Five minutes later he delivered a red plastic basket with a split torpedo roll loaded with a fat frankfurter, slices of fried potato, dark brown mustard and covered over with a blanket of sautéed green pepper. First bite told the tale. The bread was still crusty with soft inside; the dog was full of beefy garlic flavor; the potatoes were hot and fully cooked, and the green pepper was layered over everything to hold in the heat and moisture. Each chomp revealed all the texture and taste cues that these local Jersey specialties are famous for. The brown mustard provided the final spicy kick in the butt. While I ate, the big man, Ray, came over to chat. Turned out that we knew some of the same people from the Chambersburg neighborhood. In fact my stepson lived on the same street and Ray knew the previous owner of the home, my step's uncle, Alex. It was a pleasant conversation and it was great to recollect with him.
