We love the food and the staff. Lots of food for the price. My wife had the spaghetti special and loved it. The fried catfish is really good as well. We like the simple ambience of the restaurant. Try Galen's out, you'll be glad you did. read more

We had cheese burgers with onions rings and fried okra. Food was delicious and the service was excellent!

Best fried catfish dinner ever. Perfectly cooked with fires and Cole slaw. Truly a hidden gem of the south.

Delicious hush puppies, ribeye, mac and cheese! Awesome customer service. Clean and peaceful atmosphere. Grateful for a great dining experience. read more

Our kids own a business in NEW HOPE and we drop by Galens all the time. Love veggies, catfish and everything else we get there. Service is great and feels like mostly locals who know each other including law enforcement which in my opinion is a good sign. Feel like they appreciate your business and always enjoy food, service and folks taking the time to eat here. Recommend. read more

Always good food and service. The staff is always friendly and hospitable. A good hometown place to eat

Just a meat and three on the way to guntersville from Huntsville. Nothing fancy. Hole in the wall. Been there for years. Just good home cooking at a reasonable price. They have daily specials for $10. More than enough food but not ridiculously hugh. Waitress was really nice and attentive. read more

I honestly can't believe I've never left a review for Galen's. I guess it's just because it's been a fixture in my family's dining rotation for so long that the thought never occurred to me. Sadly, we actually hadn't been to Galen's in a very long time -- not sure why, probably some combination of pandemic + busy, but I'm happy to say I remedied that situation with my mom yesterday on our weekly lunch together! And it was every bit as good -- perhaps better -- as I remember it being. The interior is kinda cute kitschy southern / fish shack chic. It's a medium size restaurant that provides table service, though you take your ticket to the register to pay. Service is generally efficient and friendly. This time, I thought our waitress was particularly good. I think her name was Kristen, but I'm not sure. This restaurant is no frills, country cooking. It's popular with the locals and usually does good business at least for breakfast and lunch, which is when we tend to visit. They have traditional breakfasts, plate lunches, and barbeque. Never had the bbq but they have a smoker out back that's usually pumping out good smells. I'm always just too drawn in by the plate lunches. They have different specials each day of the week. You can opt for one of your sides to be replaced with the dessert of the day, which is always nice. My family and I have tried a lot of the food here and I honestly don't think we've had a bad meal. Our go-to's are the vegetable plate, chicken and dressing when they have it, and the chicken tender dinner. Chicken and dumplings are good too. For sides, we like their broccoli (lots of butter and garlic), their vegetable medley (which sounds like it wouldn't be that exciting but is actually exceptional), coleslaw (you've got your choice of mayo or vinegar-based -- my mom LOVES their mayo based with poppyseeds like her mom used to make :D), and what gets my vote for best fried okra in town. Don't forget to ask for ranch for dipping if you get chicken tenders or fries; it's homemade and super creamy. Their dessert of the day is usually some kind of cobbler. I like the chocolate cobbler: warm chocolate pudding and pie crust. Yum. At breakfast, the eggs, bacon, biscuits, hash browns, and pancakes are all consistently made well. A one-off visit here may only earn 4 stars, but after many, many visits over the years, the consistently solid food and quick service has solidified this as one of our regular favorites. Give them a try if you're in the area. read more

Galen's Restaurant - Chicken tender dinner with broccoli, French fries, and a roll - New American Near Me - New Hope, Alabama

The food was reasonably priced and very good. The BLT was great! Nothing fancy, just good food and service.

The Burger Man used to eat there a long time ago, and today my wife and I decided to stop by and have lunch. We both got the Cajun Turkey Club Samich, and they are awesome. Fresh toppings, great-tasting turkey, and grilled sourdough bread. My wife got the tater logs, and I got the onion rings and they were good as well. So if you are looking for a great samich, you have to go to Galen's in New Hope, AL read more

Exactly what you'd expect in the south. Good atmosphere - good food - good price - everyone friendly - no frills.

Delicious southern cooked meals are served here. From the outside the place, it looks unassuming and humble. My wife and I went for lunch and had a great tilapia cooked and seasoned in a delicious southern way. I had a real good chicken fried steak with white gravy with pepper. Our sides were a delicious sautéed vegetables, some outstanding hush puppies with a very good flavor. And I wasn't super familiar with hush puppies, but we both enjoyed them immensely. We also enjoyed some fried okra, and some outstanding famous fried green tomatoes. For the salad, we had an outstandingly delicious home made ranch dressing, and we also sampled their Italian dressing which was equally as good. We even concluded with the homemade peach cobbler portion which was very good although, each family tends to make their peach cobbler a little differently, but this one was very good we thought, depending on the style of peach cobbler you enjoy. Come and sample and enjoy and see what you think. You can hit and miss sometimes on items but overall I'm happy. These items were the star of the show, to me: - Hush puppies -Cream corn -Grilled tilapia -Fried green tomatoes -vinegar slaw I haven't had breakfast here so I don't know what the score is, but maybe you should try it? They're open for breakfast and lunch And closed on Mondays. read more

Friendly people, great service and good food! I was expecting a more modern look but I guess the building and decor fits the rural atmosphere. Anyway, the catfish here is very good...fried to perfection: crispy and golden brown. I was welcomed to dine in but I was on a mission and chose to take out. I gave this restaurant 4 stars because if it was not for the photo (that I was not able to upload ), I wouldn't remember my two side dishes. read more

The restaurant is small, quaint with that old fashioned hometown feel. Thoroughly enjoyed the fried catfish, and the fried okra. Don't forget the scrumptious strawberry cobbler. Our waiter was very thorough and kept coming back refilling our glasses and asking if we needed anything. The service and the food were great. We will be back! read more

It's kind of a funky little place, but the food and the service were excellent. Not too many diners like this one are still around.

