My final work travel stop this week wrapped up with a mighty fine meal at Prohibition Rooftop Bar & Grill in Madison, Alabama. The restaurant sits just a stone's throw from the ballpark where the Rocket City Trash Pandas play, so the whole place already has a fun, lively atmosphere before you even sit down. Now given the name "Prohibition," I half expected someone to knock on the door and ask for a secret password like it was 1927. Back in those days, enjoying a drink required secrecy, dim lights, and maybe a jazz band playing in the corner. Today, things are a little easier... though for this non-drinker, my order was simple: water on the rocks, hold the lemon. I prefer my water about 100 proof for maximum flavor. My boss and coworker grabbed seats at the bar while we looked over the menu. We kicked things off with the Pork Belly Burnt Ends and the Pork Bao Buns. Let me tell you, those Pork Belly Burnt Ends were an absolute masterpiece. They came out crisp and seasoned just right with a little spicy kick. Served with raw carrots, homemade pickles, and lettuce wraps to bundle those little jewels together--downright tasty. If food had a Hall of Fame, these would already have a plaque on the wall. The Pork Bao Buns were good as well, but they simply couldn't match the grand slam the Pork Belly Burnt Ends delivered. For my main course, I ordered the Smoked Wangs with the Jala Mango seasoning and a side salad. The wings were delicious--cooked and seasoned to perfection. Every bite was solid. No bootlegging required. Prohibition definitely hit it out of the park today. Between the great food, the great service, and the fun atmosphere near the ballpark, this place is a must-stop for locals or anyone just passing through Madison. Our waitress tried pretty hard to convince us to order dessert, so I'm guessing their sweets are just as flavorful as everything else on the menu. The only problem I had today? I couldn't finish my meal. I was absolutely stuffed. If this had been the 1920s, the only crime committed here would've been leaving food on the plate. Great food. Great service. I'll gladly return--though next time I may need a little more room in the stomach. read more

I went to Prohibition for lunch with a group. We were greeted and given a table right away. We sat downstairs but there's a second floor/rooftop dining area as well. It's a trendy looking place with good service and a "fancy" take on some traditional menu items. I found out they had a brunch menu in addition to the lunch options. I went with the breakfast sandwich that came with sweet potato tots. Originally they brought out their other potatoes/fries but corrected it right away. It was a great choice. The green sauce added an unexpected but good twist of flavor to the sandwich. The tots were really good also. read more

I visited here on an extra night in town I hadn't originally planned due to a cancelled flight. My colleague actually preferred it due to the rooftop bar. We visited on a Tuesday night and got lucky they also had live music that night with a pretty good 2 person band, The Allies. Neither of us were super hungry so I chose the smoked wings and a rum sunset cocktail. I got to choose 2 flavors which are on the side in a ramekin, their regular hot and the special Prohibition Sauce. My colleague tried to order Guinness but the bartender said they didn't have it. I later saw it listed as served in a can after the fact, which the bartender should have known. He ended up drinking scotch. And a lot of it that night. The wings ended up being very good. I love smoked wings and these were the perfect size and taste. Their regular hot is just ok, but the Prohibition sauce is really good.. My colleague also ordered a brisket bowl and said it was really good. My rum set was not that good. For $8, it should be at least drinkable, but it was too bitter and I had to ask the bartender to doctor it with some simple syrup. I guess sleep I should have stuck with their $13 cocktails, who knows. Either way, we had a pretty good time even though the night / service wasn't exactly perfect and we will remember them for the next time we come to town. read more

Which would be fine if I wanted a smoked chicken sandwich they need to put it in the description smoked. It was also very dry. Worst Patty melt we have ever had. Very interesting place! In the newer developed area in Huntsville--close to the Trash Pandas stadium! My coworker and I were able to get parked and meet up for a drink and dinner. He found this place and the description fit perfectly with the menu. Eclectic says it all. I started with an ice cold Yuengling and it was super cold which you need. The location has an upper rooftop deck and the downstairs was open to the outside. It was pretty warm for sure as it was 86 degrees even at 6:30 pm. We opted to stay and eat in the downstairs area close to the bar in search of some cooler air. My coworker ordered the pork belly and cauliflower bowl. He said it was surprisingly good and said had some spice to it. I opted for the blackened shrimp bok choy salad that our server recommended to me. The dish was tasty and the six shrimp were seasoned and cooked well - but the shrimp wasn't cleaned properly and some feet were still on the dish. Not a huge deal but just seemed odd. The Israeli couscous wasn't cleaned properly a nice add at the bottom of the bowl and I really loved the salad dressing! The only good things about this place were the ambiance and the beverages. The overpriced food was mediocre at best, and the service was slow. The Pastalaya had maybe two nibble sized pieces of anything that wasn't pasta. The wings appetizer tasted good but were cold, likely from sitting too long before being served with my entrée. To top it off, the slice of cheesecake looked like it came from a $4 miniature sample pie. This town must really be hurting for good food if this place has such a high rating. read more

