I had pieces of fabric with sentimental value that he had pieced together for this project. I am about to hire George to come back and do my guest room and some reupholstery work for me. I was shocked to see some less-than-perfect reviews for Gallery 33. George has done a ton of work for me over the years, all has been top quality! Drapes in my living room, front room, daughter's room, and the master bedroom. Roman shades in our office and family room, and customer shades in our kitchen. He also recovered my dining room chairs in beautiful Moore & Giles leather . This is probably the worst upholstery shop ever. We took out vintage chair here to be reupholstered. What a disaster and disappointment it was. He charged us $1,500 to redo this chair. When we brought it in, it was the most comfortable chair in our household. When we picked it up it looked nice but was completely wrapped up (first warning sign!!). I brought the chair home and placed it in our living room. I unwrapped it and was so excited to sit down in it. I was shocked to feel a spring poking me in the buttocks and that you now site lopsided in the chair. I spoke with George who said to bring it back and he would look at it. After a couple of days I called George who just gave me excuses and said he "just changed the upholstery material" and "didn't change a thing." He then changed his story to tell me he upgraded the foam and fixed the springs. I had my wife go it to deal with him and when she came in with our neighbor (who was also looking to have a chair reupholstered) George started yelling at my wife. The final result is we paid $1,500 to have our chair ruined. If you sit in the chair for more than 5 minutes your buttocks hurts. The only guarantee is that you will not be happy. George does not stand behind his work and lies! Beware!!!! DO NOT USE THIS PLACE!!!!!! read more

I can't speak to why other reviewers had such a bad experience. I will say that while not the most friendly of stores, they weren't rude to us and let us wander around for a bit on our own, which is what we prefer anyways. Personality wise they just aren't touchy feely in your face people, so its better to be true to who you are than to be a fake salesman that you can see right through. We were looking for Hunter Douglas window dressings and got ourselves a quote. It was higher than our other quotes, which is why we didn't go with Gallery 33. But to also answer the reviews saying it is overpriced, I have to say that it wasn't out of line with how much this stuff is supposed to cost. Window dressings and the like are overpriced to begin with, but there is always room for negotiation. read more

They did a wonderful job for us re-upholstering a set of dining room chairs. They worked within our budget constraints by finding a reduced-price fabric remnant that met our needs beautifully. This is followup from my husbands review. The worst part was I truly enjoyed working with Lauri. She was kind and patient with me as this was a first for me. George was too after he said she was on a two week vacation but then I never saw her again. From the very beginning I told them over and over how comfort was so important as these are daily used chairs in our living room with three children and us. Again when we finalized fabric choice reminded George the need for comfort. He was so nice and understanding. After a few weeks of my husband trying to work with him and George promising to fix the problem I took my girlfriend in who is familiar with reupholstering. We were both pleasant and stated it just needs a little more foam. He got really defensive at first and I got a bit nervous. I stated I understand what your saying, but that doesn't correct the problem and I feel we spent a lot of money here. With that, George screamed at me "your not going to argue with me". Worst customer service ever! I went into this store for the first time looking for fabric for couch pillows. I was looking through the fabric books and taking notes on the fabrics that I liked so I could remember them. The owner comes over and tells me that he is not a public library. He then proceeded to suggest that I would take the fabric info and go somewhere else to buy it cheaper. Really? This is how you get new customers? What about ever offering to help me instead of accusing me. So crazy. I really don't see how this store is still in business with that kind of treatment of customers. George and his staff members are helpful, friendly and professional. They reupholstered a treasured family heirloom, a Victorian couch I recently inherited. The choices of fabric were wonderful. There were so many gorgeous fabrics to choose from that I had to visit the shop three times before I could make a final decision about what I wanted. Before visiting Gallery 33, I had contacted three local competitors for estimates. George's price was considerably lower than the others workmanship on the couch is excellent. I needed valance clips for my hunter douglas blinds. Went to other blind stores in san mateo and was told to order the clips on line. At Gallery 33, the sales man was very helpful. He took the time to search his boxes of spare parts and was able to come up with the clips we needed. Even though it was a small sale, he treated us as if we were long time customers. Got blinds here. Repeatedly spoke down to me on the phone. Delivered broken/incomplete blinds twice. In the end not even sure we got what we ordered (far more light comes through than 'just above blackout' as we discussed) but we will deal with it. I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more
