As soon as I looked at it, that should have been my clue to leave. The tea was a powered mix or something. It wasn't fresh brewed sweet tea and tasted awful. Next I ordered fish and some sides. Nothing was to my liking, and I know good southern food. I ate the macaroni and cheese because that was the best item on the plate. I attempted to eat the fish but couldn't finish it. I took the rest home and eventually threw it away. Very disappointing and a waste of time and money. Not to mention the 20% gratuity added to my bill. My 3-Star rating is generous.

He said that he usually works in the back and I believe him. We had the wings (whole wings), a fried shrimp and fried whiting platter with yams and green beans. The wings tasted like somebody's mama was in the back frying chicken. We also had the fried seafood platter which included a broiled crabcake, a few pieces of fried whiting and some jumbo shrimp Mac and cheese (not my favorite) and potato salad (sweet but different texture). The whiting was good but tough in texture. All food seems to be made to order. Be prepared to wait a little bit but not unreasonably long. It's amazing hat Richmond is so close to DC but yet so south that you immediately feel as if you're in the country. The restaurant is old looking and no frills whatsoever. You can tell that the family is keeping the dream alive. The AC was not pumping the best. It's also obvious that this is a staple in Richmond. The place was packed and when a place is packed with seasoned black folks....thats a great sign! I did have an issue. A 20% gratuity is added to all dine in orders. Our waiter brought out the initial receipt and I saw that fee so when he brought the receipt to sign, I did not offer an additional tip. Like I said, he was cool but not a great waiter at all. We literally ate or entire meal with one napkin each. I felt a type of way that he didn't mention that gratuity was already included. I felt like he was trying to get an additional 18-25%. That really rubbed me the wrong way. Even with this I still give this place four stars and recommend it.

I know the menu like the back of my hand--and there are certain things I always look forward to. Let me tell you... the baked chicken? So soft, juicy, and tender. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, just how I like it. When the roast beef is sliced nice and thin? Baby, it melts in your mouth. That crab-stuffed fish? Moist, tender, and packed with flavor. I love it! My mama and my sister always go for the beef liver--they say it hits every time. The spoon bread is so good and soft, and don't get me started on the dinner rolls--I could eat a tray of those by themselves. I also love the carrot soufflé (just sweet and smooth), and the broccoli casserole is something I'll always grab if I see it. I'll take mashed potatoes or rice with just about any meat, and the cabbage is good too--but I like to add a little butter to mine. Now this is September 2025, and right now they've got a special going on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday--two meals for $29, all day long. That comes with a drink, a roll, one entrée, and two sides. You can't beat that. Let me shout out Ms. Vera--she is my absolute favorite. Such a sweet and lovely lady. But honestly, I haven't had a bad server there yet. The vibe is always good. The food's good, the customers are friendly, and while some of the staff can be hit or miss depending on the day, most of them are just wonderful. This place just feels like home. Cheddar's was nearby, and we hoped that the traffic situation would be resolved by the time we finished our lunches. (It was). We were seated quickly, and were given our menus and two yummy honey butter croissants (gratis, 440 calories). I opted for the Chicken Caesar Pasta Salad ($12.49), which features lemon pepper chicken, penne pasta, romaine lettuce and croutons (860 calories). My rating for this dish is 3/5. It was fine, but a little heavy on the dressing, and light on the chicken. It was as advertised, but a bit boring with so few ingredients. My husband opted for the Chicken Alfredo which was served with garlic bread ($14.79). This dish also included penne pasta, broccoli, and homemade Alfredo sauce (1,540 calories). My husband also rated his meal as 3/5. He said it was good enough but feels that Olive Garden has similar meals that are a better value because they include unlimited salad and breadsticks. We were seated in a booth in a separate room on the left, that felt quite isolated. In fact, if another couple wasn't seated near us, we not have seen our waitress or the activity of the restaurant again. Finally, a personal pet peeve for this and some other restaurants .... There has been increased pressure to tip more generously. The suggested gratuity "provided for your convenience" on the receipt first listed 22%, then 20%, and finally 18%. The old standard of 15% seems to have disappeared. Parking was free and plentiful, and provided easy access to/from Plank Road.

