Fuzzy's "hand-squeezed" hush puppies set the standard. I lived in Mayodan ages 0-4 and have memories of Fuzzy's. I'll never forget the first time I ate elsewhere and was given round hush puppies - what are these?!! 50 years later they still smack! Chopped BBQ is on point, my husband had the okra and slaw and said they were very good. Friendly service, reasonably priced. What's not to love!? My girlfriend and I have done 12 of the 20 stops on the NC Historic BBQ trail. We made a trip to Madison while hiking in the area to hit Fuzzy's. The food was decent. We both enjoyed our meals, but the flavor doesn't beat out some of our favorites on the trail so far. The finger long hush puppies, which tasted like any other hush puppy, are an entertaining gimmick that makes the place memorable. And the ambience of an old school diner was something that will stick with us as well. Is it worth an hour drive like some places on the NC BBQ trail? Definitely not. I can say if I was a local I would hit up the restaurant often though because the meal was tasty. read more

We tried Fuzzy's takeout for a Sunday lunch during a long-weekend in Stoneville. The reason this isn't a 4-star review is simple: execution matters. The red slaw was the highlight of the meal: tart and full of flavor to compliment the Piedmont-style pork. The pork was flavorful and had a bit of smoke flavor, but was somewhat dry and served as a "pork clump" that I had to tear apart with my fork. It was good, but when sauced and eaten with the slaw, it improved substantially. The hush puppies and fries were a big, fat failure because both were undercooked and served cold. If the hush puppies had been served hot and cooked until they were crispy, I think they would have been outstanding, with the chopped onion attenuating the flavor instead of just being a little piece of slimy texture. The fries were just not cooked long enough and still had a starchy texture. Yuck. After placing my order, I noticed that the kitchen staff were just standing around talking. If they had been focused on serving BBQ in non-clump form and attempting to serve hot, crispy hush puppies and fries, then Fuzzy's would have definitely rated 4-stars instead of this 3-star rating. Fuzzy's is a classic NC BBQ joint. Nothing fancy by any means. They let the pork do the talking. Fuzzy's has been cooking Piedmont style BBQ over hickory wood since 1954. Fuzzy's is on the Bar-B-Que trail for a good reason. Stop in for a sandwich, hot dog, or banana pudding and experience "the Good 'Ol Days." read more

Kids: I eat Q. I dream Q. Every year, my two brothers and I get in a rental Mustang convertible and drive until we see a pig on a sign. We pull over, get out, eat Q, get back in and drive. I like my Q. Brisket or pulled pork especially. The is good Q. Nice place, good sauce, plenty of everything and the Q itself was moist and tasty. Smoke ring where it should be. Tangy and sweet. Unsweetened tea and life is good. Whoever is telling you not to order the mozzarella sticks here is missing the point. Don't order the chocolate soufflé here, either. That's not what this is about. It's about pleasant staff bringing good Q in a clean place at good prices. It's my second time here and I will be happy to get a third. read more

We found Fuzzy's BBQ on the NC BBQ Trail. We read some mixed reviews so we're unsure what to expect. Our experience was fantastic & reminiscent of BBQ restaurants of 40 years ago. The restaurant is plain inside & out, but there is a warmth inside that makes you feel like you are at home. They are as much a southern country restaurant as the are a BBQ restaurant. We had a BBQ plate with crinkle cut fries & fried okra. The BBQ was juicy & came out without sauce. They provided us with a home-made warm sauce to add as desired. The sauce was very good... vinegar, tomato sauce/ketchup & peppers. It was not too spicy just perfect. The okra was made in-house. My son had a BBQ sandwich with fries. He enjoyed. My wife had a fried chicken filet sandwich & fried squash. She loved it. The sandwich had a whole filleted chicken breast likely deep fried. I tried it & would order if I could get past the fine BBQ. The squash was also good. The service was some of the best southern hospitality I have experienced in a while. I would highly recommend you seek out & try their food!!!! You read more

The sliced barbecue is pretty good, it is tender and has a zippy sauce. The slices used to be a lot thicker. Would not recommend the mozzarella sticks, they are very generic. The hush puppies are yummy. Our server was attentive and pleasant. read more

Began eating here when it Was Fuzzy Nelson's place. In the fifties. Was so good that in the seventies Fuzzy's was a feature in NYC. Last couple of time was mediocre at best. But appreciations change with travel and time. Back today, "mushy pork on a bun." Super hot onion rings from a bag. Coke. $9.56. Could have driven to Reidsville (5more miles). Short Sugars. Best. One of NC's oldest BBQ smokehouses, owned by one of my cousins until recently, produced some of the tastiest BBQ in the Piedmont.

