We stopped by Rolo's after going to the farmer's market to pick up breakfast to go. At 9:30 it was packed with the senior crowd. The hostess was very cordial and helpful to everyone. She immediately gave us a senior discount. I see why the seniors were there. Breakfast for 2 is 10-12 dollars cheaper here. I ordered a ham, cheese, mushroom and onion omelette. It came with hash browns and toast. My omelette was way overcooked and didn't taste very good. The hash browns were very similar to the instant hash browns that are hydrated and then cooked. The grease or oil used had an off putting taste. 3/5 Dave had scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuit and gravy. He said his food was ok. The gravy was white sauce and bland. He said the other breakfasts he had recently were much better tasting. 3/5 We will stop by and try other foods. This restaurant has been around since the early 90's and is close to homes and apartments. Many seniors live in the apartments close by and they eat at Rolo's at least 4 days a week. Rolo's has been in Huntsville at this location for as long as I can remember. It's just not my cup of tea. It's a standard meat and three. One of my first bosses at my current job took me to lunch here at Rolo's back in 2004. To me, the model train that encircled the restaurant was the highlight of our lunch. Yup, Rolo's has been in business since 1991, or 34 years now. I had either the chicken and dumplings, or the pork chop. The ambiance is typical of your meat and threes, with lots of booths and the restaurant was clean when I visited. The strip mall it is in has been painted in the last couple of years and has a fresher appearance. It is cool they offer a military discount, per their website it is 5 per cent. It is also cool they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I've only had lunch here. If you are a fan of classics like pot roast, chicken and dumplings, country fried steak, catfish, fried okra, mashed potatoes, buttermilk cornbread, and biscuits, you would likely enjoy Rolo's! read more

Quick take: food was good, service was nice and decent, restaurant was not toooo busy during peak lunch hours, but the place was a little unclean. Would come back though. French fries really food. Wife said 10/10. Patty melt also was tasty. Dressing was good but last bite had a large chunk of celery/onion which was too crunchy. Sides were tasty. Could have used a bit more chicken. My family has been coming here for years, which makes this experience even more disappointing. After waiting 35 minutes for our very simple breakfast order, my 87-year-old grandfather asked our server if our food would be coming soon. Her response? "Yeah, you're not the only one in the restaurant," before walking away. Long waits can happen, but dismissive and disrespectful service, especially toward an elderly customer, is unacceptable. Decided to stop by and try a new place. I could tell this was a staple meeting spot for retirees breakfast to start their day. The atmosphere is train inspired like diner. The food was adequate but the service provided was exceptional. Without me having to say anything they decided to replace eggs, they continued to check to see if I needed anything and kept the coffee cup full. I will admit I can be a bit of a "food snob" or critic, although the food didn't wow me the service did.. and to be honest is probably harder to find than great food. So if you want a place to take care of you and crave service like yesteryears, definitely try it out. read more

Just came home after eating the worst spaghetti I've ever had. No meat in the sauce, tasted like someone used some tomato paste as sauce. Had a very bland metallic taste and was a small portion. Salad had brown lettuce in it. I picked out about 6 pieces. Toast was plain....no butter, no garlic. Just awful! And now I feel nauseated. I hope I don't have food poisoning! Upon walking into Rolo's Cafe, I thought I walked into my Aunt Deb's house - knick-knacks everywhere, a pile of random stuff in a corner, not a bare spot on any flat surface and a fly swatter hanging by the kitchen door (ick). Of course Aunt Deb didn't have train tracks hanging from her dining room ceiling and Rolo's doesn't have my 40 year old high school graduation picture on their wall...to be honest, I stopped and looked at their health rating before we sat down. (92 BTW). There is a board with specials by the front door and a sign that says to seat yourself. We sat ourselves at a booth with cushions that needed some love. We were immediately greeted, given menus silverware and our drink orders were taken. I'd heard that Rolo's has good burgers. I didn't go wrong - a large, hand pressed patty nestled on a perfectly toasted bun and topped with lettuce, the reddest tomato I've seen since last summer, onions, pickles, mayo and mustard. I'm a ketchup girl so I ordered mine without the condiments. My BIL ordered his with everything - his bun disintegrated within the first few bites - I think you might be better off ordering your condiments on the side. I had fries that were seasoned and perfectly crisp. My BIL, who ALWAYS opts for onion rings said his were great. We both opted for the 7 oz burger which was bigger than I thought. For a guy who rarely leaves anything on his plate, even he couldn't quite finish his meal and brought home a handful of those crispy rings. I rarely eat everything in front of me and brought home half my burger and fries which made an excellent lunch after a few minutes in the air fryer. My husband opted for the grilled tilapia, mashed potatoes and fried okra. He was served a huge piece of tender grilled fish. The homemade mashed potatoes were a special treat, the okra, well, it was okra. Cobbler and banana pudding were dessert choices that I'll have to try on another visit. This southern food was really good. It was home cooking, just like mom makes. The service was very prompt. We called ahead 10 minutes and they set up tables for 11 of us. The waitress was very friendly, personable and prompt. This is an old restaurant, but they are very clean and well-established and everyone around loves them all the locals go there. They closed for about 30 days one time and everybody in the surrounding area was all up in arms. Thank goodness Rolo's opened back up. Rolos has been around for years and it is a staple for me in Huntsville. They do have the best Turnip Greens in Huntsville. Their pintos are pretty dang impressive as well. I've been coming here for years, and for me this place has way more to offer than chain restaurants. They have so many great entrees. My number one go to is the Greens and Cornbread. A huge bowl of turnip greens with pepper sauce that are just so tender and delicious. Their hot cornbread muffins are delicious. Their chef salad is amazing and HUGE and I'm pretty sure their ranch is homemade which is a very nice touch. Johns meatloaf is delicious and the meatloaf sauce/topping is just like how your grandma would make it. I love the ambiance of this restaurant, they have a train going around above you which is adorable and precious. I have heard people reference this train as a staple. The service is great and it's just a wonderful local restaurant. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary next year and I am so glad they are in The Huntsville community. read more

