Is a bit pricey, wish it were just a bit cheaper, so I could justify going more often, but they do have special events where they discount the studio fee- like a BYOB ladies night once a month, for example. My daughter and I made a mug and bowl for fathers day, and cost us about $60. Ouch! ( loss of one star for the price factor.) Wet back to pick up a week later, hers was ready, mine was not. (I won't drop a star, since we went on a stormy day, and everyone was making fathers day gifts! So I'm sure it was that they were overloaded with items that weekend!) I would recommend, and would like to go with friends on ladies night sometime soon :-)

The store is stuffed with lovely, one of kind or limited run things that reflect the vision and interests of individual, Massachusetts-based artists--so much more satisfying to browse than a big box store full of mass-produced stuff. The artisan/salesperson who checked me out (she works in paper, making cards and charming wall collages for children) was welcoming and helpful, and my checkout experience in no way resembled the one described by a previous poster. (Frankly, I was a bit taken aback by how indignant that poster got over her frustrating experience--seems she loved the contents of the store, but knocked it THREE stars for inefficient customer service? That seems disproportionate and unfair...)

Open Studios is a studio and gallery which sometimes hosts art shows to showcase the work of their artist residents. Basically, the artists open up their studios and work spaces to visitors and we can go in, see the artwork up close, and discuss the art process, media, muses, etc. I would like to give a special mention to the guy at Firefly Press. He invited me and a friend into his studio, showed us all of his amazing turn of the century/mid-century printing equipment, and even let us work one of the printing presses! Definitely a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I will be back for future art showcases.

spent a couple hours here and really enjoyed the afternoon. the studios are sort of hard to find…read moresince it's tucked away on braintree st, but you can use the giant american flag as a landmark. sculpture, painting, abstract art viewable with tuning forks aids, self portraits, jewelry, soap, and letter press, there was art there for everybody to appreciate. what a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon! i just wish i had endless amounts of money so i could have purchased some of the gorgeous art available.

It is nice and glossy and it effectively removed that creepy unfinished clay like chalkboard feeling. They said it is dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe so excited to get it in rotation! They have a pretty quick turnaround time (3-5 days) and are very generous with their hold times. I embarrassingly will admit it took me a few months to get back to pick them up, and thankfully they still had them waiting in the back. Also, the garage DOES go through to the back of the building where The Painting Place is - so the directions are correct. It was much easier to get there this time when I realized it was a pull-through garage under the building lol.... I will definitely keep The Painting Place on my list for pottery crafts in the future!!

They even had pre-made paint palettes as an option. They also have some pottery pieces and things you can paint and take home the same day, but you can't eat from those items as they don't go thru the kiln. There wasn't a ton of variety in the pottery pieces to choose from, and the prices were a bit high compared to what I've seen in the past. We enjoyed our time. There were only two other parties there so it was very quiet and peaceful. Tip: if you use GPS for directions, it'll point you to the building across from theirs. They're right across from the Russian School. Their sign is a bit hidden. They do have a free parking lot.
