Beautiful hiking trail/snow shoe trail. There are several trails that you can hike up to. In the winter, you can either do snow shoe or cross country skiing. We went up to yurts area. The view is spectacular on the way up. Shortly you'll be in the woods and in the shade. After the hike, we went to the lodge for lunch. Bowdie is the friendliest and sweetest dog you'd ever met. We order the kimchi tofu rice, curry bowl. Both are vegan and exceptional delicious! The lentil soup is really tasty as well. Their wonderful staff and services just leaves us such wonderful memories.

Imagine the creatures comforts of a luxury Sun Valley ski resort combined with the rugged grandeur of a Rocky Mountain Nordic ski trail system, where the snows are deep and the solitude is deafening; a place where microbeers and wine flow and the slopes are fresh, steep, and expansive; where kids can sled and adults can ski and everyone - including the family dog - feels like they are on familiar ground. Can't be done, you say? Am I asking for too much? Is this a mission impossible? Or is it ... Galena? Galena? The peak, the pass, the lodge. Take your pick. Any way you choose, you're above 7000 feet in the Boulder Mountains of Idaho's Sun Valley, globally famous for the downhills but also a gem-in-the-rough paradise for backcountry and cross-country ski adventures both great and small. My home territory is in Western Montana, where places like Lolo Pass and Chief Joseph Pass (which are, technically, in Idaho) offer excellent ski trails and immense amounts of Rocky Mountain powder from November through March. But they don't have Deschutes Beer on tap. Or carrot apple ginger soup and chile verde specials. Or locally roasted coffee from Ketchum, ID. Or immaculately groomed trails for classic and skate: meadows and ridges and steep slopes and creekside routes, alongside snowshoe trails and rental yurts and wine and full moon dinners. Galena Lodge, run by husband-and-wife duo, Erin and Don, provides the food, the drinks, and the overwhelming levels of comfort. The Blaine Country Recreation District (BCRD) maintains hundreds of km of trails in the area, making it a destination above and beyond the state of Idaho. So ... you can eat and drink well - California locavore well - while enjoying Idaho mountain scenery and endless fields of freshly-fallen snow? Even in early April? Yes, Virginia. There is a Santa Claus. He lives in Galena, Idaho. (and he skis the Psycho trail daily). 1.Day pass for the 50 km of groomed trails: $15. 2. Lunch of soup, chile verde, cornbread, sourdough bread, a pint of local beer, and a cup of locally roasted coffee: $20. 3. Three hours of skiing along steep slopes and open meadows of soft packed spring snow: priceless. Note: no potatoes were harmed in the writing of this review.

I visited Galena for a long weekend in January 2016 because a good friend was working there for the winter. We took advantage of the snowshoes and ski rentals and explored some of their dog friendly trails. The snowshoe trail was my favorite, winding through the snowy mountain woods. Back in the lodge we sampled the fare: tasty soup and baked goods (don't miss the Don bars). The prices were what you should expect in the mountains. I didn't stay in the yurts but if my experience at the lodge is any indication, I expect a night or two in a Galena yurt would be an enjoyable mountain adventure! If you're in the Ketchum area for a sunny winter weekend it would be a mistake to skip Galena! Note: no cell service or public wireless at the lodge.

We attended their "Full Moon Dinner" this January. It was AMAZING! The staff is very friendly (we arrived very early and had a few drinks by the fire while we waited for dinner seating). Appetizer: Seared potato cake with spicy remoulade and crispy bacon over mixed greens with potato crisps Soup: Grilled tomato w/ caramelized fennel Entree choices: Roasted pork loin w/ blueberry BBQ sauce, roasted red potatoes and a carrot parsnip puree with crispy parsnip chips Or Grilled mahi-mahi w/ a roasted tomato and caper salsa, quinoa pilaf and a carrot parsnip puree and toasted pumpkin seeds Dessert: citrus cheese cake w/ whipped cream and raspberry sauce No full moon skiing since it was snowing, but we skied the trails around the lodge the next day. Idaho's back country is pristine!

I heard about the hype of this place... the location is unique and it's perfect after completing a workout like snow-shoeing (like our case). The food is OK, so if you are coming to this place is mainly for the drinks (beer) and ambience... good place to hang-out with friends. The scenery around is just gorgeous, we love it !

The FRIES are a MUST order :)

Got out of the car and heard music! I love music during lunch time, and it was live! They had a Dog area to seat with a beautiful waterfall and the usual area.Huge patio area and a huge green field to play with the kids or some freesbe time! People where everywhere, but there was plenty of seating area! I got a Tuna Salad and my man got Smoked Turkey Sandwich-- ALL OF IT WAS FRESH. Our choice of drinks: MAC AND JAC Uhhhh love it! I can't find this beverage anywhere other than the NW area, so I was pleased to see the choices of beer had my own favorite! Customer service was nice, fast pace and go go go because the line was busy(about 10 employees working different stations). The teamwork I saw for moving the line was AWESOME. 1.espresso 2.hard A beverages 3.desserts 4.huge kitchen and accurate order (the lady in the back kept repeating the orders that were going out and making sure it was as the customer asked) 5. Inside nice and cool (plenty of seating areas) 6.kids section to keep them busy (toys) 7.window view all around (never missing out on the beautiful outside) 8.they bring the food to you after you order After our meal I had to check out there desserts because it was a huge selection: A slice of Cherry Almond Cake was amazing and we downed that like no tomorrow:) After we sat near the small waterfall in the dog area to avoid the sun.(they have huge umbrellas outside, but we wanted more shade) The ladies bathroom are totally private. Full doors and two bathrooms only. I really enjoyed coming here. Its casual, Its chill and it's a nice drive to view the great outdoors! Thanks for having Mac and Jac Galena Lodge!! And see you Thursday for the outdoor BBQ:)

Everything felt easy. The service was anticipated, the setting beautiful without being overproduced, and the overall energy refined yet deeply comfortable. It's really the kind of place that lets you slow down without ever feeling bored. One detail I loved and didn't expect? The on-site ice rink. There's something charming and nostalgic about skating right on property, a small touch that ends up becoming a core memory. Add in the heated outdoor pool, wellness facilities, beautiful dining options, and miles of scenic surroundings, and it's clear this resort understands how to create an experience, not just a stay. What truly elevates Sun Valley is how seamlessly they handle off-property adventures as well. Whether it's horseback riding through Idaho's landscape or arranging wine tours, the concierge makes exploring beyond the resort completely effortless, no planning fatigue required. The pros: - Minimal (if any) lines - Fabulous instructors (special shoutout to the amazing Clay who has taught all 3 of my kids to be amazing skiers...and even more importantly to love skiing) - Plenty of options for a day of beginning skiing here: 1/4 dollar, 1/2 dollar (when it's open) and full dollar for a challenge - The last day on dollar is super fun for families with music, costumes and the famous pond skim event (loved watching those risk takers try to get across the pond on skis) To be improved: -1/2 dollar seems to be closed all the time limiting us beg skiers to 1/4 dollar - 1/2 dollar chair lift is also pretty old and needs to be replaced - Dollar closes way earlier than any other ski resort I know, which impacts many spring break travels. Would love to see them keep it open an extra few weeks and close when they close Baldy - The very expensive food caters to kids, but could use some healthier and tastier options for us adults learning to ski Overall, I've become very fond of Dollar mountain during my trips to Sun Valley and would love to spend more time doing spring skiing there if they'll keep it open just a little longer in future years.
