Unfortunately this has always been a favorite for pizza. Last time we ordered several months ago there were hardly any toppings and definitely lacked flavor. We decided to give it another try tonight. Big mistake. again the toppings were very sparse and the sauce tasted awful. i hate to say but it will be a long time until I go back, if ever. I'd been craving good walleye since moving back to the area after 17 years in Oklahoma where they've never heard of it. Boy did I come to the right place! Hadn't been here in decades and the exterior is still misleading for what's inside! Great service, excellent food, clean, classy atmosphere. Hands down some of the WORST pizza we have ever eaten. We ordered the thin and crispy with Pepperoni, Sausage, and Mushrooms. There were only a few other customers but our pizza took the best part of 45 minutes to arrive. It was not worth the wait. It was so greasy the toppings kept sliding off the pizza. My fiancé and I stopped on by Mario's to use the 217 Gift Certificate I won and because we both love Italian! This was out first time here and I was shocked at how large the inside was; could easily host a 50 person party here. Our server was extremely pleasant, even with the time of our arrival near the latter part of her shift and on a slow, rain soaked Saturday. On to the food and why I am at 3*, closer to 3.5...I ordered a medium pizza, she ordered the lasagna with side salad. I am typically the one who is more critical when evaluating but shockingly tonight it was all her. She did not like the salad at all and thought it had an unclean/chemical taste and the lasagna was okay but nothing to brag about. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I loved my pizza; double olives, green peppers, pepperoni and their version of Italian sausage. I had plenty for leftovers, they were heavy on toppings and per usual, no cheese for me and the chef nailed it correctly! Overall, your average Italian/sports bar style pizza place and right off of I55. read more

We love Mario's as a local favorite. Service and food are always predictably good. Large restaurant so there is rarely a wait. Large menu, with lots to choose from. Honestly, we have never had a bad meal here. Their portobello appetizer are the best we've ever had. Nobody makes them as tender yet crunchy as Mario's can. They come with ranch and bistro sauce. We forgo the ranch, opting for the spicier bistro sauce. Their house salad, with their homemade creamy Italian dressing is wonderful. Big salad, with good toppings. They offer tortellini soup as an option to salad. My sons and several friends rave about the tort soup. There are so many great entree options. We don't usually opt for sandwiches because we like their other offerings so well. Their traditional lasagna as well as their seafood lasagna are delicious. They have a wide variety of pastas that you can top with several kinds of sauces as well as extras, like meatballs, sausage, veggies, bacon, etc.. I also really like their Chicken Luigi, which is a chicken breast over fettuccine noodles and broccoli, topped with cheese and Alfredo sauce. All of their portions are large and we almost always go home with leftovers. They also gave good, thin crust pizza, though we always order it well done to get a crisper crust. They also have a great lunch buffet M-F. They rotate different pasta and pizza options each day, which go along with a big variety of salad options, as well as soups and nachos. Lunch is always busy. The staff here is always so nice and accommodating. We never feel neglected. They also offer carry out and have a convenient drive-up window. I love that we have had this great hometown restaurant for so long. I hope they stay forever! read more

Stepping into Mario's is like going back in time 40-50 years. Wood-paneled walls, indoor/outdoor carpet and tile floors, Naugahyde booths, wood high top bar tables, disco music, and Tombstone Pizza--the kind served in taverns where food is an afterthought to drink. If Mario's intended to create a retro attitude that would be one thing. The feeling, though, is that it just got stuck in the 70s. For a place that has pizza in its name I expected better. The thin crust pizza was no better than supermarket frozen food quality. I arrived to find a well stocked lunch buffet: three greens salads, a couple of pasta salads and soups, build your own nachos, 2 spaghetti options, garlic bread, and 4-5 pizzas besides other items. Nothing stood out and all I tried tasted like not much care had been given to the preparation. A Caesar salad had way too much dressing, tortellini soup was over seasoned with pepper, tortilla chips were fresh from the grocer's shelf. The list goes on like that. Mario's, however, did provide good service and kept the steady blue collar crowd and golfers from across the street happy. read more

