Couldn't ask for more. They stayed open late (literally unlocking the door to let me in after I called minutes before closing) to help buy a surprise gift for my wife for our anniversary (that she'd seen a few days prior). Then they stayed open even later to wrap it for me. Wow, color me impressed. On top of that great customer experience, they also have a great selection , both for fly fishing/hunting and a whole host of apparel. They even had some night-crawlers for sale, which were perfect for taking my toddlers to a local pond. All in all, very impressed. Awesome fly fishing trip with our guide Scott! My wife and I recently went on a guided fly fishing trip through Silver Creek Outfitters and couldn't have had a better time. Booking was easy, we used their online booking process and received a call from the store to finalize our reservation. Showed up the next day, met our guide Scott and drove down to the fishing area. Scott was extremely friendly and very patient with us while we were learning a new skill. He was very knowledgeable and put us on some nice fish. Couldn't have asked for a better time. If you are in the area and want to try fly fishing, give these guys a shot. read more

OK, so I have all the money in the world and I want to go fly-fishing. Well not really, I mean the money part, but if YOU have lotsa' bucks and you need clothes, gear, advice, or a guide for that outdoor adventure you want to go on, this is your place. You can get everything here you'll need for your trip except that bottle of 20 year old Scotch you'll undoubtedly be savoring after bagging that grouse or catching the fish of a lifetime. This place is worth the visit even if you're not buying, or not buying much, advice is free (they hire many itinerant trout bums) and the fly selection is outstanding. What can I say about this place other than just awesome. I've been going here since they were at the other end of town in much more humble digs. If you are in town for fly fishing, don't let the Aspen-esque ambiance and the "Lifestyles of the Rich And Famous" priced items on the left hand side of the store scare you away, this is one of the best damned fly fishing shops you will ever go into, period. One thing I know is fly fishing with my fishing BS radar being sharp and these guys pass every test. They know what they are talking about. Not a bunch of young guys passing through, these appear to be guys who have been around for a long time and plan to stay. The kind you can trust to give you the best information and sell you the best options for whatever you are trying to do on the water. Not the most expensive option, the BEST option for what you are doing. I booked a guide from them for Silver Creek and the process was flawless. I can't tell you how many times I have booked guides from places that flake on you, people who treat guiding like a hobby instead of a business. So these guys must have thought I was a nut calling as many times as I did to check and double check plans. But they pleasantly put up with me and my guide was at the right place at the right time with equipment to compliment mine and lead me on a memorable day of fishing. 10 out of 10 for the whole day guided experience. Again, don't let the prices on the left side of the store scare you ( there were shirts on a rack outside that were on sale when I was there, I liked them until I saw the price was $250!). The fly fishing stuff is the same price as everywhere else. The flies are the same price and the the selection is staggering, biggest I have seen outside of shops in West Yellowstone. The edge though is the advice. I happen to mention that I would be steelhead fishing in a week and had some shooting head questions. The guys that I thought would just know trout schooled me on steelhead rigs. Hell, they even gave me perfect restaurant recommendations. Awesome If you are a fly fisherman, this is THE place to go in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area in my opinion. I never went back to the old place in Sun Valley village since they twice treated me and my family like hillbillies years ago (I think they closed, probably because of my boycott ;+} ), Lost River Outfitters across the street was manned by some kids who were more interested in talking to girlfriends on cell phones than helping someone who said they wanted to buy a reel and Sturtevants, well I didn't go into there and if they are as good with fishing stuff as they are with skiing I'll give them a shot next time. A fly fisherman can't leave that place without a smile on his face. Thanks for a great experience SCO, you guys MADE my vacation. See you next year! read more

Some employees seem put out in helping you. Others are friendly. I thought maybe it was just a one-time experience and a bad-attitude from the younger blond woman who works there, but we were also treated rudely by another employee last year when we visited. The shop is great, prices are high but the selection is good. But not good enough to have to deal with rude, low-brow employees. Especially when there is another large outfitter one or two blocks down the street, which is where I'll go next time I'm in Ketchum. If you haven't been treated rudely here, you're lucky. Save your money by going somewhere else, because Silver Creek Outfitters doesn't care about you or any customer, because they have so many tourists every season. They could not survive as a business anywhere else. You've been warned. read more

Just a quick update. My husband and I both took the 101 Fly Fishing Class from Jim Sommercorn. As my first review states, it was an outstanding experience. Given how good a teacher he is we decided instead of taking his 201 class we would hire him as a guide to take us out on the river and teach us the 201 class on the water. If there was anyway of giving Jim and Silver Creek a 10 rating we would. I cannot say enough about how good this experience has been. My goal this summer was to learn to fly fish and because of Jim and Silver Creek I am well on my way. And, what a great start to what I hope will be decades of fly fishing. My wife and I have been fly fishing for upwards of 10 years now. We've been to some of the hot spots (Missoula, Yellowstone, etc.), always with guides who know the area, and we nearly always have a good time on the water. We thought we knew what to expect when we went to Ketchum for three full days of fishing. Suffice to say, Silver Creek Outfitters far exceeded our expectations. We asked to have the same guide go with us all 3 days. No problem. We told them we would be bringing some gear but would still need some loaners, we weren't sure what or when. No problem. My wife wanted to check out a new 5 wt rod on the trip, so I asked whether they would let her try two or three different rods. No problem. She ended up buying one of the rods, and so they voluntarily waived our miscellaneous equipment rental fees for the trip. I thought that was a solid thing to do. Look: fishing with guides can be expensive, and Silver Creek is no exception; they charge what most professional guides/outfitters charge. But if you get the right guides -- the ones who know their stuff, the ones who are there at 8 a.m. when they say they will be, the ones who do everything for you (if that's what you want or need), the ones who spend nearly 12 hours per day for three straight days with you, the ones who jump up and down when YOU catch a nice fish, and the ones who are just genuinely nice people to talk to and be around -- well that makes all the difference in the world, if you ask me. And that's exactly what we got with Silver Creek Outfitters. Our guide was Jake Nelsen. The guy is top notch in my book. Enough said. We told Jake we didn't want to see another angler when we were on the water, and we wanted to check out different water each of our three days. He was fully on-board with that plan and did all he could to accommodate. Day one: wading the Big Lost (three spots on the same river). Day two: floated the Salmon River and then, in a little detour ON OUR WAY HOME for the day, pulled off and sight-casted for another hour to some bull trout (some strikes but nothing landed unfortunately). Day three: tubed two sections of Silver Creek, where we had the privilege of fishing some of the biggest rainbow and brown trout we've seen. (Silver Creek is NOT the place to go if you want to be left alone, but it is one of the coolest fisheries with some of the craziest trout you'll ever see.) If you head to Sun Valley for guided fishing, I fully recommend going with Silver Creek Outfitters. If you can sign up for a day on the water with Jake Nelsen, even better. read more

This is a destination whenever visiting Sun Valley for the entire family. High quality, great assortment of items. But the real point of difference is the fly fishing merchandise and expertise. SCO is totally committed to the customer, the staff is always helpful and whether with a a map or a guide, they will get you on the fish. If you only have one day to fish while in the area, hire a SCO guide and enjoy all that the area has to offer! read more
