The gamjatang is easily one of the best I've had in LA, rich, flavorful broth with plenty of tender pork that falls right off the bone. I feature this business for the stew in my Food Reviewing Dungeon Meshi panel. Came here ages ago with my best friend and her father. Great place to get some hearty stew on a cold day, during lunch or dinner. Super generous portions and definitely enough to take home for later as well. Restaurant is quite spacious and with lots of booth seating, but I can only imagine how busy it could potentially get. There's plenty of parking in the plaza since the 2 main stores/market chains are now closed. For our visit we got a medium gamja jeon-gol, which is their spicy pork bone soup with potatoes. There's a slight heat to it, but not super spicy as I was with some Cantonese people who can't handle spiciness, so they had it at mild. Still a rich umami taste with flavor to it. Pork is moist and plentiful and so are the potatoes. There's also lots of greens and I think, leeks in the stew. Lots of banchan to snack on too and all of us got a small bowl of purple rice as well (my favorite!) About 1/3 of the way through, we packaged most of the stew to go and we had our complimentary fried rice which is made inside the same pot as the stew, absorbing the delicious stew flavor. There's nori seaweed strips and sesame seeds added in for taste and flavor too. Good stuff. Came here on a rainy Friday during lunch time. It was completely empty when I arrived which made me wary, but I'm always down to try a new hole in the wall. I ordered the gamja tang which is $2 cheaper than dinner price, and came with soo much meat. FYI, this is a Korean owned business with a very traditional old school type of service and feel, and it is not really catered towards our super western and gentrified friends who expect service to be highly revolved around them. Workers are very old school Korean-Americans and are not really up to speed to some who are more used to a culture of excellent service. Not to say there aren't negative things about it, but it's also like a complicated cultural thing that just can't be helped. It's more for like many old school immigrants like my mom who love this place. It's $40 for the small, $50 for the medium, and $55 for the large (before tax). After trying the medium and large sizes, we concluded that we should definitely get the small next time LMAO it's so much food! We usually go on a weeknight and get seated immediately. The servers are friendly and attentive, a welcome surprise for an Asian establishment. The joint has a old mom and pop feel, with gas burners built into each table. The salt levels of the banchan seem to be hit or miss. On my first visit, the fish cake was salty. The dipping sauce had too much soy sauce, and the vinegar enhanced the saltiness. The pickled cucumber and daikon was good. On another visit, all the banchan were good. Instead of fish cake and cucumber, there were spinach and bean sprouts. As for the gamjatang, I tasted the umami pork and spices in the thick broth. I think the perilla leaves added an earthy scent. As the broth reduced over time, the soup got saltier and soaked into the creamy potatoes. The meaty neck bones became fall-off-the-bone tender. You gotta use your hands and get 'em dirty. My friend asked for a side of rice, but I held off knowing there was fried rice included with the meal at the end. The rice was made at our table using our reduced broth, kimchi, and chives. Its flavor was savory, porky, and sour with the bright kimchi. SOOO good! On another visit, we also added a side of vegetables for $4. They brought out an overflowing bowl of chives and perilla leaves. I turned the heat to a low simmer, so the soup didn't get too salty. I felt slightly healthier after these changes. We came a bit late that night and tried to finish up as they were closing. They cooked our fried rice separately in the kitchen. Shout out to Ji O. for this awesome gamja tang recommendation! I was in the Rowland Heights area with my mom and I was looking for a lunch spot to take her after her cupping appointment. You won't get any attention unless you flag them down to order, ask ban chan refill, or get your check. At first they wanted to seat us at a small two people booth but after I told them what I wanted to order they moved us to the bigger table for the stove top. We had the small family pot of the Gamja Tang that could have fed 3-4 people. That portion was more than enough for the two of us but I wanted a cold dish to compliment the meal so I also ordered the Ssam Bap with Pork. The total after tax but before tip was about $60. Just noting that I would have preferred to order the Bo-ssam but they do not serve it until dinner. I felt so bad cause later on my mom saw a photo of it on the wall and said wow that looks good. I was like right?? I knew she would like it so that's why I wanted to order it... but they did not offer it. The business should reconsider because 3 of the neighboring tables that came at the same time as we did for lunch also asked for the bo-ssam. I mentioned it to Ji O. and she said there are times she comes for dinner and they "run out". So who knows when/if they were have it. Sigh. Anyways my mom LOVED the flavors! She enjoyed the troubles of picking the meat from the bones and the flavor of the gamja tang soup. The ssam bap was nice with the pork well marinated and we had fun wrapping it with vegetables. I enjoyed the flavors of the gamja tang but the bone situation was a lot of work and quite a mess to eat. And I recommend wearing dark colors cause if you get the soup on you it stains. Pro tip by Ji O. - She told me I could ask for a fried rice at the end. Once we were fairly full we packed most of the food togo. They took a bit of the flavored soup base and added some rice and minced kimchi and veggies. It had great flavor and contrasting textures with the bites from the vegetables and the burnt rice pieces. Walked in and the lady welcomed us in Korean and once she realized we didn't speak Korean, it was game over. She literally walked back in and someone else came out and we eventually got seated. Sat down and they handed us menus and didn't say a word. We looked and asked the lady what was shown in the photo and she had no idea. Since the first page is all photos we just wanted to know what we were gonna order and she just stared at the photo saying in Korean 'what's that. I wonder what that is' (I understand some Korean but cannot speak it whatsoever). So we just google translated the food we wanted and ordered. Food arrived and she gave us some water cups. Service was literally non existent and it's not just bc they have bad customer service. It was just us. Literally EVERYONE else spoke Korean and everyone else was served. They even refilled every tables water and left ours. We even purposely tapped it to show we were out of water and they just walked by us. We had to flag them down for the bill and to refill our water too. Food wasn't cheap and wasn't the best either. 