I grew up watching Stephen Yan from the cooking show, Wok with Yan, with my mom. My mom religiously…read morewrote down his recipes with a blue pen in her Sunlife coiled notebook that the company used to give out yearly. She'd then make these recipes. It occurred to me recently that maybe my punny nature and love for good food happened because of this man. I'm glad. Stephen Yan kept a low profile for roughly thirty years. He was lured out of British Columbia by RetroKid. They did a collaboration on Wok with Yan clothing and merchandise. They also held a meet-and-greet event a few Saturdays ago at The Royal Cinema. Here's what I don't recommend doing. The night before, I attended a Billy Idol concert. I did a lot of walking and dancing. I had to get up early to get to Little Italy by 10 am for this event I felt it all, but it was worth all of it. I parked in a small Green P parking lot off Clinton Street, which was steps away from this venue. I then had to line up to get into the theatre. Organizers did a great job finding our names on the list, getting wristbands based on the type of ticket and perk package that you had ordered, and getting the proper t-shirt size and branded chopsticks that you desired. It was great. Staff were helpful. I needed to use the washroom. Washrooms were upstairs. It's an older theatre, so it's a flight of stairs up. The washrooms were clean and surprisingly spacious. We could sit wherever, except the VIP area, unless you were one. I was content in my comfy chair. Pay Chen, a local foodie, welcomed us. She provided a summary of Yan's accomplishments and introduced Steve, co-founder of RetroKid. I love the merchandise that this company creates, from Sesame Street, to Stephen Yan. This event allowed us to buy Wok with Yan merchandise before it went public to the world after the event. Yan was introduced and got quite the standing ovation. It was great seeing him. He can still talk up a storm. He was his usual punny self. It was nice to hear what he has been up to. I was thrilled to be there. Afterwards, we could meet him and get a photo taken with him. He didn't do autographs. The lineup was long. I didn't mind the wait. My legs were jelly from the concert. I spoke to a staffer just before we hit the stage. There were steps, but no handrails. My legs were so tired that I asked if he could be my support as I went up the stairs. Yep, they were that heavy. He didn't mind. He was thrilled that I saw Billy Idol and had a great time. I met Stephen Yan -- the legend. A staffer took my phone and I got to spend a brief moment with him. He greeted me in Cantonese, asking how I was. I responded in Cantonese in the same language. The moment was magical. He was everything you hoped that he'd be. He was warm and welcoming. He was funny. He was kind and compassionate. The woman took photos of us in a hug and in conversation, and in a few poses. I shared my story of my mom and I watching his shows, and my mom jotting down all his recipes. He seemed genuinely touched and asked how my mom was. Very Chinese. Incredibly cool. I did buy some merchandise. I got a t-shirt and some buttons with his punny sayings on aprons. It was highly organized. You basically checked what you wanted on an order from. I didn't have a pen, so I asked to use a nice woman's pen who was sitting in front of me. She asked me if I was Yan's daughter. It was such a weird question at first. It was quite flattering in hindsight. You basically wrote your name on the order form and paid. I used a credit card. I then waited patiently for my name to be called. I got my order and was happy. The place had overstock on Wok with Yan chopsticks. I ended up getting another pair. Yay! I have a set. I like that you can get hot food, cold beer, and snacks at the concession stands. I saw someone with a hot dog and popcorn while I was waiting to meet Yan. The selection of wine, pasta, sardines, St. Viateur bagels, and more was impressive. You can actually dine on the patio here. It's a charming theatre. It now has a special place in my heart. I met Stephen Yan here. (350)

The education programs and classes are well run and led by local professionals. There are several spaces in and around the theatre for classes and performances including a large theatre, black box theatre, and multi-classroom space across the street. I've even seen several outdoor site specific performances. Theatre Aquarius has served as a hub for the Hamilton Fringe Festival and is a wonderful creative place for community. Can't wait to see and experience more.