The best pizza in Springfield. The sauce whether it be on the pizza, meatball sandwiches or pasta is really delicious. The salads aren't chintzy either like some restaurants. Everyone is so nice and friendly. Don't overlook this place. You won't be sorry. read more

Lunch buffet: For my money, the olive medley saves the salad bar. If that's still offered, I'd go just for that. An oily vinegary olivey Italian salad. The pizza and pasta buffet... I don't care for it. Pasta, in my book, is just empty-calorie delivery vessels for sauce, so that sauce should be stellar. Unfortunately, for me, the sauce is not worth the pasta calories. The pizza is thin crust, which can be fantastic, but my main hesitation here is that they are dry. The toppings aren't terrible, but they could really benefit from a well-spiced and slightly wetter red sauce. As it is, the slices are dry and the flavors are dull. I give it credit for being a Springfield institution, rich in ambience from a bygone era. But I've got to rate the food on its own. read more

I took my 85 yr old Alzheimer's mother to Mario's for lunch since she is not able to get out much anymore. Was greeted by the manager who walked quickly to a table at the back of the restaurant. My mother walked with a slow shuffling gait. The manager told us 3 times "Your table is over here" but would not assist me in helping my mom walk. She even said "You could help me to the table", he grinned and stated "it's over here", never assisted us. When I paid the bill I thanked him for the assistance he gave to me and my mother getting to our table. His comment was "she never asked for help". I was livid. After a long day at a wrestling tournament, I wanted to sit down and enjoy a wonderful meal. However, that was not the case. The salmon on my sandwich was till partly frozen and served on a dirty plate (crusted ketchup on the bottom and the rim). My friend's chicken strips were still raw and my other friend's burger was cold and spongy. The waitress was consistently forgetting what we ordered and the fries were burnt and hard. My girlfriend and I stopped by this place on out way back from a long road trip, it's just a couple minutes off I-55 so the location is pretty convenient. The place was pretty full when we went which to me was a good sign that the food was good. The pizza was delicious, and the toasted ravioli were amazing. The service however was a little lacking.. Our waitress barely made eye contact and was overall pretty short with us. It also didn't help that she pretty much just threw our pizza tray down in front of us on the table. We also saw our waitress was very rude with some elderly guests near by us. It wasn't exactly the kind of service you'd like after 8 hours of driving. I usually make an effort to tip, but with this service, or really lack thereof, I didn't feel bad not leaving anything. In conclusion, Mario's is a great place to grab some really good reasonably priced Italian food in the Springfield area, but our experience with the waitress is whats giving this place 3 stars. read more

I don't even know where to start. I walk in and BLAM! I'm greater with video gaming as well as beautiful scenery. I sit down in the most comfortable seat in the world inside of the golf room. This is my 2nd time at this restaurant. The first time was a year ago. We ordered a pizza and the crust was awful. This time I ordered a beef poor boy sandwich and onion rings. The sandwich was extremely dry and the bun was ice cold. The onion rings were obviously frozen and hard as a rock and flavorless. Feels like you've stepped into a 70's mafia movie with dark outdated decor. I was with a large group (in the middle) and they forgot to bring my salad. We had to remind the waiter twice, then he had it wrong and had to send it back. By the time entrees started making it out it had been over an hour (and not a single refill on our drinks) and several of us had to get our meals in to-go containers as we had other things to get done. Went to Mario's last night after a Springfield Sliders game. Considering it was the 3rd of July, the restaurant was not busy at all. We were quickly seated. Our waitress came to us quickly and took our drink orders. Service was great overall. For starters, we ordered a house salad. For our meal, we ordered the XL Mario's special pizza, which was sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, and onions. The pizza was thin and crispy, which was excellent. Overall, if you're in the area and looking for an excellent pizza (haven't tried their other food yet...) Mario's is an excellent choice. read more

I have driven by this place for 20 years. Yelp gave me the courage to stop in with my wife and 11/14 year old boys after the Cirque Du Soleil show Yelp was right again Simple place with good service and great pizza. We had the toasted ravioli and fried zucchini for apps. I would rank them as average, but fine. We split a 16 inch pizza 3 ways. Veggie on half. The other half was split between Mario's special and cheese. All four of us left happy. In fact, the 14 year old wanted to know when we were going back to Springfield for a return trip. read more

