I love card games and this place is decently amazing. But I don't feel like a valued customer by the staff. I've been there a few times for local tournaments, and I'm not sure if I was cutting or not but I tried paying for my entry but ppl kept getting in front of me as I talked to the cashier holding my money to pay. another time I have called to ask if they had a card, the response felt improfessional. Another thing, and it's probably not the shops control but their loyal and regular top players don't feel very humble and if anything i kind of felt degraded. But hey it's like football, when we fumble the ball or give a interception we gotta laugh at the player who made the mistake. Hopefully they will improve. Another bad experience but it has its ups and downs depending on who you are. But they scheduled for a time for the tournament to start but then they push it forward for more players, quantity vs quality? After that I got the bye but then all of a sudden I got matched in 5 mins as they started thankfully they gave us a time extension for the round. But still. it's a throw off. It's up to you if you want or need to practice for serious tournaments in the future. And hopefully they will improve, overall there needs to be more social gatherings like this and I hope it grows in a positive aspect. One more thing There is one very good employee there and his name is David and he amazingly shows and cares for you. read more

Place looks like hell. Paint is shot, Their are holes in the walls, the seats are dirty and smelly. This place is a hole in the wall with nothing much to offer. It smells and it hasn't been cleaned up prob since it opened. The service is horrible and the atmosphere is just crap. Monstore is right up the street from them, it's a lot cleaner and more spacious and the workers are really nice and they have a really chill card scene. Go to monstore, it's way better. Stay away from this pigpen. read more

I would rate this store a 0.1 out of 10, but unfortunately you can't on Yelp. This happened a while ago, but they have the same guy working there. I was really into Yugioh and had a stack of commons mixed with secret rares and ghost rares. Pretty sick. I was rushed and didn't separate them. Only about 60 cards, or so. I went down to gameology and gave it to their yugioh vendor. He was looking through it and didn't hit the good cards in time. Not even half way through the stack he looks up from his JOB and starts talking to a friend of mine about the latest decks. He's ignoring all of my ghost rares and is skipping through stacks of my cards! Before he looks at the last 3 cards he looks down and picks out one of my ghost rares. He says all he can give me for it is about 4 bux... NOPE! Anyway, the floors are dirty, the games seem to have been thrown on the shelves, and their MTG section is extremely limited compared to yugioh. read more

One of the worst game shops to play the card game Magic: The Gathering in Southern California. There are much better options where you will be respected as a player and customer to give this shop the time of day. Customer Service - 1 out of 5 One positive... someone answers the phone, not always with the right information, but they do answer. The negatives... Events rarely if ever run on time. The judge for MTG is always running late, and rarely has good information. The store owner is very unfriendly, and will ban or kick people out of the store for expressing concerns over events. They do not cap events when required (putting 60+ people in a store that is rated for far less), yet keep taking money. On the judge side, hires terrible judges at times, and the store judge is terrible... poor attitude, argumentative, and overall not someone you want to be around. Facility - 3 out of 5 They have some nice chairs (have improved), but they also have some terrible chairs that break if you look at the wrong. MTG has a player base that can be larger overall, and good chairs are a must. The restrooms are serviceable, but not very nice for the female customers. Stock - 1 out of 5 Magic shops need to have card inventory... this place is the worst. They rarely have cards you need, and the prices are on the high side. This is not the shop to go in with a list for the hot new standard deck and expect to have the cards. Even stuff that every store should auto have is missing from inventory. Their board game inventory is also terrible... Events - Can I give a negative out of 5? Store has on many occasions [alleged] done things that violate terms of the rules for certain game systems, including being reported for [alleged] tournament violations. Expect things to not be clear, or as expected based on other better events. This is not a shop you want to spend your 10, 20, or more dollars to play an event at. While things might go okay, they have a [alleged] track record of bad tournament, and other bad things. Overall - 1 out of 5 There are better options out there for MTG. Check out A and N card shop in San Dimas, GMI in Riverside, Monstore in Montclair (right down the street) or many other stores in the area. These shops just do things better than Gameology, and it is not worth patronizing this business with so many other better options. The store might be the right choice for the casual player who is just playing commander (I hear they do have some casual commander players), but for anything competitive stay away. read more