I stopped by Prohibition while in town for a work trip and was greeted by the downstairs bartender who was knowledgeable of all specials and was honest about the menu. I came in during happy hour and it was starting to get a little busy and I could tell upstairs was buzzing with people but they had a very orderly system and I loved the music choices. Took Valentines Day off so I could spend time with the wife. We went to Prohibition because I've gone before on business and it seemed like a great setting with decent food. We went for a late lunch, around 1:30pm. The rooftop deck was enclosed with screens and they had heaters, so it was a decent temperature so we sat there. We ordered off their lunch menu, which honestly is a great price. The amount of food served corresponds to the low price, so I ordered two entrees like a fatty. I ordered the 5 smoked wings with the Progibition Secret Sauce, and the pick two combo with the half turkey sandwich and a bowl of chili. The wife ordered the pork bao buns with salad pick two combo. Gonna be honest, the service this visit was subpar. They had a photographer taking pictures of drinks and associates which is cool, but it definitely impacted how much attention guests got. Wings came out without the carrots and I had to ask about them, took about 10 minutes to get another beer even though I was sitting 5 feet from the bar, wife ordered her salad with honey mustard and it came with ranch, had to ask the waiter to get the right one etc. You only get cool points for memorizing our order if everything comes out correctly :V. Staff definitely seemed more concerned with hanging out then providing outstanding service which is cool for employee retention but not great formcustomer satisfaction or speedy service. Food tasted great! Just a little small on portion size. Bao buns had one small strip of pork, wings are 5 and some with carrots but no celery for $10, etc. The wings were well cooked and the sauce was a little sweet for my taste but overall very good. Wife loved the flavor and presentation on thr bao buns and liked her salad dressing a lot. My turkey sandwich was good and so was the chili. Adding fried to lunch options and raising prices a tad would probably help with being satiated. Will give this place another shot - you should too, just don't be afraid of QCing your orders. read more

Had to ask for silverware, napkins and a straw, and had to wait for them. Food wasn't much better. I had the brisket sandwich. Was nothing more than a subpar, dinky beef dip sandwich. Wife had nachos. She said they were pretty dry. Asked for extra cheese sauce and took forever to get a very tiny dish of it. All this for nearly $50, not including a tip. We chose poorly. We ordered two bowls (brisket and pork belly) at the recommendation of the waitress. More aptly, they should've been named Potato bowls as there was more spud than meat in either. Prohibition is a place I frequent when coming to the area because it easy to access when I'm driving from Bham and leaving to get back. The rooftop/outdoor seating is relaxing. Drinks and service continue to be great consistently during my visits. I've only had appetizers food wise. The cauliflower bites, Parmesan fries and oven-brisket queso are always table favs. read more

Good service too. We enjoyed the food and drinks as well. I got the citrus sunset mocktail, which was delicious. We also got the whipped feta dip. It was a little different than I anticipated (purple and with a lot of veggies) but it was good. For my meal I had the smashed potato with chicken. It was good and I had no complaints. Such a fun lunch restaurant to visit while in Huntsville!! We stopped by with a reservation for a large group of 20+ on a Friday afternoon and Prohibition was super accommodating! We had fantastic seats in what seemed like their outdoor private patio, which was so enjoyable with the beautiful Alabama weather. We had 2-3 servers who were constantly on the ball, taking orders and refilling drinks quickly. Their kindness mattered and I was thankful. The vibes of the restaurant are very relaxed and it seems like it would be perfect for drinks after work on a weekday evening or a Saturday lunch with friends!! Their expansive menu was diverse and each item was interesting. Wanting to lean on the lighter side after a busy week of work, I went for their blackened shrimp bok choy salad and it was sooo good!! Being in the area for work, I decided to check this place out. I'm glad I did! The vibe was great as soon as you pulled up/walked in. They have multiple areas and levels for you to decide what mood you're in but I don't think you could go wrong in any of them. The staff was super friendly and eager to provide great service. You can tell when it's genuine and when it's just work. The bartender (Danny?) made killer drinks and was all about the presentation and flavor. The food was solid and I liked their combinations of flavors, cuisines, and cultures. I guess that's called fusion. They're doing a great job at it! Great place to have drinks and dinner. Such a let down. The aesthetics of the place are stunning! I had been wanting to try this place for a while. We stopped by during the late afternoon and chose the upstairs patio. We were not greeted upon arrival, although the place was pretty much dead and there were two people working upstairs. We finally asked if we could sit and the waitress was kind enough to seat us. Because the service was so lackluster, we only stayed for drinks and fries. The drinks are uninspired, but the fries were good. I ordered a drink with mezcal, but it was so watered down with mixers that it negatively affected the quality of the mezcal. These are not craft cocktails, so don't go expecting any. Go for the great views but just temper your expectations. read more

I was visiting Huntsville for a short weekend and our host invited us to dine at Prohibition. My first impression was the ambiance and atmosphere. The layout and interior decoration was amazing. Multiple floors with bars on the bottom and top floor. Each level had exposure to outside as well. We sat on the rooftop level and it's perfect for an evening out with friends. Our waitress was genuinely nice and friendly. She took our drink orders which we did a round of the bourbon margaritas. The flavor was nice, but it really wasn't a strong cocktail. We ordered the brisket queso and smoked wangs for appetizers. The queso was a 10 out of 10! You could really taste the brisket and smoked flavor. I really like it! The wangs took a long time to come out, but it also was the end of the night. So all the entrees we ordered came out before wangs hit the table. My husband had the brisket sandwich and I had the Verde pork nachos. The brisket sandwich was much smaller than we expected. The buns was also wet and soggy, but he doesn't like at all. The verde nachos were good, but I think pickled jalapeños and red onion could give it some depth. The nachos are just meat, queso, and sauce, which doesn't give a lot of flavor points. The wangs did finally come, but we were all full from our entrees to really eat them. Overall, the service was great! read more

Prohibition should be prohibited. I was in town and visited twice. the first visit I ordered and never saw the waitstaff again. They were having a bar meeting that day. On the second visit we had ordered, unfortunately one of the orders was wrong so it had to be sent back (brisket sandwich). 30 min later our waiter said they are plating it now. No refills on empty drinks. 15 min later the food arrives. Being polite, I did not eat until my guest had their food. With my food sitting there for almost an hour and now cold, I left it uneaten.
