I love the VMFA Sculpture Garden, so really enjoyed the outdoor seating of Best Cafe and its view of the garden. ***LOCATION*** This is right inside the VMFA. If you're using the main entrance of the VMFA, you'll walk past the admissions desk and to the right towards the big windows. You'll see a sign that says Best Cafe. You can park inside their parking garage or find street parking near the museum. ***EXPERIENCE*** It's set up like a cafeteria (think Ikea cafeteria feels). They have a cafe section and a food section. Although I haven't had their food, a friend of mine who works here says the soup is good and the rest is just ok. I got a tasty lavender lemonade kombucha. My friend ordered a cream soda. We coworked together outside. ***PRICE*** My membership gave me a small discount on my kombucha which made it about $6. ***BATHROOM*** The bathroom for the cafe is the same as the one for the museum. It's divided by Women and Men. There are a lot of stalls in the Women's bathroom and a good amount of sinks and paper towel dispensers. ***CONCLUSION*** This is a wonderful spot to read a book, write, or get some work done. The wifi is strong and it has an A+ atmosphere.

Normally I would not eat at a museum cafe because the food is not good quality and overpriced. This is NOT the case at the Courtyard Cafe @VFMA. There was a coffee bar with some pastries that would make a nice snack. There was a hot food counter but the lights were off and it didn't appear that they were serving anything. We visited on a weekday around 3 so I would have expected some kind of hot lunch options. The only options available were prepackaged meals and items in a refrigerated case. The sandwiches looked good as did the salads. We opted for a dip platter that had hummus, red pepper hummus, and baba ganoush. It had a lot of raw veggies and crackers to dip. The platter also had two greek dolamades. It was really good and enough to share and it was $7. We also shared a salad that was made with farro, kale, cucumber dices, and dried cranberries. It was tossed with a light dressing and it was soooooo gooood! It was only $4. There was seating inside which was bright and modern. We chose to sit outside on a patio what was surrounded by a large pond with fish and plants. There was a gorgeous courtyard that would make an amazing place for pictures. There were some sculptures and a waterfall. I loved the lilly pads and the people making wishes on coins they tossed in. Honestly, the food could have been bad and I still would have written a positive review base just off of the pondside patio! Another perk is that you save 10% if you are a museum member!

Jazz night every Thursday! Get some culture, dammit!

I've only been to Best Cafe when enjoying the free Thursday night jazz so this review is for the combined experience broken down as follows: Five stars for the jazz! If you haven't heard, VMFA and the Richmond Jazz Society host this free concert every Thursday from 6-9pm and it has become quite popular. The artists are a mix of styles too, so one week might be instrumental jazz and R&B and the next might be bop or Latin or vocal standards or .... It's a great way to spend an hour or two hearing some of our local talent and then walking around the museum. Ahhh culture! Three stars for the food. I've eaten a variety of the food served here and it's always been good, not great but good. It's a cafe so i don't expect to be blown away. They usually have a variety of sandwiches, salads, pizza and a mix of specials. My last visit I had a half sandwich and bowl of mixed fruit for $8. Besides the standard fountain drinks, they also serve beer, wine and coffee drinks. VMFA members get a discount too (I think it's 10%).

So much food came out that our plan at a midday snack became our dinner. Half of the grilled cheese made its way back home. I especially liked the Brie, whipped ricotta, and speck on the charcuterie board. The grilled cheese was perfectly balanced with the apple butter and mustard as well. We also got roasted red peppers as a surprise. Those and the olives were again, superb! We ate in the dead of winter, and left fully warmed by our meal. I can imagine the ambiance in the summer to be delightful when they open their outdoor patio! One thing to note if it's your first time. We sat ourselves and ordered at a register for our food. It was brought to us by friendly staff. Afterwards we bussed our glassware and left our plates.

He had a huge vault of songs... everything I asked for, he had. Some of which are not as popular as others. AND the best part, he could change the pitch to accommodate my vocal range. Some of my favorite songs are a bit too high, and I had to ask for two of them to be brought down 1/2 step. Songs ranged from 50s to current. Enjoyable singers all around and everyone was fun to watch. I got a glass of their tempranillo, which was perfection. Full bodied, super dry and delicious. I also got a pizza, which is kind of a personal size. Very thin. Good, but not great. Decor is nice. Newly renovated with mostly tables all on the same level, but also a couch area next to the TV, and about three bar seats. Plenty of room to spread out. The only thing keeping Gramophone from 5 stars is the lack of food options. Hope they're able to add some simple staples like burgers and fries or salads. Convenient location right on the corner of Forest Hill and Westover Hills Blvd. I'll definitely come back for karaoke and wine!

Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.

When they learned we were celebrating our anniversary, they surprised us with warm bread and house-made herbed butter on the house, a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the evening. Every bite was cooked to perfection and left us excited for the next course. My spouse had the Bone-In Pork Rib Chop with roasted peaches, haricot verts, roasted poblano cornbread, and pickled peach mustard. This dish was absolutely phenomenal. Every component complemented the others beautifully. The sweetness of the peaches, the slight tang of the mustard, the savory pork, and the cornbread all came together in a way that felt thoughtful and perfectly balanced.
