Been ordering Gabatonis pizza once a month or more for over 60 years. Durning Covid seems like pizza recipe changed...something in the sauce or spices are different. Hadn't ordered in a few months and heard the old recipe was back!!! Ordered one and was very disappointed...same as a few months ago. It's just not the same as the first 60 years!!! There are a dozen pizza places close to me. I don't need to drive to Gabatonis for an average pizza. So sad to lose the best pizza in town. read more

Gabatoni's is clearly doing something right when it comes to pizza. I ordered a pepperoni and sausage, and it hit all the right notes. Plenty of toppings, good flavor, and that satisfying balance between crisp crust and gooey cheese. If I was only judging the pizza, this would be an easy 5-star review. But I like to branch out, so I added the fried ravioli to my order. That's where things dipped a bit. The flavor was nice, but the breading felt more like armor than a light coating, which made it harder to enjoy the filling inside. It wasn't bad, just a little heavy-handed compared to the otherwise spot-on pizza. So overall, I'd call it a mixed bag: stellar pizza that I'd happily order again, paired with an appetizer that didn't quite match the same level. First time we have been back since original owner had the business. The food is not even the same. The pizza did not have the same sauce, not sure what it was. The rigatoni noodles were not drained leaving allot of water on the plate. The meat sauce had no seasoning almost like plain tomato sauce. The pizza could have been cooked longer in the oven. There was only one person working besides the cooks. Service slow but I do not blame her. We will never go back. Change the name too, people remember the good days of that name. read more

Absolutely the worst service possible we arrived around 8 pm on Wednesday night and only two other tables were occupied 90% of place was empty and yet there were tons of dirty tables not cleaned. We gave our order at 8:10 pm and kid you now pizza didn't come until 9:10 pm one hour later! Quality was awful and prices are a lot higher than prior. I asked to order another beer when pizza arrived and waitress refused saying the closed at 9 pm and I reminded her the pizza didn't arrive until 9:10 pm a hour after we ordered and she didn't care! We originally starting going to Gabatoni's when it first moved to Laurel Street. We were loyal fans. Everything was excellent! When just the drive-up was open, it started to go down hill. You never knew if the pizza was going to be good or not. Once it was sold, we had heard the recipes were sold with the restaurant. When my family comes in from out of state, we would always go there. It was hit and miss. Can they not follow the recipes? Are the employees not supervised? What is going on? The pizza was either too done, had way too many peppers and onions, too many pepperoni's etc. Even the spaghetti tasted like they just opened a can of tomato paste and poured it over the spaghetti for the sauce. I don't know who the manager is, but he needs to know what's going on here. Please, Please go back to the original recipes and train your employees! read more

I am in town from out of state and we were super excited to have some of our favorite pizza. We went to the bar to order takeout pizza and have two cocktails while waiting for our order. The staff wasn't friendly and even condescending. I should have checked our pizza before leaving because two out of the three pizzas were not what we ordered. Bummer, because I was taking them to go for a family occasion. Everyone was disappointed. The bill was almost $100 for a for poor experience. I'm from Arizona originally from Springfield, Illinois and I decided I needed a pizza as I was getting into town before I hit my hotel. My go to was always Gabatoni's. I knew they recently sold and not the original owners. I thought I'd still go to try. People said it's still the same pizza I was wrong. Don't waste your time. Pizza is not the same as it used to be Gabatoni's was known for greasy cheesy pizza I got none of that. Bernie's and Betty's was where it's at from an old staple of Springfield. I hope you can get that back, but if they don't, they won't be around their pizza is not the same. Went to grab dinner tonight at Gabatoni's which is under new ownership. Still have the original photos as decor. Food took about an hour to get to the table, the place wasn't even that busy. Waitress, (being nice here) Not Impressed. Food quality to us seemed to be subpar. The pizzas were not hot, like they had been sitting on a warming tray. Overall flavor was dull. The mozzarella cheese was probably imitation as it dis not string as as pulled from the pizza pan. I'll try again in a few months, right now I have zero desire to eat here again. read more

I used to love this place and missed it when we moved. Tonight after helping some family out I got my usual meatball sammich from gabatonis. This sammich use to be stuffed with 3 big ole meatballs. Today I got 2 regular meatballs cut in half and it was cold. I got there within plenty of time to pick it up so that's not the issue. Also all of the other food was hot and fresh. Gabatoni's has always had higher prices than comparable pizza but they've also had some of the best pizza in town. On my most recent visit, I found the prices were higher than even I could justify. I understand prices have gone up with almost everything but our household at least has to consider the value of the food when we go out to eat. For what we ordered to cost roughly $20 more than we could enjoy elsewhere (again, it wouldn't be as good but we would enjoy it), it's much harder to justify the expense. read more

Like others, we wanted to give "new" Gabatoni's a try. Having grown up in Springfield, I have many fond memories of "old" Gabatoni's having the best pizza in town. Our server had issues from the get go. Party of two, two simple house salads to start. She forgot one and had the dressing wrong for both. We sat down at 6:00 pm and did not have pizza until 7:45. After repeated "oh, we are putting your pizza in now" and "oh, the kitchen is working on it" statements from a variety of wait staff. Tables of large parties around us who were seated significantly after us had been served, finished and left by the time we finally got our pizza. The pizza we finally received was tasteless, flavorless, scant on toppings, and unremarkable. I have had frozen pizza that was more tasty. If I'm going to wait more than an hour for pizza, it had better be the best pizza ever. This was not. We will not go back. Poor service, poor quality and a poor dining experience.
