A local yarn store that smells like a bookstore and looks like a place a fictional wizard might live. Digging through the bins and shelves feels like a treasure hunt. I was impressed by their selection of print patterns (not just for knitting and crochet, but all kinds of fiber arts), buttons, and of course, yarn. If you are claustrophobic, stay away. If you like neatly organized cubes of yarn, by color and weight, this is not the place for you. If you have dust allergies, wear a mask. This shop is a riotous, close, packed to the rafters cornucopia...a cacophony of yarn, patterns, books and accessories... I frequent it less and less though, after a few visits where, sifting through the rubble, I came up empty. Sometimes I've gotten very friendly, helpful service here. Sometimes I've left feeling taken for granted, and even a little well, just taken. Take it for what it is... a good resource, but perhaps in need of a good shaking up. This was the only place within 25 miles that sells Kreinik Blending filament, for those of you who are like what?!? It used to make things shiny in items like cross stitch. I called them early on to find out if they carried the stuff and the owner was really sweet on the phone so I was looking forward to the visit. But when I got there I kinda disappointed. While I was there for a specific thing they were very helpful and dug through drawers to find what I was looking for. Very nice. Though when I started wandering around and looking at yarns and asking about prices and stuff I was treated like I was a nuisance and they couldn't wait for me to leave. Unfortunately I only had a big bill with me and they didn't have change (what business doesn't have change?) and the kreinik they had for $4.25 each. What the heck I could of bought this when I went up to New Hamsphire for $2.00. Oh well. Such a sour note to leave on and crowded isn't the word for it, it just seemed like everything was old and stuffed in willy nilly. Sorry crafty people I would find a better place to go, especially if your a Boston Local. read more

This place is a fiber-craft hoarder's dream and a claustrophobic's nightmare. The place probably has not been thoroughly cleaned through or inventoried in years. Yarn is bursting from bins left and right and hanging from the ceiling. Where there isn't yarn, patterns are stuffed in floor-to-ceiling bookcases and are likely older than I am. There are no prices for customers to see prior to purchase. On the one hand, the staff member that helped me was incredibly friendly. On the other, the owner was a bit pushy and did not listen to me at all. The staff member that helped me was incredibly friendly. The woman offered to let me use the store computer, but the owner pushed us away and said she couldn't spare the time. Instead, she urged me to buy a pattern book from them over and over. I decided to buy a few colors I liked for a cowl, but the owner was set on me doing an afghan an tried to get me to buy 15 skeins on yarn. When I told her at the register that I didn't want it all she got short with me. I coincidentally went in on what I discovered was "Super Yarn Sunday", an end-of-season sale of sorts. She kept trying to get me to buy more, because everything "was a super deal." I found the same yarn today online with free shipping and free return. It was still cheaper than Elissa's 20% sale. My mother and I recently opted to shop here after a horrible experience at another shop, and Elissa was like my shining angel with yarn for a halo. We were immediately greeted with a friendly "hello, welcome!" And when I told Elissa the project I wanted to start she immediately went out of her way to help me find the best pattern for me on ravelry and helped me choose a really great inca tweed that I'm really enjoying working with so far. There is such a large & wide selection of yarns, needles, and doll making kits (she apparently was just recently in San Francisco at a crafts fair with her own dolls she made). They also carry this really beautiful and awesome yarn that's hand painted, it's called like HPPYK or something, but the colors are so unique and the quality is really nice. Overall Elissa was super friendly, above and beyond helpful, and my mother and I had a truly wonderful experience there. They also have knitting classes on Thursdays that we will now be attending! Tucked away in an office park, just past the Hemlock Gorge and Echo Bridge. The space is crowded, and a bit overwhelming, although the helpful employees seem to have a great handle on the chaos. Lots and lots of yarn, a good selection of patterns and books, and there's always a few people sitting in and knitting. Prices seem a bit higher than other places I've been, but they are sometimes open on Sundays, which makes them a great resource in a pinch. Call first. I recently visited during a sale ("till the end of May"), and was having trouble deciding on yarn colors. My idea was to take home the first bit of yarn, start knitting it up, and then come back for a complimentary color. When I mentioned this, I was told that the sale was only good for a single purchase...and I have to say that it seemed like they made that part of the rule up on the spot. read more

