My friend and I have been planning to meet up for a while. Our schedules and her moving to Hamilton this summer had delayed our plan, but we got it together last Saturday. For years, I lived the furthest from the office in our department. Well, that title has been bequeathed to my friend, who lives 60 km from the office. Luckily, we don't need to commute for the rest of 2020 due to the pandemic. If it were a contest, I'd move further east to win... haha! We both love Thai food. I looked at my Yelp bookmarks and suggested that we do takeout from Funky Thai. She liked the name and said, "Let's get funky!" Our plan was to find a park to chat and chow down. She was game. She got to the restaurant a couple of minutes before I did and texted me. I saw the Econo gas station and my eyes immediately looked at all the red signage that Funky Thai had. It's in a completely nondescript corner. I pulled in. There is a patch of road that is gravel. So, if you're turning in too fast, I can predict wiping out when it's slick. I backed into a parking spot next to my friend's car. To see her huge smile again was wonderful. I haven't seen her since I was last in the office back in early March! We walked into the restaurant. It is takeout only. Tables strategically placed next to one another provide a fort-like structure. The woman came over. She was nice. We saw the menu posted on the side. I went with curry pad thai with chicken. You can also do a mix of chicken and beef, and other protein combos for an extra charge. She asked whether I had any allergies, as chopped peanuts go on top of the pad thai. Nope, I was good. This combo came with an appetizer. I chose the veggie spring roll, as did my friend. I asked the woman whether she had any canned drinks. Her response? "Go to the gas station. It's cheaper. It's $1.75 here." Wow! Talk about being honest and promoting Econo Gas. My friend got the pineapple cashew nut fried rice with chicken and beef. It sounded good. Considering that we both did a mini road trip to Oakville, we both needed to use the washroom. You can only use it only if you're a customer. We asked if we could. The woman first went to the washroom to check. She then came back and moved one of the Tetris-like tables away so that my friend could walk over there. Once she came back, it was my turn. The washroom was clean and spacious. My food was ready pretty fast. My friend's took a bit longer. Still, it was fast considering that we were the only folks there. While I was in the washroom, my friend asked the nice woman where we could go to eat lunch. She recommended going down to the waterfront. She said that there were many parks. Nice! We chose Bronte Beach Park and drove over there. Once we found a vacant park bench, we had our late lunch. My friend confessed that she ate her veggie spring roll driving over to the park. I knew that it was yummy just from that admission. The veggie spring roll is amazing. It is jammed full of veggies and glass noodles. It was large, crunchy, and so go with the sweet and sour dipping sauce. I'd come back just for the spring roll alone. My curry pad thai was nicely packed. It looked pretty. It tasted yummy. The noodles were perfect. The curry wasn't spicy. I went with mild, but I would do medium next time. The chicken was white meat, which was tender and yummy. I also got tofu, which was an added bonus. The veggies were delicious. I ate the whole thing. I didn't have a chance to take a photo of my friend's pineapple fried rice. She plowed into it, as she was hungry. It looked amazing. She loved it. I need to order some when I'm in the neighbourhood again. This Thai restaurant also offers Vietnamese food fare. I'd love to try some in future. We both paid using debit. The woman brings the machine to you. This eatery is in such an odd location, but it's definitely worth visiting if you're in Oakville. The service is quick and efficient. I had a great experience. What a hidden gem!And don't be fooled by the outside.So this Thai restaurant is located behind a gas station with no fancy welcoming look, the parking area too is not finished well with stones and gravel. So I came here right after my doctors appointment and decided to get a couple of entrees to try out.I opted to stick with the lunch menu.My order was a spicy Thai basil chicken and glass noodles with vegetables and chicken.Every lunch special comes with a soup or spring roll, I got one of each. The spring roll were absolutely divine much bigger and stuffed well compared to many other Thai restaurant.The hot and sour soup was pretty standard. The main entrees came out within 10-12 minutes after ordering.Both the dishes were so so flavorful and the portions were generous.I also felt that they don't skimp on their meat.Both my entrees were loaded with meat. I ate as much as I could and took the remaining home for dinner.My server was this middle aged gentleman, he was fast and kept checking on me.He also packed my leftovers which I thought was super nice. We came here for my gfs birthday lunch and I've been here on another occasion. It definitely looks like it should be a diner or dive bar based on its location, but once you step inside it's quite nice. We were greeted instantly at the door and were at our seats with water pretty quickly. The severs were very friendly. My gf got the chicken fried rice and I got the lunch special: spring roll and chicken pad thai. It all came pretty quickly. The Pad Thai was pretty great to be honest, I had it about 5-6 months ago and couldn't remember if I liked it, but it was great. The flavour was great, chicken cooked perfectly, all great. Usually I have a complaint, but none this time. The spring rolls were ok, (wheat wrappers also) nothing special. My gf said the rice was great as well. read more

