This could be the greatest video game sales store in the USA. Neil is not only the owner but has a history and passion in this market. He used to sell used VHS and video games to the rental places. Not only is this place just a store, it kind of doubles as a video game history museum. They have everything from PONG to PS3. 2019 update: now that GameZone stocks a wide variety of new games (such as Nintendo Switch) as well as pre-owned/vintage, now I really have no reason to go to a big-box store for games. Pros: - Amazing collection of games and systems - Great location - Supporting a local business The only con is that just like GameStop, you're ALWAYS better off selling your stuff independently than trading it in. I bought two semi-rare games worth a total of $70 here a few months ago. I finished them, and went back to trade them (and some others) in for a new game. They offered me $20. I came across some hard to find gaming systems, and they do ship! The employees were very friendly despite the big crowds that were coming in and out that day. They were very knowledgeable about anything that I was looking at and weren't irritated by my questions and requests. Went into this store a week ago with my girlfriend and she bought a couple games from different consoles, one of them being GTA Vice City. Went home that night to see that GTA didn't work on her PS2 saying it was "unreadable". Brought the game back to the store later that week and told the man working my issue. I did not have a receipt on me, think I threw it out, and he said he would resurface the game for me, but without a receipt and because he did not personally sell it to me, another employee did, this was all he could do. Went home that night and the game still did not work. I returned to the store the next day to ask for help again. The 2 employees that did sell me the game, one of them is Neal, said they remembered selling me the game and helped me out without any question. They gave me a new disc entirely of the game and answered and questions I had. The guys working there are amazing with helping any problems you have as much as they can, are always friendly, and are very understanding. Plus the game collection and consoles they sell are amazing. Such a giant range of games, almost anything you want you can find. Will definitely go here again. Really cool place, very neat and organized, and a general good group of guys. I don't buy many of the newer games they have because the prices can be a bit steep (in their defense it's tough to keep up with big name game store prices as a small business) but their retro game supply is where they really shine. The guy was so rude he barely even spoke mainly just grunted. When I asked if he had a game in stock he rolled his eyes and asked me if it was on the wall I told him I did not see it he then replied well than I guess we don't have it! Just straight up rude! Not to mention their way over priced! I went back a couple of weeks after I left my first review and the "grumpy guy" was actually really nice. He was more helpful the second time, and he even went out of his way to make sure a found what I was looking for. I guess everyone has bad days. Amazing place. Carries the popular new titles, but the best part is the old games. They had the Game Threads of Fate, which I've searched long and hard for ever since playing it as a child 10+ years ago. I'm only 18, but even I felt incredible nostalgia looking at the huge selection of PS1 and N64 games. And the prices were still reasonable ($30-40 for old Final Fantasies, which cost a lot more online). I found Game Zone as an out-of-town visitor touring the area and I was pleasantly surprised! My husband recently had over 4K of games and systems stolen out of state and we've been actively looking for replacement items whenever we stumble upon a store. I went in with my list of stolen items and the employees were very helpful, great to work with, and friendly. Once they found out that we were replacing items that we already owned, they gave me a great deal and about $10 off of my purchase. The prices are pretty comparable- they even looked up some of the games online in front of us to make sure their prices were similar to ones you could buy on eBay or Amazon. I know a lot of the reviews are saying this place is overpriced but I think most of these people don't understand what a huge market old gaming is now. After trying to replace our items from various places all over the country, I now know that the prices for vintage games and systems are expensive. I found their prices to be pretty standard of many stores I've visited so I'm not sure how accurate these complaints are. I also know that a return policy (like some of the other reviews are complaining about) are very par for the course of any gaming store, independently owned or not. I come from the Seattle area where gaming is huge and this is pretty standard- store credit and a lower trade-in value. read more

It's really unfortunate that I have to leave a one-star review. My wife and I visit Salem each year and I make sure to check-in at Game-Zone to see if they've updated their pricing to reflect reality. Sadly their pricing is still on high-end (laughably so). Please take note of the other reviews on yelp as they note the pricing. In the age we live in, with information at our fingertips, there is no reason to pay 150% the going rate for any video game. The inventory is very impressive, but it makes sense because they aren't moving the product other retro video game stores do due to their pricing. If you're in the area, stop in, it's fun to visit just to look. Who knows, you might see a game in there that you forgot about from your childhood. If this happens, I'd suggest you pull out your smart phone and buy it on ebay or amazon and with the money you save, treat yourself to a nice lunch or supper in Salem. read more