This is one of my favorite yarn stores EVER. I used to live in Newton, MA, but I moved to California 10 years ago. I still wish I could shop at Elissa's. I go there every time I visit the Boston area (which is not often enough). The owner reads my mind: the last time I was there, I hadn't seen her in 5 years. I walked in, and after hugs and greetings, she pulled a new book off the shelf and said that she had me in mind when she bought it. I had been looking for that very book! Ok, ok, ok. Yes, the place looks like what I imagine the inside of my head looks like, crazy with tons of yarn everywhere. Yes, they have yarn high up and hanging everywhere. But, they have discount bins, they have books, they have knitting bags, they have patterns, and all in one small area. I do wish it looked less like a warehouse for the regular yarn shop prices you pay, but Elissa is so warm, so friendly (never been cranky to me!) that I go back to her for the yarn I can't find elsewhere. She helps with patterns and stitches, and offers yarn substitutions and colorways. This is my first stop on a yarn hunt. Love it! read more

There are no prices on the yarn for the customer to see prior to purchase. The owner refers to her binder for prices. She charged me over list price on everything I purchased. I knew this at the time of the purchase, but needed the colors and didn't say anything. She also manipulated the numbers for a project I was working on with substitute yarn so that I would need to buy more yarn from her. I felt taken. I found this shop a few years ago when I was looking for a felted toy kit (KuKu). My first visit was a welcoming experience. The owner is so sweet. She answered my questions, took my order and then I just browsed. One of the ladies knitting at the table, told me to go get my yarn and have a seat and knit a while. I've been in the Boston area for a few years now and still considered my LYS to be located in my home state - - no longer, Elissa's is now my LYS. Whenever I walk through the doors, I am warmly welcomed and today I got hugs. I went to this store with a specific project in mind (a baby blanket). When I walked in I was immediately greeted and welcomed. I showed them my pattern and then was shown so many choices of yarn! I really thought I would just have to choose pink and go! But so many pinks, so many variegated yarns. I was not pressured into anything, it was even suggested that I take them to the window to see them in natural light. After choosing a color I was offered a seat at the knitting table to knit a swatch. The owner asked me " Are you having fun?" many knitters came in after me, some looking for new projects, others seeking help, and others showing finished projects. I left feeling very happy with my choice and I'm leo excited to be working on this blanket. I would definitely go back to this store because of the service and selection. read more

If you enjoy garage sales and poking around dilapidated shops, this could be appealing to you. If you want fresh, crisp merchandise, clearly organized and priced, stay away. I went button shopping there yesterday and was horrified at the stale stock and general disorder, but it's been that way for years. However, they do have an excellent button selection, so I forced myself to venture in again. This visit, the thing that really stuck in my craw was that shelf after shelf had small signs that read: "On Sale", or ""50% Off." I chose an old skein of orange yarn from one of these shelves and when I went to pay was told, "Oh no, that's not on sale." Oh really? Then what do the signs mean? And why don't you mark down old skeins missing ball bands, etc? Yarn hoarding? Turned off for good! read more

Elissa sold me close to $100 worth of yarn and supplies for a project that she insisted that I'd be able to do as a beginner and I have struggled with it, needing to go back there for help several times. I Love this place! Its cozy, friendly and packed full of yarn!!! There's so much to dig through and look at that I always leave with more than I came in for. And everyone is so helpful. They can get busy, so you may have to wait your turn, but when it's your turn you get undivided attention. The owner is so sweet and knowledgeable, and the place itself is very homey. Elissa's is located close to where I live but I've had pretty bad experiences there. I went in one time looking for bulky yarn for a pattern and the employee tried to sell me a much lighter weight yarn, telling me that it would work-- no way. I've called to ask if they carried a specific brand, been assured that they did, only to go in and be told no, they never carry it, but could order it (with an unknown delivery date). The final straw was finding something in the sale bin and when it was priced, was told it was the full price. So why have it in the sale bin? It certainly looked shopworn. They do carry the needles that I like and I purchased them, albeit for 30% more than the store I usually patronize. read more

I've been knitting for years and been to many yarn shops. Not many are around that offer what Lissa does..I can bring in a sweater I've bought and she can replicate the pattern. It IS crazy there so when I go, I plan on a lot of time but it's worth it. I find Lissa warm and friendly. I hadn't been in for a bit and when I came in, she actually remembered me.
