Where do I start here? Me and 3 other people came here because they were one of a few restaurants close by that didn't close at 8 or 9pm. First the waitress was acting as if she didn't want to be there and its like hey I get it. I have 10+ years of experience in the food industry plus a Culinary Arts School graduate, I understand but don't take it out on us. I asked her (because I dont drink soda) where there any no soda drinks like juices or something i could get. I asked for lemonade and she told me it was carbonated. My friend ordered it and guess what it wasn't carbonated. The atmosphere was kind of dull and dingy like it was stuck in a time period in a grandpas man cave in a basement. Oh to add to that we are pretty sure we saw the manager or owner either drive home drunk or was physically ill. He did not look good and should not have gotten behind the wheel. Now for the food. My one friend ordered a Ruben and said whatever the sauce was on the sandwich was extremely sweet! My other friend had the catfish plate nothing was seasoned and the cornbread was dry and falling apart. A buddy of mine ordered wings and the wings were not seasoned and were barely sauced. He also ordered the country fried steak and gravy meal. Once again nothing was seasoned and the mashed potatoes were instant potatoes. I ordered the chicken tenders for an appetizer and these things were as big as my pinky super floppy no crisp at all and guess what not seasoned. My main course was the bbq bacon burger and you could instantly tell the burger was a super prossed frozen patty also not seasoned and the bacon was not crispy and had no flavor. I didn't even know it was there. This was not a good experience and we will not return. 4 people and nothing was good is crazy to think but its true. After arriving in Huntsville from Memphis, Diane and I stepped in here for a late-night dinner. We enjoyed fine Fried Cheese Curds that were clearly oozing out cheese; then a cup-sized crock of excellent French Onion Soup and a tasty French Dip with added sauteed Onions that was accompanied by Sweet Potato Fries for me; and welcome Boom-Boom Shrimp (basically Fried Shrimp) and French Fries for Diane. The ambiance was classic woodsy pub, and service by our harried waitress, who had to serve numerous tables and clean the floor as well, was good, all things considered. If ever back in Huntsville and craving comfort food, I would not hesitate to eat here again. XXXX-1/2 stars overall! read more

I rarely leave reviews but I feel inclined. Stopped in here and sat at the bar for a late dinner and a couple drinks on a work trip by myself. Ordered the 16oz ribeye medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. Salted just the right amount. Didn't add anything to it. Got a plain baked potato because I can't do dairy. Even that was good without adding anything. It had moisture. Wasn't all dried out. Steamed broccoli was cooked just right, not half blanched and mostly raw like a lot of other places, not mushy. Bar staff were attentive and pleasant. Chill place. Good folks. Our second time here. Great food and cocktails. Service was very good. We sat out on their covered patio to the left of the front door on a cold evening in January--temps in the low 40's. I had not been to West End Grill in years so I decided to stop by. I noticed that the bar area was super packed... like there were no empty seats, so not sure if WEG had happy hour specials that I wasn't aware of or not, but they definitely seemed like they were having a good time at that bar. The restaurant itself is not big. It sits in a slightly older plaza (we saw some of the brick columns outside that needed to be badly repaired). There were quite a few patrons in the restaurant, but not super packed. It took our host awhile to seat us for some odd reason (I could tell he may have had a day). Once we were seated, it also took awhile for our waitress to greet us, so WEG may be short staffed. I then ordered the Canjun pasta with shrimp and chicken and it was just decent. It was swimming in sauce. Now I like pasta to be somewhat "saucy," but that was simply too much. The pasta also lacked flavor so I had to really season it up with some salt and pepper. We hosted an 80th birthday party at West End Grill. They have the perfect room for our crowd of 30 guests. We ordered rounds of appetizers, tea and water and we had Krissy (?sp) that took drink orders and waited on our every need. Dominique helped with our setup of cake table, host table etc plus the tech help to have our slideshow hook up to the TV. They were so accommodating and attentive. We totally appreciate their hospitality. The foods is always delicious here and the location is perfect along with a big parking lot. I was traveling for business. The food was good, the establishment was clean, and the locals were friendly. Most of the staff were professional and courteous. However, I did have an uncomfortable interaction with the hostess who was working last Wednesday, February 4th. I also observed her engaging in similar personal conversations with several male guests who were there for trivia night. She initiated conversations with me that went beyond what I would consider appropriate in a professional setting, provided her phone number, and made comments and suggestions that made me uncomfortable--despite my telling her that I am in a long‑term relationship. Because of this experience, I'm unsure if I would return, particularly when traveling alone, even though the rest of the visit was positive. read more