We came by for lunch on Friday and was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant! It looks a little dated and rundown from the exterior but when you walk in, it's completely different, more modern and clean. We got two lunch specials for $10, the satay pad thai and the green curry. Both of them comes with an appetizer (soup, salad or spring roll) and the meal. Such a good deal! We really enjoyed the green curry, not too spicy but lots of coconut flavours and super tender pieces of chicken. They definitely do not skimp out on ingredients! The satay pad thai was so-so. It was lacking a lot of satay flavours but the noodles itself was good. The service was incredibly efficient and the ladies were very friendly. Our total came up to just under $30 (with tax and tips). We would definitely recommend this place and will return. Looking forward to trying out their Vietnamese fare! read more

I'm going to preference this review with I tried some new things and I don't know if it was me or the food. I had the mini shrimp app and was shocked really how small the shrimp where in the wrap. Looks like a salad shrimp... and didn't think they were all that great. Then I had the shrimp paste pad Thai. It was a different flavor. I probably should had stuck with the normal one. So don't take this part of the review with much value. Then I wanted dessert.. I got sticky rice and mango. Now I don't like the sticky Rice that comes with lots of coconut milk on it just too much for me.. so when I saw that I asked for one without me and the guy argued with me that it wasn't a lot. I work nearby so I was so excited to find a Thai resto I could pop in for lunch. All the other reviews mention this but there is a gas station attached to the restaurant. There's plenty of parking spots on the other side of the restaurant. Walking in the restaurant seemed clean and authentic. There were only several tables that were full for lunch so I was quickly seated. There is a lunch special menu ($10) and I ordered the chicken pad thai with level 3 heat and the soup. I took off 1 star because the waitress brought me out a spring roll :( I was a little upset because the spring roll was obviously heated and would be thrown out or served to the next customer so I didn't complain. But the store wasn't busy and there were 3 waitresses so I couldn't blame it on lunch rush error. The pad Thai was generous and I loved how they left their tofu in big chunks. The chicken was overall decent too. However, overall as a dish the plate was only average as it was a little over saucy. I will be back to try their curry! read more

When you're a foodie, you know that the best places to eat are those mom and pop, hole in the wall places. This my friends, is a hole in the wall place and definitely worth venturing out for. I almost didn't want to post this out of fear it would get too popular and too busy. I'll take my chances, like good art - good food should not be hidden. It's a small restaurant by a truck gas stop, but man the food is good. My husband and I get the pad Thai every time and we trade off on the mango chicken stir fry and peanut beef stir fry. The meat is so tender and the food is so flavourful. The dishes come out hot and plentiful. If you're in Oakville and looking for amazing thai, this place is fantastic. Stop by, it is amazing. First time eating in...LESS than impressed. Ordered the curry pad Thai and it had CLEARLY not been cooked fresh and had been sitting out! I don't think when the food is barely warm, anyone would consider otherwise, except for the server who tried to tell me it was in fact hot. My meal was very bland and very dry! Had to ask for hot sauce to help get it down. The server was not pleasant in the least from the beginning. She barely made eye contact and was short and abrupt. One of my favorite restaurants. Their dishes are yummy. Place is on Dundas St by Bronte Road next to gas station. Inside it's very nice and tasteful and clean inside. By far the best Thai/Vietnamese restaurant I've been to in a long time. I always drive by this place and saw a lot of people inside during lunch hours but the exterior didn't seem too inviting (located behind a gas station and the sign seem really outdated). But once I stepped inside I was amazed by the cleanliness and it felt "authentic." We were there for dinner and ordered chicken curry and Vietnamese spring roll as well as wanton soup. The viet spring rolls were absolutely amazing! Different from the typical Thai ones and this one is filled with different ingredients and there were a lot of pieces for the two of us to share. (This reminded me of my fav restaurant I went to long time ago that shut down called "Jasmin rice" across from Sherway gardens). The curry tasted super authentic and I can tell they use different spices and ingredients that separates them from other places. The chicken was so tender and rice was so fluffy and tasty. The wonton soup (small size) was filled with shrimp and meat and was super filling too. For dessert we had the coconut sticky rice with slices of mango. I've had this dessert elsewhere but they tasted way better!! And unique as well. They used black rice and the coconut cream sauce was not overly sweet and the tangy mango perfectly compliments the overall flavour. Although the waitress barely smiled I think she had a dry humour and the other waiter was nice and thoughtful enough to give us takeout boxes for leftover dessert (we were so full) YES I will be back to try other dishes on the menu and the price for dinner was unbelievably cheap so it's a huge plus!! read more

It's a little deceiving from the outside as it has a gas station in front and truck parking lot beside, but the inside is nicely decorated. Highly recommend the shrimp chips, huge in size and spicy peanut sauce has good texture and flavours. We had the Pad Thai and were disappointed that the noodles were so thin and hardly any veggies. I ordered basil beef fried rice for take out, and it was alright. Good amount of rice, and the beef slices were tender. However for a basil fried rice, I'm looking for more basil taste than just five basil leaves in it. I would probably try something else next time but not fried rice. read more