A Springfield tradition. For as long as I can remember, we have celebrated every family birthday at Mario's. Their food is excellent, always consistent and the portions are generous. My personal favorite is the rigatoni with meat sauce. The sauce is the perfect combo of sweet and savory. This is one of the only places in town where the food tastes exactly the same if you eat in or get it to go. The staff is friendly, always going out of their way to accommodate our larger groups by placing us in a private room free of charge. We love Mario's! read more

I'm actually quite surprised I don't already see a review for this place. I tend to rate italian places by how good the lasagna is. This place...EXCELLENT. I don't believe I've had anything bad from this place. Excellent lasagna, excellent soups. They'll even mix up the sauces in whatever configuration you want generally. They don't like modifying their "tour of italy" type meals. You can sometimes get them to do it..but don't count on it. Other than that, great food, full bar, good service. I came out here to visit and just so happen to see this place and wanted to check it out and I highly DO NOT recommend this place. It was one of the worst Italian restaurants I have ever been to. I ordered tortellini with Southwest Chipotle sauce and when I received my order it was swimming in a bowl of sauce. My boyfriend and I were disgusted by how our food looked and the pasta and sauce had no flavor. My husband and I stopped in to Mario's for dinner on our way home from Memphis. It's a long-standing, family-run, non-fussy establishment, so they must be doing something right. My husband had eaten there previously and had the pizza which he said was good. Thin (but not cracker thin) crust, a good pizza sauce, not greasy, good mozzarella (but not too overly cheesy), and plentiful toppings. Most of the patrons on this evening were enjoying pizza. I wanted pasta, but am pretty picky when it comes to good meat sauce. On this visit, my first, he got spaghetti and I got cheese ravioli; both with meat sauce. Our friendly waitress served us the standard dinner salad (the house made Caesar dressing is good) along with a boat containing one pre-made breadstick and some garlic bread. The breadstick was nothing special, but the garlic bread was yummy--sesame seed topped Italian crusty bread with just the right amount of butter, garlic/oregano. Pasta dishes arrived and we were not disappointed with the meat sauce. Not too tomatoey, loaded with finely ground meat-hearty, rich, flavorful. The pasta wasn't homemade (which we certainly weren't expecting), but was done well and was a nice portion of each. I would happily return and would gladly recommend to others in the area. read more

I'm embarrassed for them - that's how BAD their food is. We went in to try something different than the usual horseshoe/bar joint. I love lasagna, a true Italian dish, and it was the special that night! My fiance got the meat lasagna, & I got the vegetable lasagna. BOTH dishes were absolutely disgusting! The veggie lasagna literally had what looked & tasted like a bag of frozen vegetables dumped on it, & covered in that cheap & nasty Mama Cozi Aldi spaghetti sauce. The meat lasagna was no better... I would have preferred Stoffer's! Will not be returning to this dump. read more

Their lasagna is fantastic!! My wife likes another one from a different place that is mainly a cheese lasagna but every time I go for a take-out, I also order from this place for my lasagna ... This means 'yes' I drive to two places for the take-out but it's that good!! Their lasagna has a little bit of a sausage kick that really gives it a ton of flavor!! I went to the one on Mansion Road. I was expecting more out of this place since it was touted as a great buffet. The buffet did offer a good selection of pasta, pasta salads and pizza. I ordered take-out from here to bring back to my hotel room. I only looked at the menu on their website and then called in my order so I can't comment on anything inside. The person taking my order was quite perky and friendly. It took 20 minutes to prepare the pizza and they stated it would be at the drive-through window... I figured I would find it when I got there. I had to wait in the parking lot about 10 minutes for my 20 minutes to be up. I then drove to the drive-through which was a window in the back.... just like a window in a house. It made me chuckle a little, but I also thought how brilliant it was and so convenient for me not to have to go inside to get my pizza. The pizza was good. I got sausage and mushroom. There was plenty of toppings and the mushrooms were fresh, not canned (yuck)... so that was excellent! The crust was thin, not super-thin, it held the piece when you picked it up, but certainly not thick. It was cut in squares so if that's not your thing ask for something different when you order.
