I've gone to this store since I was a child, back when it was in Claremont. It is one of those places that is always warming and welcoming. I've played Magic as my main hobby since I was six, and the older I've gotten the more into it I have become. When Gameology moved to Montclair, I stopped going, since gas prices had risen and my parents no longer wanted to drive to take me. When I came back, I saw a store in disrepair under the previous owner, Dave. He was a nice guy, but clearly didn't have the taste for a business. However, with the change in ownership a few years ago, Gameology has done nothing but grow. It has regained the environment that it once had in Claremont, and I believe firmly that it has even surpassed that in the past few months. It the perfect place for both competitive and casual gaming. The staff is friendly and helpful, even on a "off day," and you will be hard pressed to find any egregious prices. Most of the time, Gameology sets the standard for low prices on any item you are looking for. Whether you are a college student looking for a hobby, a parent looking for a good family game, or a child seeking a mystical world to escape to, Gameology has it all. I am pleased to write this review for a store that has maintained such a friendly environment for any kind of gamer. read more

Really nice customer service, however board game selection was severely lacking. They helped me find something that would work, but after driving 2 hours I'm sorry to say that, for board games at least, I would've been better off at Barnes & Noble. That being said, if you're into magic the gathering (I'm not personally) this seemed like a good place. They offered to order whatever I needed which was nice, but I'm too far away for that to work. read more

The service is always accommodating. There's always someone to play with. Plenty of variety and if you don't see what you like they will order it for you. Of course you can bring your own games. If you have none... no worries! Renting is $10 to take it home for three days. $2 in the store. read more

My friend just recently introduced me to MTG, i was looking for a good shop with great prices and came across this shop. The staff there was very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt very welcome as soon as i stepped into the shop, they even gave me a promo card. Stu and Kevin were extremely nice. They have plenty of tables to play MTG and other card games. Went in to the shop to try and pick up some singles. Selection was not that great but that's not why I'm giving it such a low rating. It was the HORRIBLE customer service. For starters the guy looked annoyed that we we're even in there and when I asked him if he carried any old sealed product he told me that no store carries that and had a very rude and annoyed tone of voice kind of acting like I was stupid for asking. I've been to stores that DO carry old sealed product so I was very put off by his rude attitude and it didn't make me want to buy anything from him. I think he should take some business advice and not be rude to potential customers especially if I was willing to spend a good deal of money when I initially walked in but I will not be returning any time soon and I recommend people stay away unless they enjoy bad customer service at a shop that has a very poor selection of cards. read more

Finally...a store for gamers. I read many positive reviews for a game called Settlers of Catan 6 years ago online. I bought it online and been playing it ever since. My friend in Claremont notified be about Gameology so I thought I would check it out. WOW! Settlers of Catan is a great game, but there are so many others out there as well. Gameology turned me on to Carcassonne and Cities & Knights of Catan. Their new location in Montclair is fabulous. Several attributes make Gameology my favorite game store: 1. Personnel understand how the games are played. 2. There are game days where you can play with other people without owning the game. 3. Variety. There has to be hundreds of different games inside. 4. Rent games before you buy...what a concept! :) If you are not a "game person," visit Gameology and tell them so. I cannot tell you how much closer you get to family and friends after playing games together. It is important to note that many of the "European style" games Gameology sells attract non-gamers because of their different style of play. Take shooting video games as a quick counterexample. The object is often to destroy your opponent leading to people yelling at the TV set or worse, each other! On the other hand, several "European-style" games such as Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion, San Juan, Puerto Rico, etc. offer players opportunities to build establishments earning victory points. Often you need to work with your opponents to reach a goal. What I find about these games is the increased communication between players in a positive tone. While you are still ultimately trying to earn more victory points than your opponents, the people that lose are: often close to winning, see what they could have done differently to win, want to try again to improve their game similar to how a golfer might think playing golf. read more

Gameology recently moved to a new location in Montclair (9742 Central Ave). The new space is really amazing -- tons of playing room, lots and lots of retail space. I can't believe how many games they stock (certainly more than I'll ever be able to learn). I'm definitely going to keep this place in mind when it comes time to do my Christmas shopping. While the staff are wonderful and the space inviting, some of the customers could really benefit from a shower. read more

This store is best described as a jack of all trades. Comics, board games, CCGs, Warhammer 40k, and -plenty- of gaming space makes this a welcome addition to any neighborhood. It's just a few short blocks south of the 10 freeway, with a Burger King and a pizza place within walking distance. Or if you really wanted to, you can drive a couple of blocks for Chinese, Mexican, or hit the Claremont mall's food court. There's plenty of parking, even on tournament days when the store's bursting at the seams. Not to say they don't have quiet nights where you can just hang out. They actually have board games for -rent-, so there's always something to do. read more