Come with me, fellow Yelper, as we journey to the Wayback machine to the year 2009. It was a fine year for many reasons but one of them was that Gameology moved from its former Claremont location over to it's current location in Montclair, just south of the 10 freeway. Those were good times, then, when the board games were plentifully stocked, the comic books had an entire section filled to the brim, and you had more RPGs than you could shake a stick at. The staff was knowledgeable, the service was attentive, and there was a magic in the air that made you think that maybe, just maybe, Gameology was the best gaming store in the area, if not even in Southern California. And to many of us it was. Things change, though, and between 2011 and 2012 Gameology passed to a new team, one that does not seem to hold the same esteem for quality and service. The store is noticeably less clean since the transition - some would say that some of it is maybe even in disrepair - and their stock has been meaningfully reduced in all departments. They still carry on the "Rent a game!" tradition which is awesome but their overall attentiveness to quality and service has faded since the days of Dave, the previous owner. Gameology in my opinion used to be the best there was, period. I can't tell you how much I looked forward to various events held there and sometimes I'd just drop by on a Saturday night to join in on whatever happened to be going on. Hell, some of my friends and I even helped donate terrain, games, and other nick-nacks to the store to help get things going at the new place! But now? I can't say I'd ever want to go back. Indeed, though my usual game store is currently elsewhere I did once return a few months ago to try and drum up support for a new favorite of mine (L5R) as there happened to be a World Tournament event in the area and I wanted to make sure the local community was aware. More events for a gaming community means a more active community, which is good for any business, right? Yet when I mentioned where else I was gaming - let alone the fact that I was gaming elsewhere at all - the ownership yelled at me and threatened to ban me from the store for life. And to think I was being rebuked by the same store from whom I had made *all* my gaming-related purchases between 2009 - 2012! I wish Gameology no ill will - I truly do hope they return to their former glory someday! Until then, though, I'm left simply to wonder what happened to this place and remember what could have been. read more

Walked in there today and this husky guy asked me if he could help me, I asked I'm sure I needed some card savers guy pulls out top loader. I said no I'm looking for card savers the guy comes back to me saying he's never heard of anything called by that name. He made me think what kind of card shop doesn't know what a card saver is. I had to show him a picture of what it was. Just as attitude was very rude I can see why his store is empty. Never going there again thats for sure. read more

So.... I was in the area and saw Gameology from the street and decided I pull in and take a look, really should have just kept going, from the outside the signs make it look like they have a lot of different items, but really there is not much in the shop, there were a lot of people sitting around playing games or building armies but the store is pretty barren and looks run down, The gaming area was pretty small, there was not much organization to the store as many items were just piled on top of each other at the bottom of the shelves near the floor. They advertised comics but I didn't see a one in the shop, and no one greeted me when I entered the shop or even acknowledged my presence. There are too many other shops within driving distance that have better selection and customer service. Don't think I will be back read more

Called to make sure they had a certain Catan expansion and they assured me they had it. When I finally got there I walked around aimlessly because I could not find an employee. After about 4 minutes of looking for the expansion I gave up and just called the shop to see who would get up and answer the phone. Sure enough, some kid who's been playing MTG right by us gets up answers the phone, so I just hang up. Of course, they didn't have the expansion after all. Just awful customer service but I'm sure if you're looking to find people to play some board games or cards its a great spot. read more

I love this store. I have visited a few times, most recently to buy a new copy of the new 6th edition WH40K rulebook. They were running a 'new release' discount that was pretty kind, so I took advantage, placing a credit card order over the phone. When I went in last Saturday, there were a few folks discussing the finer points of the rule changes, so I joined in. After an hour of reading, I got another rules lawyer to play a small game with me, and had a blast. Great sportsmanship, _zero_ bickering over rules, and an audience of kids to stroke our ego about our miniatures and understanding of the game. It is _really_ board and card-game-heavy (lighter on 40K and RPGs), but the folks behind the counter really know their stuff. The in-store game library is just amazing. Though I have not yet taken advantage (I've been playing 40K every time I visit) it seems that all their customers do, and the play space is really big and pretty comfortable. They have a fridge out of which they'll sell you reasonably-priced drinks ($1 bottle of water). I ran a tab while I was there, and apparently that's the norm. I guess I'd ding them one star for size of selection, but then put the star right back for running an amazingly nerd-friendly store. Great stuff, definitely check them out on an early Saturday afternoon and learn to play a new game. read more

