I love Ape+Canary! It became my go-to spot for a self care day while living in Rochester. Everyone who works there is great - they're friendly, provide excellent services and really go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and have everything you need. I've had everything done from massages to facials to manicures/pedicures to hair appointments. It has all been top notch. I also highly suggest buying a membership so you can take advantages of the services with a member discount! I was a member for two years before moving and, if I didn't have time to get there one month, my membership fee rolled over to use the following month. I absolutely love this salon and spa. I've been a member at Ape & Canary since 2020, I've booked nails, hair, spa services, etc and I am often hard pressed to find a comparable business. Their prices are competitive with Woodcliff, Del Monte, etc, their technicians, therapists and stylists are amazing, and the sanctuary is perfect. I love all of the amenities the spa has to offer, including snacks, beverages, waterfall showers, sauna, and the coziest giant couch you've ever seen. Whenever I have a date with a friend, or when my mom's in town, or when my husband and I just need a day to unwind, A&C is at the top of my to do list. A couple of shout outs - Marlaina is awesome with hair, I love what she's done with my color and cuts, Gabby is amazing with nails, my husband loves going to Josh for his massages, and I love going to Christina and Madelyn for facials. Had a spa package. The massage with Colin was fabulous and I would recommend him. Had a mani/ pedi with Ryen and absolutely never again. She was definitely annoyed that she had to be there, unfriendly and then said well I'll have to charge you to take off the gels you have on and now I'll be behind all day because I don't realize I would also have to gels off. Lots of people have gels removed before putting on new ones! Why was this such an inconvenience for her! The. She said well I just rush and rush she did! Allowed me to come earlier for my appointment to enjoy the space because I would not have been able to do that after my massage due to me Booking so close to closing time. The relaxation area is very cozy. Tempting to curl up by the fire and nap. The way my body is knitted up, I will need sever deep tissues massages to get it back in working order. So .. my story begins with a dear friend introducing me to Ape & Canary after it had changed from the Strathallan Spa and suggested I have a facial .. I did on her recommendation as she has excellent taste and I trust her implicitly! My facial was performed exquisitely by Jessica who, at what appears to be a young age, has the skill set of a seasoned professional from Guerlain on Central Park South in Manhattan .. it was sublime. In performing her craft she found my neck to be quite stiff, she strongly suggested that I employ the services of one of the staff massage therapists named Jordan. Meanwhile, my friend suggested I become a "member" of A&C which allows for easy payment and some wonderful free perks (I won't go into detail, but you should inquire and consider this opportunity) ... OK .. back to me .. I became a member and enlisted the services of Jordan for a 90 minute deep tissue massage .. full disclosure .. my back is a mess and I sit at a desk 10+ hours a day and am negligent in my stretching. Back to the membership for a moment, I spoke to Paul, one of the principals in the operation who couldn't be more welcoming and engaging. At the onset of our discussion, I understood why my friend had directed me to join and why she sings their praises as I do now. Redirecting you back to my massage .. I met with Jordan, another young professional who has an aura of calm and peacefulness .. I instantly knew that I was in good hands. We discussed my issues and he began to work his magic .. and magic is was! I have been fortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of many a professional massage through the years due to back issues .. but when I tell you that this young man has mad skills .. I speak the absolute truth. I am now looking forward to my fourth scheduled massage with Jordan and each and every time, he listens to my body through touch and tailors his plan of execution on what he intuitively knows to be the best plan of attack for me. Some may call me obsessed, but I have him booked regularly out to February of 2020!! Difficult to find a spa that can execute well on deep tissue massage that hits through musculature without having to visit a clinical sports therapist, but they are both able to deliver a quality spa experience while addressing the needs of clientele that need more than a Swedish massage. read more

I came for a pedicure for my first visit to the new spa. I was prepping for a trip out of town and wanted to treat myself to some down time after a crazy week. It was a quiet afternoon. I had some issues trying to book online, but it was likely because I was trying to find something ASAP. I ended up calling and they thankfully had an open time that day. The spa is in a separate building across the street from the Strathallan hotel. There's a parking lot in front of the entrance. The different spa areas are separated on each floor. You walk into the lobby to check in and they bring you to the floor for your service. I booked the rejuvenating pedicure ($80) which comes with a glass of champagne, cheers to that! This pedicure is a soak, exfoliating scrub, moisturizing mask, plus a paraffin wax, and polish. It was really relaxing and the polish job was good and lasted through my trip and then some. It's also supposed to come with a hand and arm massage. I didn't get that, which was a bummer. Not sure if it was because I was on my phone, but I would have stopped answering emails for that and would have appreciated the ask either way. The space itself is a great option for a group outing if it were for a bridal party or ladies day out. There's a 3 spots for manicures at a table, two seating areas, an OPI nail polish wall, and 4 tubs for pedicures. It's nice that it's a dedicated floor for the nail area. The Strathallen Hotel is my favorite place to stay when I'm in town for business, and I was thrilled when I came last month and saw the new spa across the street! I was able to call and get a last minute massage appointment, and was not disappointed. After checking in, I was taken to the waiting area. It was BEAUTIFUL! Bathroom, sauna, shower, lockers and a beautiful sitting area to make both before and after your treatment more relaxing. The massage rooms are upstairs, so you take an elevator to get there. I so wish I remembered the name of my masseuse because she was incredible! I got a deep tissue massage and enjoyed every minute. I can't wait to come back for more treatments! read more

