They installed my new garage door opener a year or two ago and it went great. This weekend, however, was another story. My garage door broke and trapped my cars inside. So, obviously, it was time sensitive to get it fixed. On Saturday, I made an appointment for Monday 12-4. They waited until 3:15 to call to say they weren't going to make it. Not only would it not have been my choice to sit here all afternoon, but I needed my car out by the evening, so they put me in a bind. I do understand that things happen, but I think they should have kept tabs on the technician and at least given me a heads up earlier so I could work on finding a different plan. Originally we had GDS come out and replace our garage door openers. It was pointed out to us that our old doors were heavy and swollen with water and had worn down the mechanism and we should consider replacing the doors. We talked it over but did not pull the trigger as we just couldn't make a decision, despite Rob showing us samples in our home and us visiting the showroom. A couple years later, we restarted the process. Rob again brought books and samples to us and we visited the showroom. Eventually we pulled the trigger and the house looks amazing! They called us to schedule a maintenance appointment which was made for a week later during a 4 hour window on Day 1. My husband took the morning off of work to be home during that time frame. They never showed up and then called to say they had fallen behind and would come on Day 2 within a 4 hour window time frame in the AM. Thankfully we were home and did not take the day off because they fell behind again and said they would be 2 hours late. Then they called again to say they wouldn't make it at all and wanted us to reschedule AGAIN with no offer for any compensation after we were inconvenienced waiting around for 2 straight days. Outstanding service! My better half accidentally pulled out of the garage when the door wasn't fully open. The roof of her car took the brunt of the damage, but the bottom panel of the door was knocked out of the track, and the weatherstripping was pulled completely off the bottom of the door. This happened on a Saturday afternoon at around 3:30. By 4:45, GDS was on the scene, and put the door panel back on track. The technician ordered a new weatherstripping (better than the original!) and it was installed by Thursday the same week. I paid a bit of a premium for the Saturday service call, but I really needed an operable garage door, so it was worth it. I highly recommend GDS. Fast, professional, friendly. read more

I have used them in the past and they always did great work. Called yesterday for an appointment and was given today for a tune up between 11-3. They called late in the afternoon and had to cancel because they were stuck on another job. I wish i had gotten a call earlier and not wasted my day. My time is also valuable. We had Mike come out to fix the spring on our garage door. Not only did they fix the spring, but they also took the time to inspect other important components on the door. They replaced a fraying coil, and added some weather stripping to help cover a gap at the bottom of the door. They were here during the time they said they would be here. And they also were able to come the very next day after our spring broke. In this day and age it can be hard to find good honest help. I hired this company to fix one garage spring. I told the employee that I wanted one spring fixed. Despite this, the employee fixed two springs without my permission and charged me for two. When I called the company to complain, I was told that the invoice had not yet been processed and I would only be charged for one spring. I then checked my bank statement and saw I had been already charged for 2 springs. I needed to call the company numerous times and argue with the staff just to get what I originally asked for - one spring. When the employee returned, he continued to argue with me about why I only needed one spring. If you simply want garage door repaired without getting charged for stuff you didn't request, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Reply to company's response: Rob responded to my original complaint with numerous false accusations so I want to correct those immediately. It is clear from his response that he disagrees with my request to get only one spring changed, and that was the same attitude I experienced throughout my interactions with this company. Contrary to Rob's claim, when the employee arrived at my home, I requested clearly that only one spring be changed. I trusted that the employee would follow my request so I did not oversee the entire process. I was never rude or arrogant in my interactions with Garage Specialists staff. It was in fact the exact opposite - every staff member was rude and condescending toward me. I was simply trying to get what I requested and agreed to pay for, and all I received was constant pushback. Rob claims it is the client's prerogative to decline parts or services, but that was not my experience with this company. Please note that Rob's response is merely an attempt to misrepresent the facts and cover up their failure to follow their customer's simple request. I have been using Rob and Garage Door Specialists for years for repair and maintenance on our 3 garage doors. They have been quick to respond and very professional. This year we decided to upgrade our doors. Rob came out and spent a lot of time with my wife and me going over our options and making recommendations. When the tech saw how bad the rollers were he gave you the option to replace them. The cost was given up front & honest. The product you refer to from Depot is a DIY low budget product. We do not use these, we use better quality product. Keep in mind the rollers were sold INSTALLED not as a DIY. Many people get injured replacing their own rollers & spend more on emergency room visits than the labor we charge to install. You were not double charged. The springs were done as quoted. You chose to have extra work ....that was very much needed, so extra labor was involved. The charges are correct & is e have not changed them in many years. Most important, is he told the cost BEFORE doing the extra work & you agreed. We never do work that is not authorized by the client first. That is partly why our ratings & reviews are so positive. Honesty, integrity & professionalism always. You did not know you needed the extra work therefore neither did we. I searched the Norhshore area for new garage doors. GDS was one of the few with a showroom which was a huge plus. I met Rob and was able to discuss what I wanted and get the info I needed while actually looking at doors and hardware. I found some others that carried the same or similar products and found one that was a little bit cheaper. Most of the others I found sold the doors and would have a subcontractor do the install. I went back to GDS and Rob because I felt very comfortable that he and his company sold and installed the doors and would still be there down the road if I needed service. Also, the service that I did recieve from GDS was completely professional and turned out to be actually better than promised. My house is wood sided and Rob was also able to arrange for a siding guy to do a small job involving cladding the wood frame around the doors with aluminum so I wouldn't have to scrape and paint and now the whole garage door and frame are maintenance free. read more