This Thai restaurant is located in an odd spot right beside a gas station but ignore the outward appearance of this place since the food here is really good! I first came here years ago and recently have been here twice in the past 3 months. Their pad thai is really tasty. It's full of that savoury tamarind flavour that pad thai should have and like any other Thai place, you can choose to have it with veggies, chicken or beef. If you get chicken or beef, it's about $3 extra if I remember right. I would also recommend their green curry with veggies here since it has a slight kick to it, it has a good portion of veggies and it comes with rice. Again, you can choose to have chicken or beef instead of just veggies for a few extra dollars. The masaman or golden curry is also good here but milder spice than the green curry. No complaints about the service here as staff are polite and efficient with filling orders and payments at the register. Getting take out from here is also quick - about 20 minutes wait when you call ahead. Tip: Spend $25 or more before taxes and you can get 10% off your order if you pay in cash! There's also a sign at the cash register with this reminder. In terms of parking, there are about 20 parking spots and even though it can get busy here since it seems to be an Oakville fave, I've never had an issue with finding a spot. Do not let the location of this place deter you to try out their food! They have awesome thai/ asian fusion dishes for the location. We ordered take out and were surprised with huge portions! Beyond the reasonable pricing the quality of the food makes this place stand out. Spring Rolls are light and crispy, the curry's are flavorful and the presentation of everything is pretty nice as well. Tip: Got a cold or just like a nice chicken soup? Try the Chicken Pho soup and you'll receive an enormous bowl of chicken soup w/noodles and large pieces of chicken, on the side will be sauces, a fresh chilli and bean sprouts. Overrated. With other Thai restaurants close by I'm not sure why this place has such a high rating. The green curry I ordered was bland, and had very questionable, slimy chicken pieces in it. Vegetables were absent with just two slivers of carrot and too many large inedible chunks of onion. Spicy Thai salad was a mess of cabbage chunks glazed with a type of sweet and sour sauce. Wasn't spicy, and not sure if it counts as Thai either. Dining companion had drunken noodles with beef. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. There were puddles of oil on the bottom of his plate. Service: Cutlery provided for the table had noticeable food residue on it. We ate with the disposable chopsticks. I ordered the green curry with chicken, which was, hands down, the WORST green curry I have ever consumed (something I eat pretty often). Not sure where to start with the chicken - slimy, gummy, fatty clumps floating in flavourless green curry. I can't stress how disappointing this curry sauce is. I've actually made better from grocery store green curry paste. It also had slimy little pieces of tofu, which you don't normally find in green curry and I ended up picking them out. The best part of my meal was the spring rolls, which were very good, but not feeling like they were worth the $20-odd bucks I paid for the full meal. Bottom line: Don't do it!!! Great restaurant - don't let the physical location sway you. I have been there for eat in and have also ordered take-out. The portions are generous and the food is very good. They run a mean take-out business. When we were there, the phone was constantly ringing for take-out orders. When I called for take-out, my order was ready in 10 minutes. Pretty quick!! Excellent green curry chicken and singapore curry noodles. The vietnamese spring rolls were unusual, but tasty. Also recommend the curry chicken fried rice. Was looking for some moderately priced noodles close by and arrived here. Location was a bit bizarrely placed, being next to a gas station and all. I was in Oakville visiting a friend and was craving Thai food. Funky Thai was one of the restaurants that came up on Yelp. I decided to try it and was pleasantly surprised. The inside was decorated very nicely and clean. I was there shortly after lunch had ended, so I ordered from the dinner menu. I was eating alone so I ordered 2 entrees, curry garlic shrimp and the crispy beef strips. Both entrees were very flavorful and I managed to finish both along with some coconut rice. The service was also excellent, my waitress was very attentive, kept checking on me and refilling my water. I would recommend trying this place if you're in the area. It is however in the same parking lot as a gas station so don't let that discourage you from trying this place out! read more

Went here for the first time last weekend and was disappointed with the quality of the food. I ordered a chicken glass noodle style soup even though I wanted a normal bowl of pho which wasn't an option. (It was a cold night and after a workout; I was craving a hardy bowl of pho to satisfy my craving). My boyfriend was coaxed into ordering a soup dish that was super spicy which was out of his level of heat meter. I find there menu selection is more toward the Thai side. The place is clean and friendly so for this reason I would be willing to give this place another try but next time I will order a Thai or Chinese dish instead. Excellent food! Good price. Don't be scared by the gas station next door! This place is fast, and delicious. I've gone solo for linch and felt totally comfortable, and I' e taken a family group with kids and service was excellent. The food was the kind where you eat way past full because it's just so tasty! Tried the Singapore noodles and spring rolls. Noodles were nice and spicy, curry seasoning was prominent but not overpowering. Vermicelli was perfectly cooked and had bite. Portion of chicken provided was ok albeit a bit skimpy--tofu was noticeably absent as well. Spring rolls were just ok. Filling was a bit mushy for my taste. Service was adequate.
