We were driving through Springfield and looking for a place to eat. We stumbled upon Gabatoni's with the help of other Yelp reviews. I was a little hesitant based on the outside and my family was rolling their eyes when we pulled up. We had a short wait since the place was packed. We started with the cheese garlic bread and marina - delicious! We ordered two pizzas and the ravioli. Everything was great, especially the pizza! Our server was friendly and we got extra attention because we sat in the bar. Lots of locals. You could tell the customers had been dining here for years. We loved the pizza and staff. Went there for lunch with my family yesterday. There were six of us. Gabatonis is a family fav. I can remember having Gabatonis as a kid and loving the freshness of the ingredients and the corn meal crumbs on the bottom of the crispy thin crust! Yesterday was no different! Phenomenal meal! Toasted ravioli and chicken livers fried to a golden perfection to start. Personal size pizzas and chicken parm for the entrees. Good Lord! The portions are huge! And finally, the most impressive part of our dining experience was the waiter Victor. Took great care of us, kept our beverages filled, and was extremely knowledgeable about the menu! What a wonderful place to come and eat. The staff is always so incredibly friendly and kind. The food is excellent. We've been three times now and each time has been spectacular. The pizza is very good, always hot and fresh. The cheese bread is wonderful and the chicken livers are fresh and fried to perfection. While we've yet to have the fried mushrooms, they looked amazing. We saw another table order them last week and they commented on how good they were. Normally we come a bit later after a hockey game on the weeknight and from service to food you would have thought it was middle of lunch or dinner hour. Can't say enough about this place. A hidden gem and a reminder of the 80s I would say. So comfortable and down home, you have got to try them out. Again I cannot day enough about the friendliness of your staff. Do you remember that strange uncle you used to have? His house smelled like a combination of burned hair, bananas and cleaning chemicals - but you knew none of those things were present. His collection of M&M's and Disney memorabilia were cool when you were little - not so much when you think back on it. His walls were covered with random cheap art he gets at the Salvation Army. He never married, hardly left the house and moved somewhere down south about 20 years ago and nobody has heard from him sense. That's what this place reminds me of. The place looks like a craphole on the outside, smells funny on the inside, is cramped, dark and the walls are covered with inexplicably awful, random art - but not in a charming, sarcastic way. In a "these people obviously don't give a shart" way. The food wasn't good. The salad was rubbery, possibly previously frozen, sprinkled with with processed, orange cheese. I got a meatball sandwich. There was nothing to it. Came with bagged chips. No beer selection, besides domestics. Only saw one girl working. She did well, given she was having to do everything herself. Other reviewers rave about the pizza. I've never had it, and never well. The issue here is pride. It's obvious that the owners have no pride in the atmosphere or building itself. If a restaurant looks and feels as bad as this place, it's difficult to think much pride is taken in cleanliness or food preparation. I couldn't even get delivery from this place, knowing what it looks like. And I don't mean to sound shallow here - i know it could. But this place made quite an impression on me. I've been eating pizza from this place since i was a kid. Only other pizza place in town thats in the same league is Joes. Gab's is the thin crust king in this town. You can say what you want about all the chain restaurants in this town and the nightlife sucks and there is nothing to do but we own thin crust pizza.Even the average places ,lookin at you B&B are better than what you find elsewhere. Lookin at you Imo's. I don't want to hear no yap about thick crust or deep dish. This is about thin crust baby.And I definitely don't want to hear "Well , you've just never had good deep dish pizza." I get it. Get over yourself and your love of that blob of pizza you relish. Judge this for what it is. Thin crust , i mean thin crust pizza. Heres what you do: Hit the bar. Get a pitcher of whatever you think is cool. Don't even look at the menu. Order a large four item and an order of fried mushrooms. Thats it. enjoy the draft beer and regale the bartender with tales of your misspent youth until the shrooms arrive. Bite in to one and then limp your sorry ass to the bathroom cause the grease that hit the roof of mouth is about 378 degrees and you need to regroup.Don't dawdle in the bathroom , wipe those tears away and head back to your seat cause sweet mother that pizza is comin out and you don't want to miss it. My family and I ate here during our Midwest road trip this summer... I never would have stopped and gone in because of the no windows, odd exterior except the Yelp reviews were good. But the tomato garlic pizza was delicious, as was the garlic cheese bread. And the service was much better than I'd expected. Very family friendly in the non-bar part. What I ordered: baked lasagna, Texas cake, Dr Pepper Baked Lasagna: came in a bowl. Very saucy and cheesy. At least half of my bites consisted of only sauce and cheese. I packaged 3/4 of the bowl in a to-go box and the thing completely lacked integrity and formed a sort of pile. The sauce tasted pretty close to my grandmothers except quite salty. Tasted excellent reheated the next day. Came with garlic bread which was comparable to the frozen French loaf kind, and a side salad with cucumber and tomato. The tomato slices on my salad seemed a little mushy. I would have like croutons but didn't ask. Run of the mill restaurant side salad. Nothing special. Cost the same as 4-5 gallons of gas. Texas cake: maybe I'm biased by my aunts famous Texas sheet cake, but this was a lame substitute. Seemed a little dry and was randomly cold in some places and warm in others-I suspect that it was refrigerated and microwaved. The icing was good, no complaints. Also, mine had walnuts, which I like, but I'm not sure if they're able to omit them if asked. The size was about 4 inches by 5 inches, fairly generous. The cake was perfectly acceptable, but I'm used to a moister cake served warm out of the oven, so this didn't quite live up to my expectations. You could get a comparable or even superior full sized cake at a grocery store for a similar price. Cost was 2 gallons of gas. Dr Pepper: seemed expensive, though I usually get water at restaurants so perhaps the price was run of the mill. Cost 1 gallon of gas. My friends ordered chicken Alfredo, a side of Mac and cheese, and a personal pizza. Friend 1 wanted more Alfredo sauce on his pasta, Friend 2 was glad about the generous portion size of the Mac and cheese and was happy with her pizza (chicken bacon and ranch, maybe?). The restaurant itself was more a family friendly place than someplace you might take a date. There were 2 or 3 8-10 tops and the rest were 4 tops. It was so loud we could barely hear each other across the table. I'm not sure if this is normal on a Thursday night or not. The place was fully decked out with Halloween decorations, which I personally enjoyed. The waitstaff and hostess were all friendly and helpful. Overall, the prices were a little higher than a chain but the quality was higher and you get to support a local business. I'll recommend this place if I get visited by family. read more

