Open Studios is a studio and gallery which sometimes hosts art shows to showcase the work of their artist residents. Basically, the artists open up their studios and work spaces to visitors and we can go in, see the artwork up close, and discuss the art process, media, muses, etc. I would like to give a special mention to the guy at Firefly Press. He invited me and a friend into his studio, showed us all of his amazing turn of the century/mid-century printing equipment, and even let us work one of the printing presses! Definitely a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I will be back for future art showcases.

It's hard to describe, but I just have an enjoyable time walking slowly around this gallery and checking out the art. The place feels like it has a heart. They're featuring local artists right now and have a handout they give you listing their day jobs. I thought it was a cool idea. You know, "That girl who served me those stiff drinks at the Behan painted this? Wow!" That sort of thing. It added something to my experience. They are also hosting musical and other events. Should be fun.

Stopped here at the end of a biking trip and thoroughly enjoyed the free tour. I'd never heard of…read moreDallin or this museum before, and after the visit, I found that fact somewhat appalling. I went in not expecting much and left absolutely amazed. There is so much movement and expressivity in his sculptures. They remind me of early Rodin. In short, this guy created the Paul Revere statue in the North End, the Native American Statue in front of the MFA, and the trumpeting angel of the Mormon church, among others. He could easily be the best American sculptor of the 20th century but, due to political conflict and possibly his own obstinacy/arrogance, he has virtually no legacy. Poor guy, it took him 60 years to erect the Paul Revere statue in the North End and his name isn't even engraved on the pedestal! Boston politicians apparently didn't care for him much at all. He died penniless and all he gets is four rooms in a tiny house in Arlington to showcase his masterpieces. It's a nice little museum though, and the curators are very knowledgeable and dedicated. You can walk through the place on your own, but it's small enough that having a docent guide you through a detailed tour wouldn't take more than 40 minutes. As I said before, everything is free, though donations are greatly appreciated. If you are hosting visitors or just have an hour to kill on a weekend afternoon, this local treasure is well worth the trip.

Once you get over the irony of a white couple curating African art in a predominantly black community, this place is unbelievable. Tim Hamill originally bought this building to open a framing business, but his hobby completely took over the space. Now, the collection is enormous. There's everything from fetishes, to Ethiopean crosses, to masks, to stuff you didn't even know existed. I'm especially fond of these things called Toguna Posts, which are used to prop up meeting houses in some villages in Mali. Their collection of doors is also worth checking out--they're fucking gorgeous. Tim and his wife are incredibly friendly, even if you clearly have no intention of purchasing anything, and they love explaining where everything comes from and the story behind it. So, if you're interested in, y'know, the world around you and shit, you should visit it.

The owners are delightful and as the previous reviewers have stated, their collection is more interesting and nuanced than stuff I've seen in museums. We've purchased several things and we always try to make time for a visit when we are in Boston. But even if you aren't in Boston, they SHIP and have a fantastic website. It is nice and glossy and it effectively removed that creepy unfinished clay like chalkboard feeling. They said it is dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe so excited to get it in rotation! They have a pretty quick turnaround time (3-5 days) and are very generous with their hold times. I embarrassingly will admit it took me a few months to get back to pick them up, and thankfully they still had them waiting in the back. Also, the garage DOES go through to the back of the building where The Painting Place is - so the directions are correct. It was much easier to get there this time when I realized it was a pull-through garage under the building lol.... I will definitely keep The Painting Place on my list for pottery crafts in the future!!

They even had pre-made paint palettes as an option. They also have some pottery pieces and things you can paint and take home the same day, but you can't eat from those items as they don't go thru the kiln. There wasn't a ton of variety in the pottery pieces to choose from, and the prices were a bit high compared to what I've seen in the past. We enjoyed our time. There were only two other parties there so it was very quiet and peaceful. Tip: if you use GPS for directions, it'll point you to the building across from theirs. They're right across from the Russian School. Their sign is a bit hidden. They do have a free parking lot.
