Down from Portland Oregon on a family vacation, and we're staying at Dreams Playa Mujeres.
Tonight, the first night of our stay, we hit Fusion, an Asian/Japanese/Fusion restaurant. In addition to normal table seating, they also do Teppan (where everyone sits around a communal grill and gets entertained by the chef). We opted to sit at a table.
We ordered a round of small plates. Among them, the Peruvian Ceviche, Tuna Maki (rolls), Tuna Tataki (seared tuna), and a sliced scallop dish.
Okay, sometimes writing a review is tough, because in some ways, you have to grade on a curve. Down here in Mexico, "Asian Fusion" means something quite different from Asian Fusion up in Portland.
For the area, the food was decent. The Maki (rolled sushi) all had mayo or spicy mayo on it (which I dislike, as it masks the fish's flavor) but the rice and fish were good overall.
We also tried the scallop dish, as well as the thinly sliced salmon and tuna Tataki. To my palette, the fish was flavorless--the only flavors on the plate were sesame oil and julienne marinated veggies. I was unimpressed when comparing it to many of the Japanese dishes we have back home, but for the area, it was above average.
By far, the hit of the night was the Peruvian Ceviche. Tender whitefish (I'm guessing Ono) bathing in a lime and sesame Leche de Tigre, it was fantastic and everything I hoped to find in a ceviche down here. At least at Fusion, it's clear that when you order foods that are closer to indigenous, they get a lot better. I just haven't found a whole lot of places down here that can pull off impressive Asian Fusion.
Was I disappointed here? No. I got exactly what I'd expected and expectations were met. If Fusion had been in Portland (where the fusion competition is fierce and Michelin stars flow freely), I would have rated it 2*. But for here, 3*, A-OK. read more
