Rarely do I ever come across a bbq joint that doesn't have burnt ends or burnt ends on the secret menu (this place didn't have burnt ends). Ribs still had the membrane on the back but I appreciated that the rib meat was not fall off the bone. My favorite part of my dining experience was the hot sauce and potato salad. We tried out Ole Hickory for lunch on Sunday after passing by the sign for it a million times over the years. Not a lot of BBQ restaurants (or restaurants period) are open on Sundays, so I was pleased they were available to us. One interesting thing about them is they also do breakfast, with menus and items straight from Beignet Cafe, which sadly closed earlier this year. Same owner, same goodies. I haven't tried the breakfast here yet, but I can say the stuff they served at BC was a solid stand-in for NOLA style beignets, so add that to your list! I'm here to talk about lunch and BBQ, though, so don't let me get too distracted. There's ample parking, space to sit and eat inside and outside, and the place is decorated super cute. You can tell lots of locals have been coming over the years because there's pictures hanging up of kids "riding" on the pig statue outside. Adorable. :) They have a fairly large menu for a bbq joint and it took us a minute to pick out what we wanted. Plates come with three sides instead of the usual two, so that made this side-loving girl very happy. My parents split a large order of the bbq pork nachos as well as a side of hush puppies. I tried the pulled pork plate, opting for French fries, Mac and cheese, and something called sweet corn nuggets for my sides. We also got some banana pudding to take home. Prices were reasonable at a little over $30 bucks for all that food + 3 drinks. Service wasn't insanely friendly but they got the job done in a reasonable span of time. They're still masking up, sanitizing, and wearing gloves, which I very much appreciate. My order came out wrong at first (with ribs instead of pulled pork), but the staff apologized and fixed it quickly. Overall, the food was quite solid! I'll go from weakest to best item. Weakest link was the macaroni and cheese. It was low on flavor and on the mushy side. The banana pudding had also definitely seen better days. I know folks use older bananas for their pudding, but some of the slices in this pudding were completely dark brown, very mushy, and unappetizing to look at. Flavors were okay though, no artificial banana flavor. Good stuff: the pork! Pulled nicely, not too fatty, subtle smoke. A solid offering. Nachos had a ton of burnt ends on them, which made my parents happy. Nachos are the regular, almost ball-park kind; no Mexican tortilla chips here, just the regular, extra salty rounds. Works nicely with the slightly sweet, slightly vinegary sauce. French fries were standard but cooked correctly and salted nicely. I really liked the hush puppies (parents let me try one). Super crispy, perfectly fried, crunchy on the outside but slightly soft on the inside. They came with a white sauce that paired very well with them. Lastly, the standout favorite was the little fried corn nuggets!!! I'd never had anything quite like them before but they were delightful and really could've almost been dessert themselves. They're just little mouthfuls of corn in a sweetish breading fried up till crispy. I looooooved them and would come back for those alone! I got the chocolate gravy and biscuits. They was absolutely delicious. Just like my mom used to make. My husband told me to add this to my review, he tried their BBQ sauces with his breakfast. Two main ones were available, one called Sweet and one called Hot. He said both were very good; neither were too thin or vinegary. The sweet bbq sauces was not too sweet (he was worried it would be candy sweet). The Hot was labeled as a 5 pepper blend, and was not overpowering. Wow! this is the best catering service. My daughter was married at Hampton Cove Wedding Venue. They catered everything down to the smallest detail. Everyone was so pleased with the food and no one threw food away. People went back for a second plate. My daughter had the most beautiful wedding a day to remember. Went for breakfast and got a breakfast bowl. The food had absolutely no flavor, utensils and bowls were all disposable. They charged for a cup of water, coffee was very bad and I'm not picky. The atmosphere was that of a prison. I suggest revamping this restaurant and it wouldn't take much to make it go far. Employees need to great customers, get silverware, plates and cups so it feels more like a restaurant and less like a prison. Don't charge for water that's just screaming your cheap and comes off as unwelcoming. The coffee should be made by people that at least drink coffee and not a watered down gas station coffee. Please use seasoning, any at all and it will make a huge difference. read more

