I love this place! Found them when I was looking for a queer and trans-friendly hair salon in an accessible area. Everyone I've worked with has been so kind and prompt. I look forward to my hair appointments here because I know they will work magic on my hair and listen to everything I have to say about it. My stylist always asks all the right questions about my hair type, texture, and how I'm regularly taking care of it. She's knowledgeable about the science behind my hair as well, from growth to dryness to volume. She asks how I like to wear it and gives me tips to help me achieve what I want with my hair. Plus, the staff all seem to be friendly with each other and having fun, which always makes an environment feel more positive. I loved my hair the first couple times but I went back and my stylist didn't want to do it and this is what I got. It's lopsided, she didn't do a single thing I requested and charged me $30 she overcharged me. . She was sarcastic and petty, she kept telling me i had the coolest haircut. I've been going here for quite some time getting a scissor cut/trim by a specific stylist. I won't name any names out of respect; however, I am very disappointed in the most recent service I received. My last appointment was quick and rushed which resulted in a horrible trim and I now have split ends that have traveled up my hair shaft. I don't know if the scissors were old, blunt or what have you, but my trim (for a lack of a better term) SUCKED. It "felt good" only for that moment until I had to wash my hair a few days later. I am African American so it's already hard to find stylists who are familiar with black hair to begin with. Even some of my own people don't know what to do! Ironic! In any event, my hair now has to be cut and I am highly upset and will not be going back to this salon. Skip your old salon and come here. Seriously, I mean it. As a girl who's only gotten her nails done twice, well now three times. This is the place to go! I came today and did a wedding nail trial and from the girl who answered the phone to Bethany who did my nails. I was not disappointed. Bethany is a gem! She made me feel at ease and helped me figure out designs and stamps. The girl who was sitting next to her was nice as well. Bethany just let me try stamps to see to see if it would work and if it didn't we went a different route. P.s. Even though my nails are short she didn't even mention putting on fake nails. Love this place. I finally made the switch to a new stylist after a lot of grumbles on my end (I'm very particular about my hair... New stylists make me nervous... Perhaps it's PTSD from that one time a new hairdresser gave me bangs and I looked like Garth from Wayne's World for 6 months...). Anyway, I made an appt to see Amy Pink and she is one hell of a rockstar. She is so speedy and thorough with her highlighting. She knows what she's doing and will offer relevant suggestions to help you look your best. Let's be real, she's the pro here so I followed her advice. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I still get an amazing style without breaking the bank. The salon itself is adorable, very spacious since they moved to Elton St. It's like a mini-gallery (hah, get it) with the art and decor lining the exposed brick walls. You'll feel right at home here -- everyone is chit chatting with each other and having a good time. I could have spent the day there. They might even give you a glass of wine too -- then the fun really begins. That's my ultimate relaxation time. Gallery Salon is the most unique and welcoming salon I've ever been to. They embody the hair-as-concert and have curated their space like an art gallery (complete with rotating artists and art openings). So cool! Their friendly and helpful front desk staff always welcome me, offer me a bevvie while I wait (wine/coffee), and are a joy to talk with. I see Liz (@lizmaceyhairfairy), and she is a delight! I found her last summer while in a stylist gap after my old stylist relocated, and have never been happier with my hair! She thoughtfully noticed my face shape at our first appointment and gave me a new and flattering cut. She also helped me transition from my home coloring with henna, to salon coloring with milkshake products (which I love). I truly enjoy my hair appointments, and chatting with her about podcasts, binge-worthy shows, and local restaurants (she is a fellow yelper!!). From what I've seen of the other stylists, you can't go wrong with any one of them. Gallery is full of talent! I've also received a few bomb manicures here from Kendra and Halley. I am a regular here at Gallery - these salon peeps are amazing. Everyone is always friendly and accommodating and it's obvious they love where they work. Gallery recently moved from University to Elton (a side street right around the corner). It is so beautiful - big - bright and spacious!! They have makeup jewelry and hair products for sale - plenty of room to get your nails