This issue came up again because my daughter's door needed work. She found a good company. But I was reminded of the service I got from Garage Door specialists. I was looking at my door springs and I found these guys installed two different springs on my door! One spring is clearly a smaller in length and diameter. This means one will break before the other. Also my door is out of balance and I had to add weight to balance it. I found online that this is not the way it is supposed to be done. Beware if you use these guys. read more

I had to pay someone else to fix the work of GDS, because they left behind a partially destroyed garage and wouldn't fix damage due to their poor installation. The door was installed too close to clear the drywall above it and started catching it several days later. This caused significant damage to the drywall and the door would no longer open at all. They would not come out on Saturday or Sunday - we had to park outside. They eventually made it out on a Tuesday. The installer and his manager came to assess the damage. Their solution - easy! Door catching on the drywall? Just cut off the drywall! They refused to re-adjust the door multiple times and I finally gave in to cut the drywall so that my family could use the garage door they installed. We now had an ugly strip of unfinished wall above the door that was not there before and another huge (about a square foot) hole where the drywall was ripped off by the garage door and had to be cut off. When I asked what's next, how do we fix the drywall the manager said "oh, we don't do drywall or paint". I asked him if he wanted a number of someone affordable who does - this is when I was told that: 1. They were at my house out of their good will (never mind the so called warranty) 2. They are not responsible (the before and after pictures clearly show what happened - the door caught the drywall) 3. Previous owners of the house had the same issue (Was not an issue for at least 3 years I've lived with the old garage door. You installed the garage door with the rails, this was the time to make sure the door clears the drywall by more than a hair's width) 4. "I'm sorry you feel that we are responsible for fixing the drywall, we'll just agree to disagree" (If I came to your house and punched a hole in the wall, then told you "I'm sorry, I don't do drywall" how would you feel?). I would be wary of GDS warranty as their comments and actions seemed to show they don't stand by their work. read more

After Overhead Door decided that my garage door was a safety hazard, was damaged when it fell due to a broken spring (it never 'fell', it just wouldn't open, and there was no damage, it's just old and due to be replaced), and refused to come (even though they never set foot inside the garage to look at it), I called GDS. They were friendly, came out quickly, and fixed my garage door opener. Was it a little more expensive? Sure. But at least the guy from GDS waited until he actually saw my garage door (on the inside, where the springs were) before diagnosing the issue. GDS fixed it without a problem and now my door works again. Yes, my door needs replacing. Yes, I'll have it done. GDS was great. The service guy invited me into their showroom too to look at doors and told me that even if I didn't buy from them, at least I can see a few different doors. As a side note, the tech was very friendly and this company calls to let you know the tech is on the way (not offered to me by other companies - fyi). He helped me choose the best doors for our house based on the exterior appearance and offered the more moderate priced doors rather than the highest priced ones. The doors were installed by his son, a super nice guy, who did a great job. However, a few months later, one of the doors was making a clunking noise and I emailed them. I received a call from the office and they were able to send someone out right away (20 minutes) who adjusted the spring (5 minutes) and gave a friendly wave good bye.