I've been eating at Gabatoni's for 40 years but their service and food quality has become so bad that today was the last time. The last four experiences there have all been problematic. Tonight we ordered the ravioli and instead of serving us the ravioli that they've served for years, they served us some frozen Chef Boy Ardee looking ravioli that they attempted poorly to bread. The manager wouldn't even come to the phone when we called. When we returned the food the manager's excuse was "we ran out of our ravioli". Apparently in his mind it's acceptable to just serve his customers garbage and charge the same price as he would for good food and also not even mention it up front. When he refunded the money it was $2.59 short. He asked what else we received, like we were holding back $2.59 worth of food. Does he not know his own menu and pricing? And after the hassle of picking up the food and returning it he's going to question me over $2.59??? Wow. They didn't bother to give a receipt so he actually made us pull up the email from the bank showing the transaction amount. He then informed me that they charge for pickup orders. Let that sink in: they charge $2.59 for you to drive to their restaurant and pick up your own food. Last time we ordered appetizers while dining in, the appetizer and salads (which are included in the meal price) came out after the main course. They seemed surprised that no one wanted the salads or appetizers at that point. The manager corrected this by not charging the six of us for a tea and soda. The salad price is included in the meal, two free drinks doesn't fix anything or equal what we paid for, let alone cover the inconvenience. The time prior to that the appetizer also came out after the main course and was returned. I even had to go myself to get refills because the service was so poor. The staff has been in constant turnover during the last three years and the manager is clearly not competent for the job. It's a shame because the food and service there used to be quite good, albeit expensive. It's certainly no longer worth the prices they're charging. read more

I have been here twice. Service was absolutely HORRIBLE the first time. I watched my server smile and talk to every other table except for ours, so there was no way this woman was just having a bad day. She wouldn't even make eye contact with me, and ignored me anytime I said anything, even thank you. She legitimately never even said one full sentence the entire time we were there. People often treat people who look young differently when they dine-out, but this was literally the worst and most obvious experience I have ever had. And as a restaurant employee I never make my dining a complication on the staff. I am only giving 2 Stars because the Alfredo sauce was good. read more

Came into Springfield late at night and wasn't sure what I could find that late at night (11:00 pm ) and we where looking for a dine-in location because we had been diving several hours before. To our pleasure we found this restaurant with late hours, dine-inn and from the reviews it appeared to be good. Once we made our way in we were greeted by a friendly bartender and our waitress was friendly as well. We ordered Pizza,spaghetti and soup. The pizza was thin and crispy, sauce and cheese was very flavorful, the pasta was soft and the sauce was warm and delicious , the soup was good as well and had a good amount of ingredients in it. Atmosphere was just as I expected. Old and dark, but that doesn't bother me. We ordered an appetizer combo. This thing was HUGE! Ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza w/extra cheese. We regularly travel for one hour just to eat at Gabatoni's. This place is a step back in time and feels like I'm going to one of the old supper clubs with my grandparents but with better food. Update 2015-- the restaurant has been remodeled and the prices have gone up, to compensate for new decor I guess. Stopped by in June for dinner, ordered an appetizer, 2 pizzas and we had 4 beers between us. The bill was $60. A few months later I ordered two small pizzas for carry out- a cheese/sausage and an EBA but with anchovy and the price was $50. $50 for carry out small pizzas???! I did not get an itemized receipt so I called the next day for prices...that small EBA pizza with anchovy was $28 alone, and it only had 3 meats (maybe 4) and the rest was veggies. The sausage pizza was $18. I stopped going here for pizza as I feel I was ripped off and now I'm just annoyed so I won't be returning for awhile. read more

For Springfield, it's about as authentic as you can get. Eat at the bar, that's where it's at. I love the old-school atmosphere and the eclectic crowd. Don't expect fast service, this is a place to go and relax. Seriously, the service is slow. As far as food goes, just order the pizza - and don't be afraid to try something different.