The owner of this establishment immediately contacted me after my initial negative review in order to seek ways to improve the store. I have a lot of respect for the owner for doing this and that warranted an updated review. I went by the shop today to see if any improvements were made and I was surprised to find that all the original issues I had with the shop were either being worked on or resolved. Issue 1: THE SMELL IS GONE! HALLELUJAH! Let's hope that lasts. Issue 2: Customer service and human decency does exist! I was greeted within a few minutes of walking in and browsing the game selection. I was free to browse the games in the front without feeling like I was intruding on any intense games going on at the same time. The separation of casual browsing and hardcore game sessions makes it that much easier to browse with ease. Issue 3: Game Selection. This is the one area that while improved still lacks in many ways. While the selection has grown the range of games is still not up to par. The clarity and organization of each game seems random. Gateway games for new gamers should be clearly labeled as such. Overall, the store has drastically improved from what it was before and I'm glad to see that the owner is taking initiative to continue to make his store better. As other reviews have stated: Gameology was once a nice gamestore. The new staff are pretty much the negative pool of what game store employees can become. I used to play boardgames there back before the 2009 changeover, and recently started to game again. Though not the worst staff ever, some of their unproffesional comments and attitudes tarnish their business. -Example being when I walk in on a sunday afternoon and the manager asks "You guys looking for anything?" and I respond "Just looking around". His response, "Ah, so you guys have nothing better to do today then huh"..........?! What store manager says such comments to what he thinks is a new customer? -And yes, the store does smell pretty darn foul when you walk in. -I've been a gamer for a long time and understand that game store employees can be a little quirky, but in this day and age if you act weird with a power trip, you're unlikely to get repeat customers. Especially when they have competition for business literally up the street from them. -They also seem to be marking up some of their product according to rarity. They have some used Dungeons and Dragons material marked as high as $100! And when I asked why the price was so high, the manager's response was "Have you seen the ebay prices?". If I wanted to buy products at ebay prices, I would log on to ebay, not go to a retail store. Add the fact that the manager admitted he picked up the material from a customer who traded to product to the store (And I seriously doubt the customer received anywhere near the 'ebay' price) -A shame how they have gone downhill. read more