Gameology has become one of my favorite gaming spots. whether its casual board game days or FNM, the store is much bigger than other shops ive been to. Theres also a mini fridge with refreshments and a freezer with food for purchase. All with a nifty little microwave to boot. You really cant beat that kindve service in a game shop. Seriously? I've visited this location twice, and was disappointed. Living in Fontana, I traveled about 30 minutes to this store and the first time I was completely ignored by the gossiping cashiers, or at least one seemed to work there and the other just stared at me like I had shit on face! The second time I thought I'd give them another chance but service was sub-par once again. The employee who was working at the time was too busy talking to his buddies to the point that I stood at the register for about twenty minutes without any service. The selection is mediocre, Target has a wider variety of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, and the Cardfight! Vanguard selection was a couple boxes of singles and ONE booster box, the yugioh singles were good but don't plan on seeing any sealed packs or decks. The employees were very excellent i had a great time in this store. However the manager was very rude disrespectful towards all of the tournament players. I came to play in the tournament because as advertised 100% payout. During the middle of tournament games the manager comes over and says "you guys better pick up this trash or else everyone getting prize money will be deducted". SERIOUSLY? I am a paying customer you have employees tell them to pick up the trash it is not my responsibility to pick up OTHER people's trash especially if its not my store. I have difficulty seeing why some people would give Gameology a bad review, the staff is kind as are the customers. I am a regular and say with the most sincerity that if you want to pick pretty much any game weather it's D&D or Warhammer 40k some one at Gameology will teach you and tell you everything you could want to know about. the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is that I miss the days when they sold comics, but the owner has explained why and I understand why they no longer do. The worth of this store will vary depending on your needs and expectations. About half the space is a dedicated gaming area, and half the remaining space is devoted to Warhammer. They have a few board games if you're looking to buy something, but the selection really doesn't compare to other game stores. read more

I randomly walked in here thinking it was a video game store man was I surprised. At the time they still sold comic books I picked up some good Walking Dead novels and some cheap Marvel and DC comics for like 50 cents a piece because they weren't gonna reup on new issues and they where trying to get rid of them (Good for me) wish they still carried comics though I liked walking in and just reading a issue unbothered in piece for hours but I came in here on a Friday night once and it was cracking they had a tournament with like 50 people in the place and some kid was dress as a evil wizard or something haha it was hilarious the only things I can say bad about this place is every time I would go in for a comic the cashier would ask me if I wanted him to hold my comics at the register til I was ready to pay almost accusing me of stealing so I stopped going after feeling awkward a couple times and some of the staff and store smells like B.O I'm not trying to be mean but this place is nerd/ virgin vill and they probably never had a girl friend in their lives to tell em what personal hygiene is so its understandable I guess haha read more

I have tried going to Gameology for MTG events a few times now, and every time is the same. The events start late and are very disorganized. The place is filthy, it looks like it hasn't ever been cleaned. The tables and chairs are covered in grime and black stains and the bathroom has a pungent urine smell. The staff members were extremely rude and unpleasant to deal with. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Staff is super helpful and nice! You could tell these guys were serious about games and their level of gaming-expertise seemed pretty high; however, they were still really patient with our novice-level questions and game search, and Stu was able to help us narrow it down and find a winner. When they didn't have the game in stock he ordered it for us and then let us have their rental copy until ours came in (which was awesome b/c we were shopping for a game to play that night). Prices were very reasonable for board games ($40-$60 mostly--which, for a game that you can play and stay in for the night rather than pay to go out is reasonable--if you have just two board game nights with your friends rather than hit the bars these games have already payed for themselves). Don't buy your games on amazon or ebay if you can give these guys your business! They are reasonably priced and very knowledgeable. read more

Went back recently and found the staff (owner?) much more friendly and interested in my gaming wants/needs/interests. Did get rid of the comics, which is probably for the better. The game selection is okay, I ended up purchasing an expansion for netrunner. The shop does look a little worst for wear but nothing so much that it would turn me away from the shop. May try an evening game session and see what the gaming community is like and follow-up with another update. read more

Gameology is the the Inland Empire's "friendly local game store". The store has comics, CCG tournaments, miniatures, and so forth, but I go there because it's the best place around for boardgames. They have nights when you can rent games in-store for free, or you can always take them home for a couple of days and if you decide to buy the rental fee goes towards your purchase. Twice a month there's all-day open gaming for only $2 per person, including use of the rental games at the store, and the times I've gone have been quite fun. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful (and will play games with you when they can), they generally have a very good selection of "Euro-style" games, and prices are typically around MSRP. read more

In the three years since I wrote my last review, the magic the gathering component of this store has gone down dramatically. The new store owners are abrasive, egotistical, and overbearing. They have alienated many, if not most, of their original core group of players from when the store was in Claremont and first moved to Montclair. Their FNM prize support is minimal and not a 100% payout as Wizards of the Coast states it should be. Unfortunately, I don't see this store improving any time soon until another change of ownership happens. With all the other options available in the inland empire, it would be best to choose another store for magic. read more