Stopped in for lunch today, just wanting to try the place. I had convinced myself in my head that it was an order at the counter rather than sit down restaurant, but it's the latter, not the former. Luckily, I don't mind eating alone. I'd describe Rolo's as a local Cracker Barrel. Lots and lots of generic country cooking dishes are available: meatloaf, chicken and dressing, etc. It's a moderate size restaurant with a fair amount of seating, and it was busy around lunchtime on a Tuesday. Crowd was mostly older folks. One thing I was really impressed with was the service. The hostess got me seated right away, the cashier was pleasant when I payed my bill, and most of all, my waitress, Anita, was so nice and friendly. She took great care of me, bringing me a to-go drink before I even had to ask for it. Loved her! The food, however, was just okay. I guess it was about what you'd expect. I had the chicken fingers, fries, and whole kernel corn, with a roll. Sweet tea to drink. The sweet tea was really good. The French fries were okay, fairly crispy but a little under salted and had a sort of weird greasy aftertaste. The chicken tenders were also okay, but again, kinda bland and stringy, not a ton of meat to them. Lastly, the roll was the Sister Schubert variety (which I don't mind at all, but I really needed more than one tiny carton of butter), and the corn was flavorless but for a faint saltiness. Not sweet at all, sadly. I sound harsh; the food wasn't terrible, and I'd go back to Rolo's if someone I was with wanted to visit. However, my meal was also around 11 bucks, 13 with tip, and I can get much better tenders and fries elsewhere for less -- same with country vegetables. On the whole, just a so-so experience. When you're in Huntsville and in serious need of comfort food, Rolo's Café is the place you need to be. Brightly lit on two levels, this storefront café is welcoming any time of day. There is no doubt the theme is railroading. From the moment you walk in and see the train suspended from the ceiling to the artwork adorning the walls, you know the owner is a railroad enthusiast. The menu should just say, "Mom's House" because you'll find two pages of entrées and sandwiches that you might have had growing up - meatloaf, chicken, pot roast with carrots, grilled ham and cheese, hamburgers...well, okay, Mom never would have served turnip greens. You couldn't even buy them where I grew up but everything else? Yup. Mom's home cookin'. The servers are all friendly and can't do enough to make sure you have all you need. Portions are generous, but be sure to leave room for peach cobbler. By the way, the train doesn't run full time. Ask nicely and they'll run it for you. Ten seconds into it, you'll learn why it doesn't run all the time. Let's face it, though, kids of all ages love trains, so indulge the octogenarian in your party, the one with the 8 year old kid locked inside. Ask your server to run the train for you. I give no stars for the cold shoulder I received when I walked in. The people seated stared at me as if I came through the wrong door! Whatevs ... the decor is funky& outdated , just steals your appetite. Their menu is almost the exact same menu at Blueplate. The peach cobbler was syrup! I mean one bite made my teeth hurt, and it was greasy with NO crust, everyone knows the best part of a cobbler is a crust. The side salad.. fuggedaboutit ! A few pieces of lettuce, exactly 1 carat, about 5 small diced tomatoes and dressing. In fact, the ranch was the only good thing. Another sucky establishment on Airport road! It would be nice NOT TO HAVE TO TRACEL TO UNIVERSITY OR MIDTOWN for a good meal! It smells old & it needs a deep clean. Kitchen nightmare beware. And get a used to serving ALL races! read more

It's been over six months since we've been to Rolo's Cafe, we dropped in today for a late lunch. I ordered a Country Fried Steak with a side of mashed potatoes and Mac & Cheese. My fiancee ordered a Country Fried Steak also, but with side of Turnip Greens as well as the mashed potatoes. Food was tasty, but I did notice the portion size was not as plentiful as it had been on our previous trip. So why the downgrade from 4 Stars to 3 Stars ? One word -- service. Our waitress (she never did introduce herself, and her name was not on our bill), was not the most courteous person we've ever met. She seemed to be in a rush to get us going (we did have one of the shortest lunches ever, from start to finish). Never asked us how everything was, or if we wanted dessert. She did ask if we wanted some "drinks to go", but by that time, we were just ready to go. The cashier at the counter wasn't much better. Seemed to have some type of attitude. Rolos is a friendly place with a good variety of choices from the menu! It has been on Airport Rd for a long time! My husband and I eat there a lot because we enjoy their great "meat and three meals". Sometimes we go for the Philly Steak or chicken salad sandwiches with fries or chips. Our daughter and her family enjoy it too! (especially the country fried steak!) And, don't forget to check out the daily specials on the board when you walk in the door. The hours on here are incorrect. We have been twice based on the hours listed and they were closed both times.

The reason for even having a star was bc their service was good. The food however, was not. It tasted greasy and was reminiscent of hospital food from 20 years ago. There is not much anything good to say about the food so I will just leave it at that. read more