This is easily the best store in the area due to not only play space but service as well. Unlike many other game/comic shops, the staff at Gameology (esp. Dave the owner) are friendly and professional. They love suggesting titles to you and will work with you to find a game you/your friends/your gift recipient will enjoy. They will also keep you abreast of the latest games. The store carries comics and has tons of play space, probably the most of any store I have been in in the LA/San Bernardino region. A store to be avoided, in spite of the gamer's pledge to support your local game store. There is seemingly no communication between the owners and the employees. Nor is there is an ordering policy which would stop what happened to me from happening again to you, or any other customer you know. The game store must survive on the benefits of the ccg market over any other, and can afford to take 6 weeks to order a board game for a customer. The experience I had almost screams the question of incompetence or dishonesty. You decide. 02/17-18/2012 I order the game from one of the owners of the store, paying in advance. I'm told that it should arrive by Thursday, the 22nd of February. 02/21/12 I receive a phone call from the store, informing me that my game has arrived. 02/25/12 I go into the store and they do not have it, nor was it ordered. But don't worry it should come in on the next shipment, they will of course call me when they get it. 02/25/12 I am in a car accident in Pasadena, this is relevant. 03/01/12 On a whim I called the store after 5pm to inquire about the game being shipped. There is an apology, they ordered the wrong game initially, so they will re-order it for me. I am told I will receive a 10% discount on my next purchase for my troubles. I tell (Stewart, I believe.) that I was in a car accident and may not be able to come in on short notice, but I will try. He assures me they will hold the game until I can come in. 03/10/12 The weekend of my birthday party I went into the store, as part of a family shopping trip for the party. I am told that it hasn't been ordered. Apparently the details left when I called were not clear enough. But he can order it, no problems. I purchase a game, 7 Wonders. I get the receipt and notice no discount, I ask about the discount promised. I'm told he has no note to this extent, but he believes me as I come in often often that he knows me. So he agrees to it. I should be able to pick up the game in a week. 03/17/12 When I called to ask after my order I'm told they don't have the game but it should come in on the next order to Alliance. 03/24/12 I called the story today, and learned that they did not have a copy of the game I ordered. I went into the store to ask for a refund. The owner of the store (the same one I ordered the game from initially) tells me that it's my fault I haven't been able to pick up the game because I did not come into the store to pick it up; they received a copy and have sold it already. I'm given no date of arrival to check against my records - but I believe this to be a lie based on my pattern of regular contact on the weekend with the store. He refuses my refund. But will order the game. 03/29/12 I am driven to the store to pick up my copy of the game. The owner whom I ordered it from is present in the store, perhaps five feet away from the front counter - playing a game of magic on one of the game tables - but waves an employee to assist me over him. The game has has arrived, at long last! When I ask the employee (not an owner) what my original order date was and then ask why the delay, he confirms that it's been quite awhile since they got it and it must be a really popular game and Alliance was out of stock. I stopped by again yesterday, and today. The staff and owner are super helpful and friendly as always. I went in browsing for small card games, something that I didn't already have and that would be a good stocking stuffer for my family. I need to start Christmas shopping early. I was surprised that there were many more game titles on their shelves, but mostly a single copy of each game. Now their board game selection is not huge, only about 5 or 6 shelves, but their inventory was nearly double from my previous visits. And many of the games in stock are ones that are greatly appealing to me, just out of my price range right now. There was nothing in stock in my price range that caught my eye, so I left. The next day I came in to order the card game "Friday" by Rio Grande Games. The staff was super helpful, and I went home happy, hoping the delivery will come soon. read more

Five stars, based upon my experiences with the shop since June 2014. I would first suggest disregarding the older negative reviews. Disregard any mention of comic books as they are gone. The shop has returned to its gaming roots from its days in Claremont several years back. The biggest difference between this shop and others is the diversity of the customer base. Not something most talk about but it is noticeable and a positive difference I feel that should be mentioned as a few other shops have a base and staff that honestly don't treat all equally. This makes for a far more relaxed atmosphere as no one is the odd man or odd woman out. I have had to basically corner staff at other shops to get help while the guy that looks like the stereotypical gamer is fawned over. Gameology clearly knows a thing or two about respect and I respect that by mentioning such a touchy subject that plagues Gameshops. The shop is increasing its gaming stock and diversity. Talking to the owner helps to understand that this shop has objectives and is making moves to reach them. As of this writing my suggestion about any game they do not carry is to talk to them and place an order through them as they will work for you to get what you are looking for. The shop itself is clean. It smells clean. It is also kept at a cool temp for gaming comfort. About any smells mentioned by others, you can't blame a shop for someone's personal hygiene. Gamer funk is a personal problem,but they do deploy air fresheners in order to negate any gamer lacking care for the noses of those around then. The shop has been increasing the number of the already plentiful gaming tables. They also welcome gaming groups that don't play what they currently stock. Snacks and beverages are also on sale at reasonable prices for your gaming supply needs. As for the local area it is near the 10freeway and fast food and a great Mexican restaurant south of the shop called Los Portales. The lot is also well lit at night with plenty of parking available. If Chinese buffet is your thing check out panda garden buffet just north of montclair plaza north of the ten. If you have any doubts I would suggest heading down to check it out for yourself. Nothing but positive experiences, and I'm very specific in what I expect from businesses. read more

ummmm...OK where's the beef? Several reviewers here mentioned the supposed "huge" selection. Are you people sure you were in the same store I was? A couple of shelves and that's it!!! The number of games for sale is a small FRACTION of what the Warhouse, Game Empire or Last Grenadier have. Almost NONE of the most popular games were available. Granted, I'm sure they'd be glad to order anything for you, but if you can't take it home with you on the same day what's the point? Might as well shop online. The staff is indeed very helpful and courteous as everyone has indicated, but if they don't have what you want what does it matter? read more

