Athens Christian Preparatory Academy - Chapel, that used to be horse stables

I visited this campus because they had an Open House, which they advertised as an event on…read moreFacebook. I didn't know the best place to park, since this was my first visit since they moved to this campus. Disclaimer: my sister-in-law used to teach history at this school, while my brother coached volleyball and may have taught a Bible class. But they haven't been with this school since before I moved to Athens in 2014. But back when they used to work for this school, I got to meet some of the faculty and staff members, so I know some of them. This school used to "float around" and make their home in various church buildings before they moved to this location (a piece of ranch land). So they have really grown up since I have seen them! Currently, they have 60-70ish students from 7th-12th grades. Their "band" is a worship-leading band for their chapel services, and I'd love to sit in on a chapel service sometime! I like that it seems they welcome students of various denominations (the Christian School I attended was run by predominantly members of the Church Of Christ, which meant that our chapel services were accapella, but they welcomed students of other denominations). They also wear some sharp uniforms, the more formal version of which reminds me of what they wore in the "Harry Potter" movies, but most days of the week they wear more casual uniforms, as some current students (from the House of Gryffendor", Lol!) told me. I was also excited to learn that they had a cooking class, that was all year long (not just 1 semester), where they also learned how to grill food on backyard grills. Their library also has a small "coffee shop" with it, where the students can brew their own coffee while they study (that was the impression I got). There is also a small swimming pool right behind the Administration Building, which would be good for back-to-school or end-of-year picnic parties, or maybe even use it for a shallow-water aerobics class. During the summer, they also have a "Popsicle Summer Camp", full of different elective camp sessions for kids ages 5-13. If I had kids in those ages, I would definitely encourage them to go to a camp session or two. And if I had kids between 7th-12th grades, I would definitely encourage them to come to this school!

Chef Mike was amazing from my first reach out email to saying goodbye after a few hours of laughter, cooking, and fun. Chef Brooke and Chef Richard were also just as engaging, energetic, friendly, and helpful. The classes are set up to be approachable and fun for all skill levels. Everyone in our group has been raving about the experience all weekend and can't wait to attend the public classes. I was so proud to show off CCK and know we have a business of this caliber in our community. RUN, don't walk, to their next class!

They do a whole lot more than just teach some recipes. They created a really fun experience that my guests could feel totally part of. They were organized and well prepared. When we arrived the prep stations were ready to go and they had all of the ingredients and tools ready to grab at the right time. Mike helped me design a delicious custom 5 course menu. The recipes were delicious. Everything was timed to be ready in stages. Even my guests who typically don't like to cook got into the action. It was a totally fun experience. We are looking for another time to plan another event.

With all of the amazing restaurants in town, I find little time or even desire to cook at home, but…read moreI was lured by the idea of creating my own Moroccan masterpiece through the guidance of Kitchenware on the Square's Thursday night cooking class. They posted a tantalizing menu on a Facebook event that had me looking for a way to sign up. Unfortunately there was no way to register for the class online through their website. Matter of fact, the website didn't provide any information about the class. I called the store phone number during business hours several times, but no one answered. Finally I left a Facebook message, and someone eventually replied and asked me to email to sign up. I would highly recommend the store find a way to streamline this process. There are so many online ticketing companies out there that will allow people to sign up and prepay for the event. A customer should never have to work so hard to register. My persistence was due to the tasty and possibly tricky-to-make menu items posted. There was the promise of vegetable samosas with a cucumber sauce and chicken tagine. Unfortunately we didn't get to make the samosas. They had already wrapped the cooked vegetables in phyllo dough and baked them. We got to make the cucumber sauce that topped the samosa and eat the savory creation, but I was disappointed that we didn't get a chance to make this staple appetizer. Our class of eight each had their own cooking station with a cutting board, knife, spatula, ramekins, pre-measured ingredients, cooktop, etc. Aprons were provided so that we would go home with food in our belly as opposed to on it. This was a hands on class where we were able to cut, chop, mix and stir. We were also offered a glass of merlot and a hot toddy to savor during the class. Sadly there was no tagine pot. This was another letdown. I had really hoped we would learn to cook with a tagine. They had one on display. Apparently the owner had ordered them, but they didn't arrive in time. Despite this, the final result was delicious. I devoured every last morsel of my chicken curry poured over rice with a side of wheat pita bread. Dessert was a light, healthy mix of orange slices and dates. The best parts of the class were: 1) Having our own work stations where we could get our hands dirty 2) Being able to drink wine during the evening 3) Asking questions of our chefs who gave us several tidbits we could use to entertain our friends and family later 4) Eating our masterpiece at the conclusion of the class without having to do the cleanup! Would I take another class here? Maybe, but unlikely. The price was steep ($69) per person. For people who already have a little bit of know-how in the kitchen, this class would have been a snoozer, but for those foraging into this area for the first time, the hand holding through the class is definitely a way to build ones cooking confidence.
