning was weird and didn't pair well. It had some kinda spice that tasted odd. I don't even know what to say about it. But later that night I was throwing up well into the morning. I only eat possibly 3-4 small bites, most of the dish was left back. I still tipped and didn't complain as I just wanted the kids to have a nice night without arguing with whoever. As I write this I am reminded of the disgusting taste. NEVER again for that dish! Now that I think about it I honestly shouldn't have tipped. Paying for that dish was already above and beyond!

Smashing good brunch?…read more Smash Kitchen has been on our list to visit for a while till we finally had the opportunity. For more than a dozen years, this Markham spot has been known for good flavors and portions. The weekend brunch menu from 10am - 2:45pm had an assortment of creative dishes. We opted for their LA mac & cheese ($25) with a saucy cheese blend textured by herb crumbles. The soft shell crab benedict ($24) looked irresistible with two nicely poached eggs beside crab drizzled with maple buffalo hot sauce. While it came with no sides, bites of the whole fried soft shell crab on brioche toast were scrumptious. The inside of this restaurant is cavernous, featuring even a private room and patio. It's much larger than the dated plaza entrance would indicate. Staff were generally active at the tables, even delivering colour sheets to young ones. Skip it or hit it? It was a long time coming but brunch here didn't disappoint. Hit it!

After being told we'd have to wait for more than an hour at a restaurant across the parking lot, we…read moredropped into this Applebee's. Yes, this was a 'Plan B' choice and with our experience, that seem apt. We visited on a Saturday evening and the place was not empty but neither was it full. It was, however, a surprising contrast to the place we'd just left. We were greeted promptly and seated quickly. Our server came by introduced herself and asked about drinks. My perception is that she was slightly exasperated as all of our party of 5 asked only for water. Nonetheless she was generous enough to bring us glasses and a pitcher - thank you. Oddly, despite a fairly long menu we all struggled to choose an entree we really wanted. We settled on Chicken Fingers, Fish & Chips, Cowboy Burger, Cheeseburger, & Chicken Wings. Our orders all arrived at the table together and the time required seems about normal. Everything tasted okay but that's it, just okay. Overall there's just an overarching mediocrity about the whole experience. Applebee's was an okay choice given our circumstance but it certainly wouldn't be a place we'd normally seek out.

The shrimps were overcooked and tough, but the chicken was soft and well cooked. The sautéed onions elevated the entire dish with its delicious aroma! My husband got a basic steak and daughter got a cheeseburger. Our server (I believe, Monica), was very friendly. Got me a new water as the first cup I received was slightly sweet tasting. She also got us a box and paid the bill in advance, as I told her my daughter was getting sleepy when she came to checkup on us.

The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, and when we moved to our table our server was also great. Cocktails were fabulous and the ambiance of the place is very nice. My wife ordered this vegetarian squash dish and she loved it. I ordered the steak and the cook was perfect but I found the sauce overpowering. It's personal preference, I like my steak with just salt and pepper without sauce. My fault for not reading the menu correctly. The sides of purée and veggies were great. Overall KB hits it out of the ballpark and is so much better than the chain upscale eateries.

Every dish I had was very good. For this meal I ordered something different, the shrimp stuffed catfish. Never had catfish so this dish was calling me. Service was very good. Our waitress was chatty and was joking around with us which was fun. Ambiance is more on the rustic side almost had a saloon feel, partly because of the old building but it was quaint. There was plenty of free parking in the rear which was convenient. We were greeted and seated quickly and our server Cass was excellent and very attentive in explaining the special and taking our drink order. She came by several times to check up and I appreciate the care. Those soup dumplings arrived and they're still just as much as a knock out as they usually are. Full of flavour, with a kick of spice, I really enjoyed them. The half priced wings were also worth it with a side of fries. I chose the classic buffalo which were spicy in all the right ways. The wings are smaller compared to other Wing places but they compensate by giving more. The fries were truly delicious, crispy and well seasoned. I really enjoyed the fries and typically get them with every meal. My only issue is that the bathrooms require some upkeep and maintenance as there are several pieces that require repair. I don't think the toilet paper holder should be held together by painter's tape. Overall I've been here many times and will come back many times.

I was so thirsty that by the time I chugged 1/3 of my beer, I realized that she had brought a wrong beer. I decided to let it go and just drank the rest. The food did not fare much better as my daughter's pizza flatbread did not taste like it did last time. Maybe a different chef was cooking tonight? My royal Bangkok bowl was tiny in size and all the noodles were broken into small pieces which made it unappetizing. The sauce on it was too sweet and eggy for my taste and I won't be ordering it again. My husband's burger was the best pick of the night. All this for $96 made for a pretty ho hum experience. Next time, I will take a sip of my beer first so I don't get stuck drinking something I did not order.