15$ for a bowl of cold noodles is hella expensive for the amount they give you. Plus with their attitude it really isn't worth a penny. Luckily for them we still tipped them 10% but I didn't want to give them a penny! What a horrible experience. This place is legit. Expect to wait 30-40 minutes for the stew to come out when it's packed, but it is well worth the wait. Come with friends and drink some BekSeju and the time will pass quickly. The bossam is so yummy! The samgyupsal is cooked perfectly and comes with all the fixings. This was my first experience eating gamja jeon gol and I loved it. It's kinda like eating crab...having to pick at your bones for the meat. I'm a sucker for bones though and love all the collagen. Next time I will definitely add more veggies. Gam Ja Gol has been our favorite pandemic restaurants for takeout. With gamja in their name, I have only tried their gamjatang, and nothing else. They have different sizes of gamjatang available for purchase from a small lunch portion to a large portion that can feed four or more. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food that they give you. They did set up some tables outside for outdoor dining. They have recently started indoor dining with reduced capacity. The food is a generous portion containing lots of pork neck and not too much potato. When we ordered the large portion, we ended up with so much food that we made 3 meals out of it. The large portion is enough for my wife and I to share. The food is packaged with much care. It is in a plastic tupperwarelike container and sealed to prevent it from spilling on your drive home. I've ordered on phone and in person. The owners seemed to have understood me each and every time I've interacted with them and have given me what I want. I like it. First time here. Our party of 3 enjoyed the medium Gamja Jeon Gol, Spicy Pork Bone Soup with Potatoes. It's what everyone comes here for. The pork meat falls off the bone and is really tender. Tip: After they bring out the pot, let the pork and all ingredients simmer in the broth to soak up all the flavor. Feel free to turn down the fire/heat so the broth/stew doesn't bubble out of the pot. At the end, when you think you're done eating, they'll ask if you want complimentary fried rice that comes with the Gamja Jeon Gol. Say yes and they'll pour out any remaining stew and ingredients into a separate bowl and prepare their version of fried rice, right in front of you. The fried rice is a little mushy and made with the same stew broth, kimchi, gim (edible seaweed), spring onions, and rice. I really enjoyed it and recommend everyone to try. *Outdoor dining during covid times* I was visiting home and wanted to meet up with a couple friends. They wanted to do outdoor dining, but I was super nervous since the setups I've seen are definitely not socially distanced. But I'm so glad we came here! My friend made a "reservation" for a table at 6pm on a Saturday. It really made no difference as there was no one else waiting, and we had to wait for the prior tables to finish anyway. I deeply appreciated that there are just 2 separated tents with one table per tent. Later on, there was an additional table placed to the side, which made for 3 tables total. I appreciated the restaurant ensuring their guests' safety even if it meant sacrificing some much needed profit. We each got the gam ja tang ($13), as apparently that's what this place does best. I've never had it before but it was so good! Their portion is huge so be prepared to be full. The meat was really tender, and there's a big hunk of potato in the soup. The banchan arrived in a pre-made bento box packaging. The server was very attentive and always asked if we needed anything else. I ordered out togo from this joint a week back: the menu was limited due to smaller operating capacity- i found out what was available for the day and went with the kimchee-pork belly stirfry and a soup togo: it came with the usual Korean accoutrement aka banchan, which were excellent btw -a hallmark of a decent Korean restaurant. The highlight was definitely the pork belly stirfry, I'd order this again in a heartbeat : the kimchee/aromatics were bordering carmelization, sweet, salty and tangy- and out from these background flavors emerged the gelatinous, satisfying bite of the fall-appart pork belly. We also ordered their vegetable pancake. Everything was so so so delicious!! The stew tasted amazing, the meat came off the pork bones so easily, so yummy. After the soup was pretty much gone, they then brought purple rice and mixed everything in. It created a whole new meal. Just fantastic. So yeah this place is worth coming here and eating! All in all I would give this place 4.5 stars! The only .5 missing was us not getting our waters refilled lol, but it's okay we could've been more persistent. This place serves some good Gam Ja Gol, but their customer service is terrible. At around 430pm, my wife made a reservation for the two of us for their outdoor dining for 6pm. At 557pm, the restaurant called us asking how far away we were and telling us it was 6pm already. They said they had a table that they just sat a table ahead of us and it would be a while. We were frustrated that they gave up the table that we reserved. Reluctantly, we still ordered one Gam Ja Gol and we got there promptly at 6pm. They only have one table for outdoor seating and there was absolutely no one there. They lied to us. We would have ordered more food if we were given the opportunity to eat there. Our thoughts are they got a reservation request for a bigger group, so they'd rather have the bigger bill than just a party of two. Anyways, the Gam Ja Gol we got had great flavor and was a decent size. Not enough for two people to share, but they give a lot of meat. The soup had a deep flavor and not spicy at all. I would recommend getting the food but I won't be returning until this phase of COVID is over. read more
