    Gamja Tang / 감자탕

Delicious cozy Korean food! My mum and I went to tried their Gamja Tang: it was hearty and the bones were tender, perfect for cold weather. The servers were friendly but wasn't that attentive. Asian mum improved

I came in on a Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 pm and ordered the gamja tang lunch. The portion size is very generous, and I felt full after finishing my meal. The ribs were tender and absorbed the soup's flavor well, and the meat was easy to scrape off. There are bits of collagen on the bones as well which I throughly enjoyed. I didn't feel bloated either thanks to the refreshing bonchon. The radish has a nice refreshing taste that balances out the richness of the soup. I would come back to try out their other items.

Came here on a rainy Friday during lunch time. It was completely empty when I arrived which made me wary, but I'm always down to try a new hole in the wall. I ordered the gamja tang which is $2 cheaper than dinner price, and came with soo much meat. It took me 15 minutes to take off all the meat, which wasn't too difficult because the meat fell right off the bone! And it let my soup cool in the mean time. The soup was hearty and packed with pork and potato. Perfect for a rainy day meal! I had to pack my leftovers home because there was so much meat. I took off a star because I was charged $1 for a to go box without the server telling me, which I've never even seen before at a restaurant. My server was nice but I felt rushed and always felt her presence standing behind me. It definitely made me feel uneasy especially since I was one of the few people dining.

Best Gamjatang! It's well cooked and so easy to eat! The meat comes right off from the bone and the soup is not too salty! Must get the fried rice after pork bone soup. I think this spot is better than LA original gamjagol! Must try

Very delicious and good portions! You NEED to come here for their lunch specials. Incredible!! We arrived at 12:30 PM on a Friday and there was no wait. It's a little hidden away between the golf driving range and Greenland. They are known for their gamja tang and bossam, but I ordered the Grilled Mackerel and Doenjang-jjigae. Both were great quality and $16 for lunch. The mackerel was perfectly cooked! If you like oily and salty fish, this is a good option to try. The portions were big and very filling! I highly recommend.

FYI, this is a Korean owned business with a very traditional old school type of service and feel, and it is not really catered towards our super western and gentrified friends who expect service to be highly revolved around them. Workers are very old school Korean-Americans and are not really up to speed to some who are more used to a culture of excellent service. Not to say there aren't negative things about it, but it's also like a complicated cultural thing that just can't be helped. It's more for like many old school immigrants like my mom who love this place. I know very westernized foodies like to try this place and all but they should manage their expectations for everything else other than the food. I know there are things to be critical about, but goodness just let a local small business make a living. But in any case, yes just get the gamjatang, good for 2-3 people maybe 4 because it is super good. This is the only reason you should come here for. Plus they can also make fried rice out of it after you finish up most of it and it is so good! Good place to go just purely for the food! Plenty of parking since it's next to a Greenland market!

Medium gamjatang + side of extra vegetables (chive and perilla)

5 stars for the gamjatang only. I want to try other stuff at Gam Ja Gol, but my friend and I seem to end up gorging exclusively on the spicy pork neck and potato stew. It's $40 for the small, $50 for the medium, and $55 for the large (before tax). After trying the medium and large sizes, we concluded that we should definitely get the small next time LMAO it's so much food! We usually go on a weeknight and get seated immediately. The servers are friendly and attentive, a welcome surprise for an Asian establishment. The joint has a old mom and pop feel, with gas burners built into each table. The salt levels of the banchan seem to be hit or miss. On my first visit, the fish cake was salty. The dipping sauce had too much soy sauce, and the vinegar enhanced the saltiness. The pickled cucumber and daikon was good. On another visit, all the banchan were good. Instead of fish cake and cucumber, there were spinach and bean sprouts. As for the gamjatang, I tasted the umami pork and spices in the thick broth. I think the perilla leaves added an earthy scent. As the broth reduced over time, the soup got saltier and soaked into the creamy potatoes. The meaty neck bones became fall-off-the-bone tender. You gotta use your hands and get 'em dirty. My friend asked for a side of rice, but I held off knowing there was fried rice included with the meal at the end. The rice was made at our table using our reduced broth, kimchi, and chives. Its flavor was savory, porky, and sour with the bright kimchi. SOOO good! On another visit, we also added a side of vegetables for $4. They brought out an overflowing bowl of chives and perilla leaves. I turned the heat to a low simmer, so the soup didn't get too salty. I felt slightly healthier after these changes. We came a bit late that night and tried to finish up as they were closing. They cooked our fried rice separately in the kitchen. It was still tasty, but slightly less flavorful since they did not use our reduced soup. I would go earlier next time.