My friends and I started a bit of a love affair with unusual Board Games and some random googling led me to Gameology one day. Great store...huge selection of games, and the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. You can tell they really love the stuff they're selling, and more than once I've been helped through learning a new game by the folks here. As mentioned in the reviews below, the rentals are also a really cool way to check out something new that you aren't sure about. Gameology is, in one word, unique. And by "unique" I do not mean in a negative way. Rather, it is unique in the sense that it has a laid back atmosphere while at the same time maintaining a professional stance. I greatly enjoy coming here, and often spend hours at a time building my deck with the assistance of the friendly and helpful employees. I feel welcomed here, which is a rare trait for me at a gaming store, because I am female and play MTG. We females tend to be looked down on in the Multiverse and often have no credibility, unfortunately. I give 5 stars! read more

Gameology is primarily a store for board games. They do stock a few other game types but not nearly in the quantities of their board games. Their new location is two store fronts joined together, one for retail space and the other open gaming space. The interior isn't as interesting/unique as their previous location but they still have a lot of play space and tons of merchandise to choose from. From the number of people that were in the shop it looks as if the new location will be a success, hopefully. Great store that is highly recommended. You could save a few dollars by shopping on line but then you would lose everything else that a shop like this brings, so please support your local game store. After reading reviews about bad customer service and such I decided to go anyways because I pretty much knew what I wanted and wouldn't need much help- A Catan Expansion. I walked in and there was a group of people in the middle of a game on one of the tables. A guy from the table immediately stood up and greeted me. He asked if I wanted any help. I told him no and went straight to the area where Catan was (which was right by the front entrance coincidentally.) After looking for a few minutes and trying to decide which expansion to get, He got back up and asked if I needed help choosing and he explained the differences between the different expansion sets as well as giving my a recommendation, which was Cities and Knights. I took that and left and he went back to playing his game after ringing me up. I had a great experience there so maybe it's just who you deal with. I wish I remembered his name though. I'll edit my review with it next time I go back and he's there. read more

Gameology is probably my favorite place to play FNM at in forever. They also have a great selection of board games, keep a good stock of recent expansions for TCGs, and have a soda fridge, which is always stocked :) In addition to their store, the tournaments they run are pretty well supported and organized, and I've seen almost every major game take place there (MTG, Yugioh, Pokemon, Warhammer, WoW TCG, and if you count it, Munchkin) read more

This is easily the best game store I've found in California - and I've been searching non stop. The focus is on board and card games, rather than RPGs or hobby shop miniatures, which is right up my alley, and the store is simple and clean. What really gets me going is the huge rental selection available, so you can try before you buy - this especially applies to some of the more involved board games which may be difficult to judge without opening the box. Employees (and customers) are more than happy to teach you the rules or sit down and play a game. read more

Based on all the stellar reviews, I don't know if I came in on an off day or what. First, you know that stereotypical creepy let's all stare at the girl in the boy's club thing? Yeah, that went on for awhile when we got there. Actual in store on display game selection seemed poor and they were sold out of all MTG 2013. Note I found what I wanted at multiple other stores who had clearly ordered more appropriate numbers of the new stuff. Lots of tables for game play and the game rental thing seems pretty cool. When husband and I were leaving after finding out 2013 was sold out my husband was invited back to play on tournament nights while I was assured I'd be able to entertain myself with the other spouses/girlfriends. ...are you for real? I didn't appreciate the assumption I wouldn't be playing as we had already established we were there for both of us. I made it clear again I intend to play and the employee continued to make sexist comments as though I never said a word. This back and forth continued a few more times before we left. Overall I was left with a bad taste in my mouth and will stick with Allstar in San Dimas, Pegasus, and MTG Deals in San Gabriel (a drive, but I'm in the area a lot and they had great selection and customer service, even if I am a girl.) read more