The place was LOADED with flies...I understand you can't control some of them but there were DOZENS of flies... Probably 10 around my table alone. The cabbage in the slaw was definitely old... On the floor heading to the bathroom, there was spilled food that had definitely been there a longggggg time cuz it was dried in place. BBQ is nothing special. I am from Texas, so Carolina barbecue isn't exactly what I grew up on. Fuzzy's barbecue consists entirely of 1 offering - soggy pulled pork with sweet/sour sauce. No ribs, no sausage, no brisket, no other meats at all. The smoke flavor is so delicate I can't detect it. His tenderloin could have been prepared in a conventional oven. I have had some excellent pulled pork barbecue in North Carolina - but Fuzzy's is a far cry from it. However, Fuzzy does have an extensive non-barbecue menu. the place is friendly, the service is good, and prices are reasonable. I consider Fuzzy's more "American diner" than barbecue. It's BBQ. Chopped pork and sauce. Have picked up take out several times and purchased BBQ for Brunswick stew in a few occasions. Decent sauce. Wife likes the banana pudding; however, their dessert menu varies, so not all desserts are available each day. Overall it is a good BBQ joint. I continue to go there. read more

We made a trip here on a nice sunny day when we were out for a drive and in the mood for Bar-B-Que. It has been a while since we had eaten here and were looking forward to a great meal. Both Mary and I made the same comment after we ate, while it was still good, it wasn't like it had been. We will give it another shot, but I can get better Que without having to drive up to Madison. The service was fine, but they were not as busy as had been expected for a beautiful weekend day at lunchtime. I have been thinking that maybe we are not alone in thinking something has changed. When I was little I could remember going here with my family after church and eating. So after returning after 12 years it really hasn't changed much. From the decor to the tables it's all still there. The portion size of the plates are a little small compared to other BBQ places in NC. The pork is a little mushy and a little to vinegary sauced for my liking. The slaw is really good and can also be bought in the local grocery stores in the surrounding area. The hush puppies are bland and where cooked to crisp. It seems this place is more of a older generation hangout. That being said the bland BBQ hasn't changed for a long time. Worst bbq on our drive. We decided to do a bit of the NC bbq society tour. After driving for 3 hours from the previous bbq place, we were still feeling full, so decided to get take out from Fuzzy's, and then eat it at our hotel. What a mistake. Pulled chicken and sliced pork both were terrible, not thrilled with the coleslaw with bbq sauce mixed in, and hushpuppies that are in a class by themselves. They're spit out of some machine that makes them worm shaped, then fried. Interesting. Ended up throwing it all out. Don't waist your time and money. read more

The plate arrived with stone cold fries and brush puppies. The barbeque was ok but not the excelent smoked pork I remembered. Best item was the hot slaw. The staff is very nice there, but the food is mediocre at best. I have also seen quite a few cleanliness issues, which is a huge negative for any place. They used to have quite a few dishes that were acceptable, but they have all seriously gone down hill. My advice would be to look elsewhere in this locale for good eats. read more

I visited for lunch today. It had been on my radar for several years but hadn't made it. It was well worth it. I had the chopped Q with the regular slaw, mashed potatoes, and hush puppies. It all was very good. The Q was very moist and tender. I really liked the sauce. Not as thick as some Lexington sauces. I topped it of with a bowl of their banana pudding. That was great. I've heard about Fuzzy's for many years and finally found myself in Madison at lunch time. Big disappointment. The chopped pork had only fair flavor and was soggy with liquid that ran all over the French fries (frozen crinkle cut). Hushpuppies were odd stringy things. The service was OK. I should have trusted my concerns about the faded old sign which was probably last painted about 1960 with crooked and unmatched hang-up letters and trash in the parking lot--not much effort to produce a high-quality product in any phase at this place. I suspect a good lunch may be hard to find in Madison, but don't go to Fuzzy's unless you don't mind mediocre. read more

Great food. Great prices. Went here last week for some food and the business seems to be making some changes on the inside and the BBQ has gone back to tasting pit cooked again. Loved this place for years, it seems like its going in a good direction with the changes it's made recently. read more
