I hired Garage Authority to replace a worn garage door support bracket. I chose the company primarily because it advertises itself as veteran-owned. Daniel Montes, presumably the owner and sole technician, came to quote the job. I requested that he also replace the tension springs, since they would need to be removed during the bracket replacement. He asked for a $300 upfront payment to cover materials, which I agreed to.
Two days later, Daniel returned for the installation but did not bring the support brackets, stating he was unable to locate suitable replacements. He did purchase tension springs, though they were from a different manufacturer than the originals. He then attempted to persuade me that the brackets did not need replacement. I allowed him to proceed with the spring replacement alone, given that he had already made the trip.
During installation, it became apparent that Daniel lacked the necessary expertise to adjust spring tension properly. The new springs had incorrect specifications, resulting in excessive tension that prevented the garage door from closing. I asked him to reinstall the original springs.
In the end, the support brackets were not replaced, and the new springs were unusable. The garage door remained in its original condition. I offered a resolution: Daniel could return the new springs (estimated value ~$100), retain $100 for his time, and refund the remaining $100 from the $300 prepayment. He initially agreed but later declined, stating he felt entitled to retain the full amount.
Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Garage Authority or Daniel Montes. read more