The best spa experience I have had. The spa is in a beautiful remodeled historic building. I went with a group of 5 women and most of us had the Escape Package (Pedicure, Facial, and Massage). I didn't hear a single complaint from anyone in my party, and I was personally blown away by the quality of the service. Every employee I encountered was friendly, accommodating, and great at their profession. Their attention to detail was astounding, and even though we were a little behind schedule they did not shorten any of our services. Ah a spa close by.. I don't have to travel far and it's quiet and relaxing. I've been here a few times for events but I've never had a service. I finally did the other day I recently received a service on the house due to them picking out a photo I took on Instagram. I was excited and I got to pick a 50 minute service be it mani-pedi-facial.. etc I chose the facial. This was something I was looking forward to since the last time I had facials on the regular was around the time I was getting married and than a pause for a few years and I did it again than I just did masks and etc myself. This place is beautiful, the waiting room I would just love to sit in and cozy up with a book, tea and the fireplace is going. It's calm, white, beige and warm woods, seating is comfortable. Now the thing I found odd was this, ONE: any good spa confirms your appointment I had to call them TWO: why did I not fill out a waver or form they usually want you to do due to what if your taking a drug that may have an interaction or you have some medical issue? I know this was a comped service but I found it off. I go to a well known place here for my pedicures, they confirm appointments and let me know the first time I came to fill out the requisite form. That to be honest was the only misstep about this spa.. I know they are only open about three months but it should be part of the spa practice. Now, I was walked into the waiting room/changing room. It was fabulous you get your own locker, robe and slippers. They show you how to use the lock, thing is after my service I was not told where to put my robe or slippers I just winged it. Now to my service; Vivian came to get me and took me on the elevator upstairs than she had everything set up it just gave me a lovely relaxing feeling I went with my gut and it was just right. We got to talking and I found a kindred spirit. The room was simply laid out, relaxing music was there a light fragrance in the air? The table was warmed, the blankets were fabulous. When Vivian came back in she asked if the were any issues there was none and she got down to business and we did do a little chatting I loved her. As time went on I went to my zen place, she cleansed, toned, steamed, massaged my face, beck, shoulders etc it was lovely. I also got a hand an arm massage. She told me that this was a Facial for Sensitive Skin to be honest the best way to go for a first timer or anyone really. She had told me after we were done my skin is good but I'm slightly congested I have oily skin and it's always a battle! LOL! I asked her what would be good to do next and she wrote her recommendation down and it was at the front desk. Now since that was gratis, I still left a tip you should even comped or not a service is a service!! Oh and oh yea I made an appointment with her again. Cause it was a lovely experience and there was no hard sell and she's been in the business for a long time. If there was a hard sell or push and I felt uncomfortable I would have not bothered with another appointment. Yes facials are not an inexpensive thing but every so often you need a little charge to your skin care regime. The staff is lovely, experienced and relaxed. I called in the morning to see if they had an opening. I was thrilled to get an appointment for a deep tissue massage with Devon that same day! The person who checked me in was extremely welcoming and got me to the day spa quickly. I love the rainfall shower! I have never needed to tell a massage therapist to lighten up before. Devon can adjust the pressure and it is good to know a wide range is available. He also explained and demonstrated exercises that would help me limit muscle issues. It was my first time here. On a whim, I decided to call a few places and they had an opening for a manicure. It was really wonderful to get in immediately. My stylist, Saline was wonderful. She is a skilled manicurist. I enjoyed my time with her. The location is perfect for anyone who works downtown. They are located right in front of the Strathallan hotel. The building itself is beautiful. I was offered a glass of wine, which is always a plus when it comes to luxurious, relaxing experience. I also waited in their special spa room after I was done with the manicure but still wanted to finish my wine. Everyone wanted to make my experience special and I appreciate that. I happened upon this gem of a spa while traveling for work. They were able to quickly accommodate my crazy schedule and set me up with a 90 minute massage. It was the BEST experience I have ever had in a spa!! From the glass of wine when I arrived to the glorious "natural waterfall" shower to finish up the evening, every moment was truly lovely. My fiancé and I got pedicures here. The pedicures were $65 a piece and supposed to be 60 minutes. Ours unfortunately were only 35 minutes and in my opinion not worth $65. They weren't awful and if they were $35 or less I'd be fine with them, but not worth the price in my opinion or my fiancé's. We typically go to a spa for our pedicures and pay $65. We just wanted to try out a new place this time, but definitely will not be going back. The pedicures were also done on a cushioned bench and not the usual pedicures massage chairs. My search ends now, Paul and Aja were so welcoming when I arrived for my cut and color offering me something to drink. Maggie is an all star colorist, we did balayage on my hair- she listened to what I was looking for in color and it came out gorgeous. Ben is wonderful, I have a lot of concerns when it comes to cutting my hair as it is extremely fine and thin. Ben heard me out, and I trusted that he had my best interest at heart. I did not like my experience here at this salon. I did not see anyone in this salon besides one other stylist and a receptionist here during my mid day friday appointment. The male stylist Corey was late. And I felt the consultation was insulting. Corey the stylist told me the haircut I requested was 1990s. Even though this stylist was wearing combat boots which were popular to wear in the 1990's! LOL! So when I changed my mind to a different cut. I was told it was a 2008 cut. My stylist also told me my hair was thick and coarse. I am biracial. Corey needs training how to give a good consultation without offending the client. And he needs to learn how to work with different types of hair. The stylist should offer suggestions and reasons why a haircut would or....would not work. I was sent a text by the salon asking how my experience was between 1 to 5. I rated it a 1. Nobody cared to follow up on my low rating I would never visit Ape and Canary again because my men's haircut was not a $45 dollar haircut. It was a long appointment so I payed the fee and tip so I could get out of the salon without having anymore unpleasantries. I was so happy to leave this negative experience.