Just one of those great, small places you usually pass when you drive by - and shouldn't. Amazingly friendly staff, good food that was very reasonable. Everyone we came with raved about their pancakes, and I had the biscuits and gravy. It was very good also. It helped that we were all a bit hungover - and everything had just the right amount of grease :) read more

Super great staff. Most the food is good but the staff more than makes up for anything else. Friendly, family-run business...when you arrive, you become part of their family read more

I always have experienced good service and good food. Very consistent. I especially love their breakfast.

Excellent service. The wait staff is attentive to the customers and treats the guests like old friends!

Food & service are always very good! I eat here whenever I'm in the area. Chicken & dumplings are very good! The servings are plentiful. I usually go for lunch but often get a second plate to take home for that evening's dinner. read more

The manager JESSICA needs to be fired asap. She is extremely rude. She obviously does not treat her employees well. Any time i come to galen's it seems like she is in a bad mood, if her being pregnant is putting her in a bad mood to where she treats customers and workers with disrespect. MAYBE she should not work there. read more

I like this place a lot. I just don't go out to eat much.Service is good. Seems to be a clean place to eat at.

I must be an idiot for never going here in five years. Went for the first time yesterday and it was really good. Wife had the grill chicken breast, pinto beans, salad, and green beans. Chicken was cooked to perfection and extremely tender and juicy. Vegetable were outstanding. I had the pork loin, okra, pinto beans, and grilled squash. All I can say is it was extremely good. I am ready to go back and try one of their steaks or burgers. Saw a burger and it looked great as well as their steaks. People in Huntsville get ready when they open at the old Mullins location. You will be in for a treat. I also have to say the service is great and very attentive. Ok now had the burgers and they were the best I ever had. Onion rings are great as well as the crinkle cup fries. I want to try their steaks as well. Great country place for all. read more

Good spot for a country breakfast. Huge portions for a small price. Their omelets are very good and can be customized however you'd like for $.50/ingredient. That's about the only way to somewhat eat a healthy breakfast here though. I'd like to see more lighter options. Also, while we were there they were super busy and ran out of coffee cups. We were served coffee in styrofoam cups. The tables weren't the cleanest. It was very cheap diner feeling, which is what we signed up for going in anyway. Overall, it was good and cheap, and I'd go back again. read more

Excellent southern comfort food. Had the chicken and dumplings, awesome. BEST peach cobbler I have EVER had. Can't wait to try breakfast there. read more

Excellent service. Really good homestyle food. We go there every time we are in Alabama.

The presentation could use work, however the atmosphere, environment, and taste of the food speaks for itself. Great place to stop and eat if you're in a rush or just looking for southern hospitality. Feels like one of very few southern spots left. Love it read more

Down home cooking at it's best!!! For years I've past this restaurant on US Hwy 431 just south of Huntsville. I had to go by there today, but this time I stopped. What have I been missing? The Ribs are literally falling off of the bone. The hamburger tastes like something you should have to go back in time for. When this place says small plates big see that's just what they mean. I give Gaylen's an awesome five star rating!!! We will be back. read more

Galen's Restaurant - Apple Cobler at it's best!!! - New American Near Me - New Hope, Alabama

I really don't understand the hype of this place. The parking lot is always full but I honestly don't see why. We went for my daughter's birthday and for the six of us (4 adult meals and two kid meals) it was over $80 before tip for subpar food. The salad was literally just chunks of lettuce with a tomato slice on it, the cornbread was inedible and the rest of the food tasted frozen or canned. The only good thing was the bbq; maybe they should put as much effort into the rest of the food. The service was pretty bad as well, our waitress disappeared after taking our order and we never got refills and had to flag down another sever just to get our check. It's very small and cramped inside with kitschy, "country" decor. Save your money if you're looking for authentic country cooking because this isn't it. read more

Lowering to 4 stars, as service and quality of food has dropped the past couple years.

Ok, basically a meat and three. Decor, was fine, very down home and strong about fishing. Service, greeted at the door and seated ourselves. Service throughout the meal was just right. Food, food was good and plentiful. For $12 I had more catfish than any three people should eat! Wife said her French fried were cold but everything else was fine. Overall, should do well as a local restaurant. read more

Dropped in as I was passing through to Huntsville. Not my typical go-to style restaurant, but food was really good and staff was attentive and approachable. Had the catfish and broccoli and it was delicious(some of the other sides were more typical of right-out-the-bag packaged food.) Definitely better than I was expecting. Decor-wise, it's a more what you'd expect from a local country restaurant. Random decorations, some clutter, and some bizarre setups, like the bar where employee drinks are sitting out on. Staff made sure I was taken care of and were friendly but also hardworking. I was greeted by several different staff and multiple offered to clear anything for me. All in all, very pleasant experience and would eat here again. read more

We went to Galen's tonight and they are not using masks and they are not sanitizing their tables. We are senior citizens and we went in wearing masks. They didn't even bother to put on a mask when they took our order or when they delivered our food. Even though the food is good, we will not be going back since they don't care about our health. read more

Finally decided to try this restaurant. It was certainly worth the money and the food was delicious. Considerable portions for money compared to other breakfast places. Customer service was awesome. Got our food quickly and hot. Only recommendation was the sausage patty was a little bit on the dry over cooked side. Fix that and it will be 5 stars. read more