The stuff that my waist line thanks me for not cooking, if you know what I mean... I opted for the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese, brother chose the pork chop special with mashed potatoes and pickled cukes and onions. The mains were amazing. The pork chop was huge and thick and delicious, the country fried steak was so good, the gravy on both was delicious. The price was a steal. They were both amazing. The mashed potatoes were also both delicious, definitely homemade and not from a box. The baked Mac and cheese was just okay. It tasted like normal homemade Mac and cheese, nothing particularly special, but then I feel like baking it always just dries it out and sort of breaks the cheese sauce, so I would definitely skip that next time in favor of something else. The cukes were also just okay, we got it to feel like we were trying a healthier option, but will probably just splurge for something else next time. We were a little disappointed though, I do understand that this is a local restaurant and some things are harder to get and keep on the menu and keep in stock, especially if you don't want waste, but we initially tried to order corn cakes but they were out, then rolls but they were out, then went with biscuits. Then brother got the last pork chop plate. They have been out of pickle fries for "awhile now". If you aren't particularly picky about what you want to order, cool. I only particularly like cornbread/corncakes, so I was pretty bummed. The people are super friendly though, and a lot of locals seem to come by for their hotdogs (like, a LOT. Clearly we are missing something not ordering the dogs.) I'll definitely be back on days that I had a really healthy breakfast and plan on breaking my healthy streak with something fried and covered in gravy.

I went with 4 stars this time but could be inspired to bump it up next visit. This eatery is open very reduced hours, Thursday thru Sunday from 1130am to 5pm. We got there at noon and followed a large group in the door. None of us were sure where to go exactly, but had I not been stuck behind them it would have been easy to figure out. Basically there is a large, beautifully appointed dining space with lots of seating configurations. This is not an all you can eat buffet. This is a cafeteria. Everything is a la carte. You approach the glass food cases, grab a tray and silverware and wait for one of the staff to offer you your choice of salads - I saw a pasta salad, fresh fruit, and the fixin's for a tossed green salad. We opted for the fruit salad and the tossed green salad. Then we approached the entree case where I spied liver and onions, meatloaf, baked chicken and some other offerings. The special of the day was a mango sauce pork chop. My friend opted for the pork chop and I got the liver and onions. The liver portion was huge - two large pieces of liver which was very tender and tasty. My granddaughter got the mac and cheese which appeared to be very cheesy and of the homemade variety. She ate all of her fresh fruit and some of the mac and cheese, which is more than she has eaten most places we go. I did not get any food photos as I forgot until we were well into our meals. There were some bread options including corn bread muffins. I got one that came with a small dollop of butter and it was sweet but not anything special. There was only one dessert option that I saw that looked like sweet potato pie and we passed on it. Drink options include sweet tea and mango lemonade. I would love if they offered the mango iced tea they have down the street. I did not see unsweet tea which is my drink of choice. Now to the reason I went with 4 stars. I had no idea what I was getting, what came with it, and how much it was. I paid for the pork chop, liver, salad, fruit, corn muffin, mac and cheese and 2 drinks and it came to about $35. That seems very reasonable and certainly not shocking. But I could not tell what the offerings were as they were not labelled, I did not know what came with sides and what didn't, and after the fact I noticed a very small sign about a children's meal, and found out it is spaghetti, bread and a drink for $4.99. I would really like to have the various options clearly identified and know the prices. I believe prices are posted on very small signs but not in a way that caught my attention or made sense to me. I am just one of those people that likes to know what my options are and know what I'm spending. Call me quirky that way. Limited hours must meet some demographic they are hoping to reach, perhaps the Sunday after church crowd fits perfectly in those hours. Still, a cafeteria concept can work and fill a niche in the revitalization of downtown Phoebus. Depending how long the serving line gets, because standing in line is not how I like to spend my meal time, I would like to give this eatery another chance soon!

Everything about it was good, the texture of the mushroom, the cheese (vegan?), the plant based sausage. I inhaled it and the carrot soufflé, which I'd never heard of though apparently everyone else has. ;) My first time trying maque choux as well - decent. This meal was amazing and I had a great time inhaling it at the waterfront a block away from the restaurant. 2nd visit, April 1st- more carrot soufflé please! Tried the cabbage - a green herb is included in the seasoning, tastes like basil or oregano or a blend. Different. I like it. Their salmon croquettes have a crust I'm not used to - maybe cornmeal? Some of the edges were overdone. Inside was meat only, maybe a few grains of rice, which isn't the best for salmon cakes, as they need something to keep them moist. These were on the dry side but edible. 3rd visit - more carrot soufflé please! 4th visit - went on a Sunday for the first time, which is when they have turkey wings. I ordered carrot soufflé and cabbage as sides. Was told that it comes with rice as a side and normally the soufflé would have to be an extra, separate side, but she went ahead and allowed me to opt out of the rice and have both my sides of choice. (I would have gladly paid an up charge for a premium side). Lots of turkey, good gravy. There is no picture evidence. Inhaled. 5th visit - cousin treated me to a delivery today. Turkey wings, rice, and cabbage pictured. I was trying to fight a carrot soufflé addiction and didn't request it. I regret it. ;) Cuz said thanks for hipping her to the spot - she walked out with 4 entrees herself ;) :O