It's the type of place you should know what it is before you walk in, if you're looking for a mainstream, everyday type of gaming store (such as a gamestop,) you are in the wrong place. They do have new games, but gamezone excels when it comes to throw backs. Classics up to new gen, they have a good choice. I go there only for N64/PS2 gen and back, but one major set back is that the prices seem to be picked by a gamer who actually knows the value of old games so you cannot get a steal and get every SNES game for 5 bucks. That all being said, I really like going there, it is a great place to find an old gen game. The staff seemed to all be gamers too. In the end a great place. read more

At first I was excited to see several rarer old games. However I bought four games and two of them didn't work. They don't have a competitive return policy "needs to have original receipt, within 30 days, store credit only", so when I went to return the games you can imagine how bummed out I was. This return policy seems to capitalize on the fact half their games don't work. The first time I figured it was a fluke as they claim to test all their games. However then the second game didn't work and when I went back they treated me like I was a criminal, claiming "well this is the second game you've returned to us" to which my response was "well this is the second faulty game you've sold me". It was like pulling teeth to get anything but store credit. Don't bother wasting your time here. I've always just been disappointed shopping here. I really wanted to like this place to support a small business but I can't. read more

This is without any question the worst game store I have ever been in. I'm a serious, high end collector and I like to visit as many independent game stores as I can, as I am always looking for rare items for my collection. I do have to say these guys had quite an inventory of rare games but they are all ridiculously overpriced, and that's if they even want to sell them to you at all. The first title I saw that I was interested in was Misadventures of Tronne Bonne. I asked the price and was told $500. Tronne Bonne regularly sells online for $120-150. When I called the employee out on the price I was told that it's "part of their collection" and they don't want to sell it because it's so rare but since people kept asking about it they decided to price it at an amount that no one would want to pay for it. Do you guys know anything about games? Tronne Bonne is not that rare a game and the very fact that you don't want to sell it and would price it at quadruple its market value is beyond ridiculous. And then I saw they had Bubble Bath Babes on their shelf. This is one of the rarest games on the NES and is one I've been trying to win on eBay for years. I asked about the price and if I had been quoted a reasonable price I would have had my credit card on the counter in a heartbeat. Instead I was told it was not for sale. I want to be clear that this game was not in a special case or anything like that, it was just on a shelf with other games that were for sale (same with Tronne Bonne). Silly me thinking you were selling the games on your shelf. The employee seemed shocked that I would even ask if it was for sale. "You know how rare that game is," I was told, as though that was all the justification needed for not selling it. Yes, I know how rare that game is. That's why I wanted to buy it. I was so angry after that exchange that I stormed out. I can't remember the last time my experience at a store made me that angry. Are you guys collectors or are you a game store? Because if you're collectors do like the rest of us do and keep your collection at home to show off to your friends. I came in to your store ready to spend big money and walked out empty handed because you don't want to sell anything of value in your store. From now on I'll be taking my business to other game stores in New England, who have all adopted this crazy policy of actually selling games to their customers regardless of how rare they are. I'm sure this place is a fine establishment if you're looking for some cheap DS games to shut your kids up in the car but I want to warn all serious collectors: stay far away from this place. These guys are a joke and are not worth the time or the effort it takes to pay them a visit. If you're in New England and you want to shop for rare collectible games I'd recommend paying That's Entertainment in Worcester and Fitchburg a visit instead. They have a killer selection and always have some cool rare games on their shelves that they're actually willing to sell you. read more

Great staff, great selection, fair/comparable prices to Amazon. Hang out and get to know these great guys... they will take care of you once they get to know you. To the haters in these reviews... Why don't you try to sell your old vinyl records to a used record store... try to sell vintage clothing to a vintage clothing store... and while you're at it, open a retro video game store and try to run it as you describe... with cheap prices... You'd be out of business in a week ! Do you realize how much overhead it takes to run a business ? Rent, taxes, employee pay, etc...? Get real,.. or just stay at home and order from ebay... you'll never know what you will end up with, plus Amazon or ebay won't resurface your discs for free for life like Gamezone does...