We came on a Friday night and there was almost a full house. I would say this place has a calm, relaxing atmosphere. There's no loud music playing, and you could actually have decent conversations across the table. There were mostly older patrons and those with families. We ordered a small size of the Korean stew. It was about $40 and enough for 2. Our stew had 4-5 pork bones in it! After the stew, the server makes fried rice for you. The stew was felt like it was homemade, and hit the right spot! We also ordered the pork bossam dish. I loved this dish too! Everything was so simplistic. The pork is very tender and they give plenty of toppings.

Shout out to Ji O. for this awesome gamja tang recommendation! I was in the Rowland Heights area with my mom and I was looking for a lunch spot to take her after her cupping appointment. It was a cold day so soups felt like a good choice. The interior of the restaurant looked a decent size but it was completely full and the staff was very busy. You won't get any attention unless you flag them down to order, ask ban chan refill, or get your check. At first they wanted to seat us at a small two people booth but after I told them what I wanted to order they moved us to the bigger table for the stove top. We had the small family pot of the Gamja Tang that could have fed 3-4 people. That portion was more than enough for the two of us but I wanted a cold dish to compliment the meal so I also ordered the Ssam Bap with Pork. The total after tax but before tip was about $60. Just noting that I would have preferred to order the Bo-ssam but they do not serve it until dinner. I felt so bad cause later on my mom saw a photo of it on the wall and said wow that looks good. I was like right?? I knew she would like it so that's why I wanted to order it... but they did not offer it. The business should reconsider because 3 of the neighboring tables that came at the same time as we did for lunch also asked for the bo-ssam. I mentioned it to Ji O. and she said there are times she comes for dinner and they "run out". So who knows when/if they were have it. Sigh. Anyways my mom LOVED the flavors! She enjoyed the troubles of picking the meat from the bones and the flavor of the gamja tang soup. The ssam bap was nice with the pork well marinated and we had fun wrapping it with vegetables. I enjoyed the flavors of the gamja tang but the bone situation was a lot of work and quite a mess to eat. And I recommend wearing dark colors cause if you get the soup on you it stains. Pro tip by Ji O. - She told me I could ask for a fried rice at the end. Once we were fairly full we packed most of the food togo. They took a bit of the flavored soup base and added some rice and minced kimchi and veggies. It had great flavor and contrasting textures with the bites from the vegetables and the burnt rice pieces. Yum! It took a looooooooong time for me to get the check and togo boxes. The napkins we asked for never came while the food was such a mess to eat. I might need to bring my own napkins next time. Will be back the next time my mom wants this soup, and hopefully they will have the bo-ssam on our next visit.

My lunch yesterday, everything was great, good service, I really like eating grilled fish at this restaurant and the soup is also great. Thanks a lot!

I'm been to this restaurant many times before but recently with couple of church members. The store hours are 11am -9pm all week. We arrived little after 3pm and it was open for business but strangely, menu order was just limited to ; just ONE item : Gamjatang Only !!! None what so ever for an hour between 3-4pm. Because chef is on break for an hour. So we had to wait nearly an hour to order other dishes. Meanwhile eating Gamjatang which was exceptionally delicious. Best Gamjatang ever, meat was tender lots of veggie and very flavorful. By the time we waited an hour eating one dish, finally got to order other dishes but we were kind of getting full and little dredged. Other then that, service was great food was delicious.

Are all their soup spicy or you can just add the spice?

How it comes out definitely has some spice but it's pretty mild in comparison. You can certainly request that it be spicier. They will be happy to make it as spicy as you want.

We kept asking for more and the employees were more than happy to keep them coming! For food, we got the bossam, sulungtang, and yukgaejang. The bossam arrived on this grill that kept it warm throughout the meal, which I can appreciate. The sulungtang and yukgaejang were both phenominal and hit the korean comfort food cravings. Get the purple rice!! Not to mention they had deals on alcohol too. I believe $5 for beer and $7 for a soju bottle -- cant beat that in this economy! The only downside was that our waters were never refilled during the meal, although it honestly looked like there was only one server working at the time.