I have been here on about 5 Thursdays over the past year, each time to take advantage of their free in-store board game rentals! Yep, free rentals all day, and with a pretty decent selection too. It's a really good opportunity to figure out what games you want to buy before spending the inevitable $60. The store itself has a good selection. If they don't carry the game you are looking for they can order it for you. I did have a problem last time I ordered a game though. I placed my order, paid upfront for the game, and told them I would be back on the next Thursday and I would pick it up then. I came back a week later and asked for my game and they chose this moment to tell me that the game I had already ordered and paid for was not actually available. They had my phone number, they could have called to tell me earlier that they couldn't get my game. So, I ordered another game instead. This one was cheaper than the previous game by $5, but they wouldn't reimburse me, giving it to me instead as store credit (though this I sort of took on their word because they don't give out physical cards or anything, I just have a $5 credit under my name within their system). The whole ordeal seemed somewhat unprofessional and I would hesitate to order from them again. From now on I'll just stick to buying the games they actually carry. read more

Just went in looking for pre-con commander decks from 2016 and we get an interrupted response, "They're not out yet." Uhm how about you let the customer finish talking and then give a response. Very rude and very unhelpful. I see now why my friends no longer come here. All we needed was a simple answer and it was met with instant attitude. Get better customer service! read more

Played in a warhammer tournament today. The tournament started late, and the TO wasn't really in the room like at all. During one of the games my opponent pulled a Houdini and moved a dude onto an objective without declaring it or advancing. Did t see this til way later cause he never said it. Not the shop's fault on that directly, but he wasn't even around monitoring games or available in the immediate room to ask questions. The tournament also was only 2 rounds and here is where the slimey and just frankly cringe comes in: as time is expiring I'm declaring an attack from a Tank commander with a punisher cannon into a blob of nurglings with 4 wounds left. 40 shots hitting on 3s wounding on 2s. My opponent even admitted you would of killed those obviously. TO said times up dice stop, I protested that this would decide the game, as killing these would of won the game by a point for me, wouldn't of been the case anyway had the TO been around to make rulings on the Houdini movement or him saying "intent is to be within 3in" when he wasn't of an objective, but anyway he won't let me roll it. Legit a 30 second affair on the dice app. The kicker for all this is, he asks after the game who wants to play a 3rd round, and after what happened I didn't. He tells the other guy who was 2-0, as I should of as well been 2-0, he wins. Just comes off as convenient that he rules not in my favor, so that now only one guy is 2-0 rather than two being so, so he can clock out. Plus he seemed to know the guy. Just came off as super shady. Plus if you're going to advertise the tournament as 3 rounds play 3 rounds, start on time, and monitor some games. Wouldn't recommend playing 40k here for ITC points. Wouldn't come back. read more

awesome! ever since my husband convinced me to try settlers of catan i've been interested in board games... not monopoly or scrabble necessarily, but thoughtful, logical, typically european games that involve strategy and oftentimes complicated instructions. and gameology is the haven of such games! gameology is divided into two sections - the left side offers a huge assortment of games at pretty decent, comparable-to-online-merchants prices. the right side has a bunch of tables, home-made-constructed benches, and a ton of games that are available for in-store rental (an amazing $2 per game), take-home rental ($10, but if you decide to purchase it the $10 goes towards the game), and various tournaments. the crazy-cool deals: on thursdays is free in-store game rental night and saturdays is $2 all day! a great place to go to find those hard-to-find board games and, although i have yet to try, a great spot to try out some games and meet fellow board game junkies! read more

Friendly atmosphere, stopped by after being in town, bought some sleeves, decent prices

Idc what anyone says this place is awesome to play intellectual games , meet gamers, and find a variety of board games. Everything in there makes me curious and want to play. But don't bother if you don't have the patience to learn. I def would market this to those in college or teens that want a hobby of board gaming (whoever is bored in Ontario) wish this store got more credit bc it def deserves it. This is my favorite game store! I play Pokemon here and they've always got people in the store! These guys are great, a lot better than some other game stores I've been to. They've got a really nice space separate for each card/board game. Good pricing on certain games, cards, supplies, and sleeves. The staff is fun, friendly, very knowledgeable, and respectful, and if they don't know an answer to your question they won't BS something. They'll tell you they don't know but will get an answer for you. read more

Absolutely love this place! Stu was real helpful educating us on games and the variety of services they offer: rentals, preordering, and backstock. For $10 you can take a game home for 3 days. If you enjoyed the game, you can purchase the same game and they will apply your $10 towards your purchase. If you want a game they do not currently carry, they can order it and you'll receive 20% off! Cassidy was super sweet on the phone line, the staff here is great! Come visit this store!