I've been wanting to try WEG for a very long time. It's always been one of those places where I seem to make plans to go, and then something comes up or changes and I wind up not being able to make it. At last, I had an opportunity to grab carryout this week on Wednesday. I ordered online by following a link I found from a Google search. It was pretty easy to do and I had no trouble making small additions to my order. It says there's no additional charge to order online, so I guess their prices have just changed. Their menu on their website says the item I ordered is about $8.50, but I paid about $12.50 for it. At any rate, I've heard for years now that "Zach's tot roast" is legendary. It's tater tots covered in pot roast and gravy. The concept reminds me a bit of poutine. I figured I had to try that. I ordered the smaller portion and a sweet tea. The inside of the restaurant is kind of nice; it reminds me of a Ruby Tuesday with a slightly stronger bar vibe (think dimly lit). There's a large fish tank with lots of pretty fish inside. That's unique and kind of fun. When I arrived, the hostess instructed me to head to the bar and ask the bartender for my order. No problem. There was one person ahead of me and the bartender was fairly busy, so I browsed on my phone while I waited. One of the wait staff knocked into my shoulder while I was standing there waiting. I feel bad for not being more aware of my surroundings and getting out of the way, but at the same time, a simple excuse me would've gotten me to move quite easily, or at least would have soothed my annoyance if they'd apologized after bumping into me, but I got neither. Regardless, after that, my food was delivered to me without much of a hitch. I got in my car and drove back to work to eat, only to discover no napkins and no utensils in my to go bag. Luckily, I keep extra napkins in my glove box. Very helpful when you're trying to eat gravy covered tater tots with your fingers. Overall, the tot roast was...okay. Like other reviewers mentioned, it's pretty salty, but I kind of expected that based on the ingredients. I paid an extra 60 something cents to add sour cream on the side and wish I hadn't; I don't think it added much and I actually liked it better without. I thought the tots were cooked very nicely (super crispy, not weird and oily as they are sometimes) and mostly avoided severe sogginess except for the ones at the very bottom of the pile. The gravy was flavorful. I don't really know how to rate the pot roast because frankly I don't eat it that often and so I don't have much to compare it to. It seemed decent? Very very tender. I appreciated the surprise dinner roll thrown in with the tot roast. It was good. I didn't dislike this meal, but honestly it would probably be more enjoyed by someone who likes pot roast more than me, lol. I'd come back and give them another go with a different dish. WEG has been a local favorite for a long time and that's probably not without reason. read more

This is a family-run business and shows up on most Yelp searches for everything from Seafood to Steak. The food was excellent, and the staff was super friendly. I met friends from Tuscaloosa this past week at West End Grill. My friend, Cynthia, has been talking about Zack's Tot Roast ever since she tried it last year. We were seated quickly and menus and drinks came out fast. Cynthia ordered Zack's Tot Roast and so did my husband. Ron ordered a Turkey sandwich with rice pilaf as his side. I decided on pot roast with green beans and a side salad. After 20 minutes our orders came out. Ron's turkey sandwich was ok. It didn't look bad and it didn't look great. He said it was ok and so was the rice pilaf. My pot roast was good. The green beans were salty which is normal but these were a "little more" if that makes sense. Maybe due to the amount of ham put in the green beans. My salad was good. The Zack's Tot Roast was meh. The crispy tater tots were soggy. The cook failed to cook the tater tots crispy. The color wasn't a dark tan like the last time all of us sampled the dish so two out of four of us weren't overly happy. It was a shame the tots weren't crispy. The crispy crunch last time was memorable enough for Cynthia and hubs to order the dish again. We will go back again and pick another dish or specifically ask the tots be fried crispy as the menu says. read more

Cool little local dive. Came with some friends on a Monday night to eat and play Singo. We had a blast. Sat in the bar area and service was great. The Singo was fun. Kinda like Bingo but they play songs and you have a bingo card with songs listed. Pretty cool concept and a lot of fun especially since tonight was 80's rock songs. We had the Zack's Tot Roast since we have heard so much about it and it did not disappoint. Tater tots covered with pot roast, gravy and cheese. Our friends invited us here as it's one of their staples. They usually sit at the bar, but we sat at a table. Staff was attentive. Food was good. I wish they had healthier options with grilled shrimp as they do with grilled chicken, but they have an extensive menu. You can substitute a veggie burger for the burgers & they serve the lunch menu even on the weekends. They had a nice outdoor area to eat on nice days. FYI: The parking lot needs attention as there are HUGE potholes, but that's the property owner's fault. Just be careful so you don't pop a tire or bend a rim! read more

We had read reviews on West End Grill and have been looking for a new place to grab brunch after church...so we decided to check it out. The food was pretty good and the staff members were very accommodating. We sat in the dining area off to the left, but we got sat next to the door that leads to the patio. I think that our table location probably had a lot to do with our overall dining experience being lower than we had anticipated. You see, a family of four doesn't want to go eat brunch and watch patrons sit outside and smoke while we were trying to enjoy brunch after church. And, it was COLD, and by cold, I mean sub-arctic cold (for Alabama anyway). We watched 2 diners make three separate trips outside for a smoke break. It was pretty disgusting to watch while trying to enjoy a meal, and it was not ideal. I felt like I needed to take a shower immediately after we got home. Unfortunately, smoking is the primary image that we will remain in our minds when we think about West End Grill...and for that reason, we will not return. read more

Shrimp was not overcooked which I appreciated & the fish was moist. Things that could've been better; my Cajun pasta had a creamy sauce but it was kinda bland, the Caesar dressing was very light & didn't taste like Caesar to me.( I wish the soup had been hotter).
