I honestly can't believe I've never left a review for Galen's. I guess it's just because it's been a fixture in my family's dining rotation for so long that the thought never occurred to me. Sadly, we actually hadn't been to Galen's in a very long time -- not sure why, probably some combination of pandemic + busy, but I'm happy to say I remedied that situation with my mom yesterday on our weekly lunch together! And it was every bit as good -- perhaps better -- as I remember it being. The interior is kinda cute kitschy southern / fish shack chic. It's a medium size restaurant that provides table service, though you take your ticket to the register to pay. Service is generally efficient and friendly. This time, I thought our waitress was particularly good. I think her name was Kristen, but I'm not sure. This restaurant is no frills, country cooking. It's popular with the locals and usually does good business at least for breakfast and lunch, which is when we tend to visit. They have traditional breakfasts, plate lunches, and barbeque. Never had the bbq but they have a smoker out back that's usually pumping out good smells. I'm always just too drawn in by the plate lunches. They have different specials each day of the week. You can opt for one of your sides to be replaced with the dessert of the day, which is always nice. My family and I have tried a lot of the food here and I honestly don't think we've had a bad meal. Our go-to's are the vegetable plate, chicken and dressing when they have it, and the chicken tender dinner. Chicken and dumplings are good too. For sides, we like their broccoli (lots of butter and garlic), their vegetable medley (which sounds like it wouldn't be that exciting but is actually exceptional), coleslaw (you've got your choice of mayo or vinegar-based -- my mom LOVES their mayo based with poppyseeds like her mom used to make :D), and what gets my vote for best fried okra in town. Don't forget to ask for ranch for dipping if you get chicken tenders or fries; it's homemade and super creamy. Their dessert of the day is usually some kind of cobbler. I like the chocolate cobbler: warm chocolate pudding and pie crust. Yum. At breakfast, the eggs, bacon, biscuits, hash browns, and pancakes are all consistently made well. A one-off visit here may only earn 4 stars, but after many, many visits over the years, the consistently solid food and quick service has solidified this as one of our regular favorites. Delicious southern cooked meals are served here. From the outside the place, it looks unassuming and humble. My wife and I went for lunch and had a great tilapia cooked and seasoned in a delicious southern way. I had a real good chicken fried steak with white gravy with pepper. Our sides were a delicious sautéed vegetables, some outstanding hush puppies with a very good flavor. And I wasn't super familiar with hush puppies, but we both enjoyed them immensely. We also enjoyed some fried okra, and some outstanding famous fried green tomatoes. For the salad, we had an outstandingly delicious home made ranch dressing, and we also sampled their Italian dressing which was equally as good. We even concluded with the homemade peach cobbler portion which was very good although, each family tends to make their peach cobbler a little differently, but this one was very good we thought, depending on the style of peach cobbler you enjoy. Come and sample and enjoy and see what you think. You can hit and miss sometimes on items but overall I'm happy. The restaurant is small, quaint with that old fashioned hometown feel. Thoroughly enjoyed the fried catfish, and the fried okra. Don't forget the scrumptious strawberry cobbler. I must be an idiot for never going here in five years. Went for the first time yesterday and it was really good. Wife had the grill chicken breast, pinto beans, salad, and green beans. Chicken was cooked to perfection and extremely tender and juicy. Vegetable were outstanding. I had the pork loin, okra, pinto beans, and grilled squash. All I can say is it was extremely good. I am ready to go back and try one of their steaks or burgers. Saw a burger and it looked great as well as their steaks. People in Huntsville get ready when they open at the old Mullins location. You will be in for a treat. I also have to say the service is great and very attentive. Ok now had the burgers and they were the best I ever had. Good spot for a country breakfast. Huge portions for a small price. Their omelets are very good and can be customized however you'd like for $.50/ingredient. That's about the only way to somewhat eat a healthy breakfast here though. I'd like to see more lighter options. Also, while we were there they were super busy and ran out of coffee cups. We were served coffee in styrofoam cups. The tables weren't the cleanest. It was very cheap diner feeling, which is what we signed up for going in anyway. I really don't understand the hype of this place. The parking lot is always full but I honestly don't see why. We went for my daughter's birthday and for the six of us (4 adult meals and two kid meals) it was over $80 before tip for subpar food. The salad was literally just chunks of lettuce with a tomato slice on it, the cornbread was inedible and the rest of the food tasted frozen or canned. The only good thing was the bbq; maybe they should put as much effort into the rest of the food. The service was pretty bad as well, our waitress disappeared after taking our order and we never got refills and had to flag down another sever just to get our check. It's very small and cramped inside with kitschy, "country" decor. Save your money if you're looking for authentic country cooking because this isn't it. read more

Dropped in as I was passing through to Huntsville. Not my typical go-to style restaurant, but food was really good and staff was attentive and approachable. Had the catfish and broccoli and it was delicious(some of the other sides were more typical of right-out-the-bag packaged food.) Definitely better than I was expecting. Decor-wise, it's a more what you'd expect from a local country restaurant. Random decorations, some clutter, and some bizarre setups, like the bar where employee drinks are sitting out on. Staff made sure I was taken care of and were friendly but also hardworking. I was greeted by several different staff and multiple offered to clear anything for me. We went to Galen's tonight and they are not using masks and they are not sanitizing their tables. We are senior citizens and we went in wearing masks. They didn't even bother to put on a mask when they took our order or when they delivered our food. Finally decided to try this restaurant. It was certainly worth the money and the food was delicious. Considerable portions for money compared to other breakfast places. Customer service was awesome. My favorite restaurant in the Huntsville area, so far Unlike a place on the 'row' by the courthouse, there is no pretension here and there is value for the food. Service is down home friendly and the lunch meat-and-three food is very good. The hushpuppies and cornbread make me smile. Fried okra is done right. Covid restrictions are handled well.