So this was recommended on Facebook and I thought what the hell! Let's give it a try! The boss and I shipped the kid off to the grandparents and made it a date night. It's a quaint little restaurant and the staff were very friendly. She got a loaded potato with pulled pork. She said that the potato was very soft and fluffy, one of the best she has had. While it may look like there was a lot of meat on the potato, it was a thin layer. So little in fact that she could barely taste it as it was overpowered by the starchiness of the tater. She also said it could have used some more butter. I'm a big boy and decided to try the three meat platter so that I could get a taste of various meat. Let's start with the sides. The baked beans and potato salad were good. Not award winning but they were delicious. The slaw on the other hand was pretty dang good. I really enjoyed it. On to the meats... the pulled pork was some of the best I have ever had. Incredible bark and literally melted in your mouth. The smoked chicken had been under the heat lamp a little too long as the skin was as hard as a mummified pharaoh. But the meat had good flavor. The ribs were recommended by the lady at the counter. They were the most disappointing meat I have ever had. They were small but I guarantee they started out larger. This ribs had sat in a warmer long enough to shrivel and develop a texture almost like jerky. I did get one good bite and can say that I'm certain that they are very good if you can get them when they are fresh. On to the sauces... they were very good. The sweet sauce was very tangy and savory. Personally, I enjoyed the hot sauce most of all. The real question is would I return? Yes. I want to try again and see what the meat tastes like fresh. This is not a five star yuppy BBQ joint. It's a simplistic dive that doesn't offer a lot of thrills or culinary magic. There is nothing wrong with that. Staff was very pleasant, accommodating. So for that alone, given people have different tastes, I'd recommend trying. I had a mixture of brunch and dinner to-go orders. Beignets, mini cinnamon bites, and French toast were solid. I wasn't a huge fan of the yeast rolls type taste of them in the middle, but they were ok. New to the area and a local took me there for the first time. Well worth the drive. The BEST pork I've ever had, bar none. The baked beans were exceptionally good, and the potato salad and slaw were also delightful. This plate was only $5.95 or so... a fantastic deal. I left with a happy and full belly. I made a mistake by putting extra sauce on the pork; it wasn't needed, as it was served perfectly as it was. Lesson learned! :) The only negative was the over-fried hushpuppies. Our family was so impressed with the service we received at our daughter's wedding. We used Ole Hickory BBQ as our wedding caterer. They went out of their way to make the reception run so smoothly. The owners were also willing to answer any questions on the phone and quickly responded to all emails throughout the wedding process. Love the food very friendly normally but last two times there the service has been non existent. You go to the counter to order and you have to go to the counter to get your food I guess to much trouble for them to walk around the counter and take 15 more steps to bring your food and you have to clean your table off but yet they want you to leave them 15%, 18%, or 20% tip. Today after going to get our food we were eating and watching the TV they have in the dining for the customers and one of the women came out of the kitchen looked at me saw I was watching the TV then changed the channel and walked back to the kitchen I ask one of the others to change it back and they didn't know how and the one that changed acted like she didn't know what they were talking about. read more

Drew and Denise are always friendly and run a friendly crew. Ole Hickory is a country restaurant with overall good service and good food. They often participate in and/or lead community fundraisers. On July 6, 2014, I reviewed this establishment and rated it with fewer stars. We had been there several times and I knew their food was very good and reliable enough to order a take-out meal for house guests. So I ordered in advance and picked up for our guests, but we did not get their best meat that day. I was disappointed and embarrassed. So, I complained about that with specific information here and they wrote back! The owner/manager read my review, met with staff to address issues I cited, and offered replacements. So today, Sept 1, 2015, I edited my review. Ole Hickory is the most convenient restaurant to our home and a little while after July 2014 we returned several times to eat in. Everything was perfect. They have the best hours and dining space among the several BBQ places in the New Market/Maysville/ Winchester Road areas. Staff members are always helpful and friendly, they have ample parking, tables are clean and comfy (I like the new chairs!), and condiments are readily available - they have The Best white sauce for BBQ chicken!
