This place is a small diner in a historic building next to the railroad. I enjoy all kinds of food including small town gems. I ordered a cheeseburger and felt like I sat down at my granny's table. It was delicious. I also got a vegetable plate with potato cakes, Mac and cheese, creamed potato's, pintos, and fried okra. The creamed potatoes and pintos reminded me of my granny cooking and was really good. The Mac and cheese was creamy and okra thin and crispy. I didn't care for the potato cakes though. The staff is super friendly. I will definitely come back to try other items on the menu. It's a simple cafe with good country food.

What an excellent, living photo of a nostalgic time. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, and great prices. Wendy was a pleasure to talk to and visit with. She shared the history of the restaurant and about her grandfather, who established the place in the 50s. Our favorite kind of place!

This place is beyond retro, beyond throw back - this is a small town diner at its unchanged, unrepented best - this is Green Acres meets Mayberry - they've been operating in this building since 1957. The exterior is small and worn, the interior equally worn, with hand written signs, NASCAR memoribilia on the walls (Dale Sr in particular), a mounted deer head, and dim lighting. They serve breakfast all day (50 cents more after 11AM) with most of the usual items available - and a few not so common combinations. You can have either bologna, weiners, or brains with your eggs, but neither liver pudding or liver mush is available. They serve a few plate lunches (meat & veggies), platters (chicken nuggets, chopped BBQ, hamburger steak, hot roast beef, roast turkey, ribeye & t-bone steak, & seafood items), and a large variety of sandwiches, including a Bread Burger (a little meat & dough fried) all the way for $1.40. If you try the Hamburger Steak, gets FFs & have them put gravy on everything. The Cheeseburger ($3.50) is very, very nice - larger than that you see in many diners, nice little touch of grease to it, full of flavor - try it with just mayo & pickles! The Hot Dog (all the way for $1.40) is also very, very good - neon red weiner, soft bun, and great chili - the recipe for this chili is from the original owner, Bill Woods. The hamburger is boiled, rather than browned, making the texture a little "softer" than most hot dog chilis. The FFs are good, the Onion Rings, not so much. The Chopped BBQ is a commercial purchased product - I'd pass. If you go, Homer Woods and his folks will check to see that you are being taken care of. Enjoy the food, appreciate the environment, watch the folks who come and go - this is an experience.

I hate to say this, but the truth must be told. Based on other reviews, I had the highest of high hopes for this place. But I was sorely disappointed. Let me say first, though, that the people who work here are very nice and the price you pay is very low. Unfortunately, the low price is reflected in the quality of the food. It's not that it tastes bad, but it is just incredibly bland. Bland city, man. I got a fresh cheeseburger and it was just OK, with scarce toppings and no flavor. Bland. The hot dog was even worse, with the dog having no taste, the slaw being too sweet, and the chili...how do I adequately convey how bland this chili was? It was dry and tasteless. I'm not exaggerating: nary a trace of chili seasoning anywhere. Fries were decent. No fountain drinks, so I had sweet tea, which was good.

Simply put, an institution. Nearly everything is made from scratch, from the daily beans specials on the board to the depression era dough burger, which is a lil hamburger mixed with bread and deep fried, a leftover reminder of the meat rationing for the war. Everything is phenomenal down to the people, especially the people who serve you with and smile. The breakfast here especially stands out. And the lunch. Be sure to get the potatoe cakes if they have them. Ya hear?

I always order the fluffy on GF with no cheese, and he always orders the Italian on GF with no cheese. There is cross contamination, so if you are celiac, you can ask them to change gloves, use a clean knife, and keep your sandwich away from the others. We have almost never received the correct order without cheese the first time, but they don't make a fuss when asked to remake the sandwiches, and they are very apologetic. These sandwiches are generous with the meat and other fillings, and the pizza-crust-as-bread works so well. We also get their delicious potato salad with our sandwiches. The seating area is not huge, maybe ten tables, but we've never had to wait for one, and we often take our order to go. The restaurant is clean, and parking is fairly convenient. Even with the issue of having to remake sandwiches, I still rate Blake's a solid five star. It's consistently delicious, and I like supporting a small business in my home community.

My husband and I were in downtown Greensboro on a Saturday afternoon and decided to hit this place up for lunch. When they called the place The Bodega, they really mean it's a bodega. The cashier brought our sandwiches out about 10 minutes after ordering. I ordered the Turkey Caesar. It had turkey, shaved parmesan, marinated cherry tomato, house-made Caesar dressing, onion, and romaine lettuce in an 8" sandwich roll. It was a little pricey at $15, but it was worth the splurge. The dressing and parmesan cheese were unbelievable! Since this is in downtown Greensboro, there is no dedicated parking lot but we easily found street parking nearby. On the first visit, the Chicago dog was sub-par, but that was my partner's order and I don't remember the details. I just remember she said she wouldn't order it again. On today's visit, I ordered a meatball parm sandwich. It was cloyingly sweet - both the meatballs and the tomato sauce were unappetizing, and I could only manage to stand eating a bit of it. My partner ordered a side of corned beef hash. It turned up in a little paper tray with some dry shredded corned beef sprinkled on top of some home fry potatoes - just basic cubed potatoes and some beef shreds on top. That's it. It didn't feel like any corned beef hash we had ever seen. And we paid extra for a fried egg that didn't make it onto the dish. Of course when we pointed this out, it was quickly cooked up separately and brought to the table, so no problems again with the service or resolving the issue. Also be warned that Thursday nights from 6-8pm they run a music trivia game that blasts music loudly throughout the large dining space, completely surrounded by reflective surfaces. It was so loud and obnoxious that it made conversation impossible and drove us outside. I wish I could report a better experience. We need more quality delis around here!