done - as well as waxing, hair and relaxation space in the rear. They also feature new artists every few months and display their artwork on the walls!! I wouldn't dream of getting my hair done anywhere else. I unfortunately had my stylist of 15+ years give me a terrible dye job-- I almost immediately called Gallery and booked with Liz for a color correction. It's stressful and emotional when you go somewhere new and I was so confident that a) my hair couldn't get any worse and b) that Liz does masterful coloring. Fast forward to 5 hours later, and my hair was exactly what I asked for! She even helped me plan a course of action for months to come as we deal with the previous damage. I called Gallery one afternoon I had gotten out of work early to see if by chance they could accommodate me because my normal hair stylist could not. I was looking to have a purple balayage done, and the receptionist I spoke to warned me it would probably take two appointments to accomplish what I wanted. Which was 100% okay with me, it was later in the day and I had completely virgin hair that would need to be lightened which understandably takes time. I show the stylist multiple pictures of what color I wanted, as well as how I wanted my hair cut and felt like we had had a really good conversation regarding what I wanted. I started getting nervous when she looked at my wet, lightened hair and told me she would try something new and apply the purple to the wet hair. When I was finished, it looked like she hadn't touched my hair. I had no significant, noticeable blonde or purple pieces. She did try and push to sell me product at the end as well. I ended up calling the next day and speaking to the salon manager who was super nice! She scheduled me with a different girl to fix it and I figured that was the end. They then had the initial stylist call me back to tell me the level and shade my hair was would make purple hard to see because it was put back to the same level when she was done? I'm not exactly sure, it didn't make a whole ton of sense. The day my hair was fixed was super uncomfortable. The original girl that did my hair didn't so much as acknowledge my existence and the girl who fixed my hair made forced small talk then sort of left me in silence. They were chatty with the original girl's client while they both stood next to each other rinsing hair which sort of solidified that maybe they felt offended I had complained? I felt awful about complaining in the first place, and this certainly didn't help. My hair looked great, and she cut it really well but the frosty treatment made for the most uncomfortable two hours. I did end up paying for the product at the second appointment they used. So overall, the reception/front desk staff are 10/10 customer service wise. Their stylists have almost a "too cool" feel and if you are dissatisfied with one everyone in there will know. It felt like I was labeled as a problem, when really I just wanted what I had dropped close to $200 for. I definitely will not be returning due to the treatment I had the second time. read more

This review relates to Nail Services I received at Gallery Salon & Spa. I have NOT had my hair done there and have not experienced any of their other services. I got a gel manicure with french tips and a pedicure at Gallery. I wanted so, so badly for it to be great, because Gallery is a 5 minute walk from my house, but I have definitely had better manicures and pedicures in Rochester. What was good: I didn't have to wait at all when I arrived. They were ready for me right on time. The girl who did my nails was incredibly nice. I really enjoyed her company and she made me very relaxed and comfortable. I love the facility they have. It's relaxing and beautifully decorated. There is ample parking both in front of and behind the building. The chair I sat in for the pedicure was comfortable and had a quiet massager with a remote control I could program myself. I like their products--The scrub she used on my feet smelled wonderful. What was bad: They use cheap cotton pads to remove polish and I ended up with a ton of tiny fibers in my manicure. I think the gel polish she used may have been getting old--it went on thick and I ended up with a finished manicure resembling acrylic nails (due to the thickness of the application). Although smooth, it definitely ended up lumpy in some parts. She wasn't very skilled at painting the french tips--I ended up with some very uneven looking nails and a good amount of polish on the flesh around my fingers. It was just really sloppy with zero attention to detail which is critical to a professional looking french manicure. What was frustrating, but partially my fault: She did my pedicure first, and then the manicure. When we were done with the manicure she knelt down and checked my toes for dryness and declared them "ready for shoes." I put on my shoes, paid the $70, and then went home...where I then discovered they had been wet and the pedicure was destroyed. I should have checked myself. I have my nails done about 1 time every 3 weeks...gonna keep searching for the right place. read more

