But on the way back we were pretty drunk so it didn't matter. It's a nice little Irish dive bar. Who would've thought Spain would have Irish bars? Also kind of reminded me of Cheers, the TV show. Well, our first night in Madrid after my buddy and i picked up our third buddy from the airport, we went straight to the bar to celebrate our arrival in Spain. We ordered shots and supposedly shots are called "chupitos" in Spain. The lady bartenders laughed at us. I think they were 3 or 4€s. After that we had beers, i think Heinekens which were 2€s. Nothing special. Just a good ol' Irish pub. We were excited that this place closed at 4am but then we realized that's just standard out in Spain.

So yes this was the only bar close to the Hotel Nuevo Boston and we thought it couldn't possibly be…read morethat bad. Well it's not that bad if you only have drinks here. The nachos we ordered had cold stadium type nacho cheese on them with a small side of artificial guacamole. The burger we ordered was incredibly rare to the point where we didn't know if that's how they do it in Spain or if they just don't know how to cook a hamburger. We gave up and ate the bread. Fish and chips were soggy but edible. Have a few drinks, the place is busy but don't eat the food.

I need to give credit where credit is due. Mad(drid) Brewing has an excellent Imperial IPA. Maybe…read moreit's because I'd been walking all day, or because I hadn't enjoyed an IPA in a while.. regardless it was a great beer. Their Imperial IPA pour is rich with a smooth intake that's slightly sweet followed by a very mild bitter finish. No overbearing piney or earthy taste. Just a superbly balanced beer. I also tried their lager, but I didn't get a second round. The bartenders were excellent and provided good service. To be honest, I enjoyed their Imperial enough to give my compliments to the brewer. Patatas and peanut mix were also a good pair to the beers. Just my thoughts, as someone who has consumed craft beers from across the United States. Check it out!

The ribs melt from the bone and to your mouth, the burgers are juicy and meaty, the sausage cooked just right, the beer goes down easy and the desserts are mouthwatering. We came back to Madrid two days early so we could visit La Fragua one more time before we flew home. This is a very simple restaurant plopped down in the middle of a Madrid suburban neighborhood. From the outside it is only a door in a wall of an office building but inside it is a delightful restaurante serving a great version of Cocido Madrileno. The patrons we observed on both of our visits appeared not to be strangers which made us believe the quality of food brings locals back time and again. The English here is limited to non-existent but communication is easy. On our second visit the house was full and we arrived without reservations but they made a table for us anyway and treated us very graciously. To be sure we sampled other dishes during our two visits but the Cocido will have us coming back. Their house wine is Ramon Bilbao and the inventive tapas that accompany every meal are not only tasty but mini works of art. We came here twice...we will come back again.