It was a wonderful incredible show!! We were so impressed with every aspect of the show; the lighting, the stage sets, the music, actors, singing and dancing productions; the entire show was amazing. In this day and age of techno mumbo jumbo entertainment; it is truly refreshing and uplifting to watch a production put on by such a wonderful group of entertainers. As I watched the production, I got the overwhelming sense that each and every performer was truly passionate about the performance. They absolutely loved what they were doing and this enthusiasm truly contributed to making this production an absolutely wonderful experience for everyone involved; from the entertainers to the production staff, the musicians and theatre staff and of course for us the audience. I will certainly be watching for future productions that I want to see with my family and buying tickets again. Thank you to everyone at Theatre Aquarius for a beautifully memorable evening!! I look forward to my next show. :)

Last Saturday, I wanted to see my first movie at a theatre since February 2020. I wouldn't classify…read moremyself as a regular movie person, but I do miss the entire experience of seeing a flick on a big screen, slurping back a drink, and stuffing myself with some snack. My original plan was to see No Time to Die, which is the newest 007 movie and the last for Daniel Craig, at Cineplex Eglinton Town Centre. There were two theatres showing matinees at 2:30 pm. It was too good to be true, though. I arrived before 2 pm and these times were gone. The next showtime was 3:20 pm. I did a search on my phone for other theatres with closer start times. This Cineplex in the Beaches had a start time of 2:55 pm. I have never been there before. And so, I picked up and left on a rainy afternoon. I'm glad that I didn't buy a ticket online for Cineplex Eglinton. I went ahead and did it for Cineplex Beaches. I realized that I had a credit to use up. Yay, almost-free movie! The downside to hitting this cinema is that parking is not free. I did find a Green P lot behind this theatre that offered afternoon parking till 6 pm for $3. Perfect! I paid using my Green P app and was done. I walked over to the entrance that faces the Country Style donuts that I first visited on a school trip when I was four years old. I grew up in the Beaches. Where this theatre sits used to be Greenwood Racetrack. Yep, I hadn't been here in eons. I barely remember that racetrack experience, as I was a little kid with my dad. Although the signage says Alliance Cinemas, it is indeed a part of the Cineplex umbrella. I walked in and got a super helpful man who greeted me. I am so out of it as a movie-goer these days. He let me know that I needed to show my ID and proof of vaccination. I got the latter out first. The QR code on my screenshot worked like a charm. I used my driver's licence for the former and all was great. He let me know that I needed to have my movie ticket scanned by the next person. I visited the women's washroom first. My movie had a playing time of 2 hours and 48 minutes. The washroom was exceptionally clean. Everything was nicely stocked and in working order. I was impressed. I hadn't had lunch. I went with my go-to meal at Cineplex, which is the hot dog and nachos combo. I had an efficient man take my order. I got my Scene points barcode scanned and paid with a credit card. He had my order completed quickly, but didn't say that it was ready until I saw it on a ledge closer to him than me. I took everything, thanked him, and headed to get my ticket scanned. My Diet Coke was so full that it spilled out from the top when I pulled out my phone. I got my ticket scanned and then headed around to the same place where I had just grabbed napkins and a straw. I wiped my hand down and proceeded to the theatre. I love this movie theatre. It's quiet. I had an entire row to myself. It's clean. The seats are comfortable. I used another seat next to me to put my purse and hoodie there. It was great eating in a movie theatre again. My hot dog was yummy. I got packets of relish and ketchup. I don't remembered getting so many corn chips to dip into my cheese sauce. I spent half the movie breaking each one in half so I could dip them into the cheese. So good! I haven't grown a third arm yet from the liquid cheese. The movie was excellent. It didn't feel like I was there for three hours. I had a wonderful experience and felt safe. Everyone followed rules for wearing face masks and keeping their distance within the theatre. It was another impressive point. Fact: I have seen every Bond flick with Daniel Craig in it. I used the washroom afterwards because I had downed a lot of my massive drink. The washroom's cleanliness continued to earn top marks. I've never been so happy visiting a theatre before. It's the perfect edition to the west side of the Beaches. I'm okay shelling out for parking for such a positive movie-going experience. I'm a fan. It was the perfect place to ease into watching a movie in a theatre again. (413)