I came here for the first time yesterday, after being referred by a friend. I had my hair done by Angela P, and she was awesome. She was friendly and offered me a beverage as soon as I arrived. I was feeling brave, and said "do whatever you want, you are the professional, I trust you, just don't give me a pixie cut". She took a ton of hair off, but I love it, I think that she really styled a cut that goes with my face shape well. I needed a last minute trim before vacation and of course, my usual stylist was fully booked. Now, I have a lot of horror stories from my last minute "random" stylist/salon choices (you think I would have learned to plan ahead by now). So, I was hesitant to try a new stylist. After reading the 5 star reviews of Gallery Salon, my decision was made. Gallery Salon is hands down one of the most beautiful salons I have ever set foot into. Modern, industrial tones with warm lighting created a calm and relaxing setting. Even though I was a few minutes late, my stylist never showed any annoyance and got to work right away. I explained I wanted a simple trim and touch up on layers. She efficiently trimmed my hair the length I wanted (thank God...I had a "stylist" who thought cutting off an inch meant giving me a bob...a story for another time). Then, instead of just blowing my hair out, she pulled out a curling iron. I got a little nervous. Stylists in Rochester are very fond of giving me tight curls to make me resemble a not so cute brown Shirley Temple. I couldn't see what she was doing and figured I should give her a shot. Unfortunately, I wish I hadn't. I ended up with the same tight curls I feared. At this point, I had to get back to work and I figured I could just brush them out in the car. At checkout, I was informed my total was $45 (before tip). Their website states haircuts are $32+ so this was more than I expected. I realized I should have asked how much the stylist charged when I made my appointment so I just paid without saying anything. Overall, I don't think the simple trim I got was worth what I paid. Hairstyle preferences vary widely and I just didn't connect with this stylist on that level. When I am ready for a radically different hairstyle, I might try making an appointment with one of the other stylists. The manicure/pedicure area looked inviting so I will be trekking it there to treat myself on a cold winter day. However, I will be sticking to my regular stylist for now ( and getting better at planning ahead! ) read more

When your schedule gets hectic it is easy to forget. Make sure you make an appointment ahead of time though, as most of the stylists are booked a few weeks out. I have been going to the same stylist for over 7 years. Since I made the move to college, I've had such a hard time finding someone who could understand me and my hair needs. After deciding to give Gallery a chance, I realized that I found my new go to place for my hair! I walked in with an open mind but also protective over what my needed to be done on my hair. I was paired with Kathy and she listened to what I wanted for my hair and then she shared her thoughts on what I should expect. I decided to let her work her magic since she seemed excited and confident to give my hair a go. My hair has been dyed for 6 years all sorts of colors and through time, you could begin to see the wear and tear. I went with a cut, new color, and an Olaplex treatment. The end result was amazing! My hair felt so silky and smooth not just that day, but it retained its strength and silkiness the week after. I'm very happy with the results and I feel pretty and confident letting my hair loose. I look forward to coming here again! Edit: I had an appointment I couldn't keep due to not having transportation to get there. I called to reschedule and they slapped on a cancellation fee. I'm a broke college student saving up money to treat myself and due to life happening, they didn't care and manipulated me into paying half of the service because the stylist would lose money. I was hoping they would be sympathetic but no. I lost money too! I hope they were able to survive with the $40+ they took from me. Simply disgusted and saddened. read more

I get my hair cut/trimmed nowhere near as often as I should, but.... when I do, I go to see Miss Amy Pink at Gallery. Everyone here is so amazingly welcoming and warm. Not to mention that the place is beautiful. Eclectic modern and vintage pieces are peppered among the white stone walls. Make sure you get your hair washed so you can stare up at the ceiling filled with colorful glass orbs, it's so soothing. Anywho, Amy is the best. I never know what to do with my unruly mane and her suggestions never disappoint. I leave feeling refreshed and revitalized and I always, always receive compliments on how great my hair looks!
