Funky Cow Café was the perfect answer to my desire for a great lunch place close to home. Located on the corner of Hammonton's Bellevue and Central Avenues, it is a bright and cheerful spot with a fun ambiance and great food. I ordered Lola's Cuban, their take on a Cubano and it WAS AMAZING. Delicious pork, ham and the special sauce was great...the waffles used in place of the bread were CRAZY GOOD. They were not heavy, stayed crispy throughout and were perfection. I have to make those at home - they were THAT good. I also had a side order of Lola's Spanish Rice & Beans and it was very good. The coleslaw that came with it was also delicious and I went back to get a quart to take home. I was tempted to get the Trash Bowl Salad which has BBQ pulled pork, lettuce, Lola's rice & beans and their homemade mac & cheese but as I was getting dessert elsewhere, I resisted. I did hear that the Trash Bowl is 'fantastic' so it is on my list to try as well as all of their other menu items. Along with the savory waffle sandwiches, of which there are vegetarian, vegan and GF options; they have a menu of sweet waffles as well and an ice cream bar. I've been eyeing this place for a while. On my latest trip to NJ, I finally checked this place out. The menu is actually pretty small, but the sandwich I got was still good. The Mac and cheese was alright. It wasn't super cheesy. The only issue I really ran into was seating. We had to wait about 5 minutes to sit down as the table needed to be wiped down. It was during their lunch rush, so this is probably why. I would come back to try a few more menu items if I'm back in town again. read more

This came up in Yelp as great for ice cream. We drove 30min out of our way to stop here. My mistake to trust Yelp stars. Parking on street, very close by, was free. Staff was odd for customer service; she didn't give information about toppings, flavors, cone types or really anything at all. Just politely asked what we wanted, and to me, with their quizzical menu and lack of display cones, cups, or any other typical ice cream shop didactics, I clearly needed the low down on how they "do" ice cream. Menu says "market price" for ice cream, really? Is this trying to be cute? Pretentious? Really annoying to have to ask how much it is, with a menu right there. Also, it's SOFT SERVE! Okay? Soft serve and "market price" do not belong together. And at that, they have two flavors of soft serve. Guess which? And the employee didn't explain there are toppings until after she squeezed out our serving, so with no time to think through any topping choices, and the already-soft ice cream melting, of course I wasn't going to add any. It was $5.50 for a small soft serve, and $0.75 per topping, btw, but the "market price" may change. Decor is typical "boutique ice cream parlor" style, bathroom clean. They put FARRRRR more into the overdone design than they put thought into customer-friendly menus or training people-oriented staff. The room was dimly lit, to the point where the back was plain dark during daylight hours, just really weird for an ice cream parlor. More cow noir than funky, I'd say. Glad I supported a local business but I wouldn't go again. 3 stars for the wasted time to get there and the "market price" nonsense. read more

I just hit this place on our way to AC. We had the chicken salad and brisket sandwiches. I think that was the best sandwich I ever had and my buddy said the same about the brisket. The menu was as unique as the name of the restaurant would suggest. The sandwiches we ordered were both served on waffles the likes of which we'd never had and were show stoppers. The only reason my rating isn't higher is a person who i think was a manager positioned herself between my wife and myself and spoke accolades about Funky Cow and their expansion into New York that we ate our whole dishes with company. The food was outstanding. We got the Lola's Cuban, Funk'n Chicken, and BBQ Pork. Since we shared I can say they were all fantastic. Service was great! The hostess was so sweet BUT unfortunately I did not feel safe eating there with celiac disease. Posting this for my severe allergy or celiac people. The hostess didn't know what celiac disease was and the kitchen staff didn't even know if the chicken salad ingredients were gluten free. If I have to tell the kitchen what is gluten free and what isn't then it's not a safe environment for me. They should be properly trained if they are going to be servicing the gluten free community. I went into the funky cow with friends and family yesterday. I was unsure of what I wanted. Ricky (who I later learned is the owner) was there and recommended the chicken salad BLT. He greated us with such love and friendliness it was like a ray of sunshine on an otherwise cold day. Thank goodness for Ricky. His selections were off the hook! My best friend (who never finishes a meal) had the veggie sandwich, she ate the whole thing and kept mentioning it afterwards for at least an hour. Someone ordered the lemon orzo soup (we were not sure who but we didn't care) and it was so stinking good. Lemony goodness and just the right amount of orzo and big pieces of shredded chicken. My niece ordered the trash bowl. The trash bowl was A-MA-ZING! I don't know what kind of magic he did but you would swear that it is sprinkled with fairy dust!! We all tried each other dishes and all you heard were moans of delight when the food hit our mouths. The Chicken salad BLT sandwiches were made on the lightest and crunchiest (and amazing) waffles! I saw the light! This food was so good that I got the church stank face. All I needed to complete the look would be to have a hat and a hanky. Amen and hallelujah! I can't wait to go back. Visited the Funky Cow while on a business trip. I was greeted right away and the nice woman at the counter offered some of the favorites from the menu. I had the brisket sandwich which was served on a light, crispy waffle. This was hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. The food was served quickly and our server was very pleasant. I would foolish not to mention the cleanliness of the establishment. This restaurant is spotless! I visited this gem yesterday, and now I need to spread the word. After dropping our nieces at a cooking class down the block (Kitchen 19), my friend and I spotted this place and decided to treat ourselves. So glad we did! The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, with a blackboard wall and chalk. The decor is overwhelmingly cow-based and is super cute. The staff was helpful and attentive without being overbearing. The coffee comes in one roast (dark), but the real star here is the food. The mainstay of the menu is sandwiches which replace bread with a crunchy, savory waffle (thinner, less doughy than a Belgian one). My friend and I ordered a funk'n chicken and a Lola's Cuban and split. We were far from disappointed. Each sandwich was full of quality meat and a homemade sauce that was so flavorful. Each dish came with homemade slaw. I can't even choose which I liked better (and neither could my friend). They have traditional Belgian waffles with sweet toppings too (like a Nutella s'more one or an apple pie á la mode one), but I was too fulI to try one. It isn't cheap, with the waffles ranging $10-15, but the price is fair. Despite it being a hole in the wall that's a 45-minute drive from my house, I will definitely be back!. P.S. After passing this place so many times a friend and I decided to try it for lunch. They have a choice of savory or sweet waffle dishes and a few other options. I went for the veggie lovers and what I didn't realize was that it came as a sandwich. I thought it was kind of strange at first, waffles used as the bread, but after I bit into it I was hooked. It was so delicious. My friend got the lettuce cups which he enjoyed. I'll definitely be back for that sandwich again. My only complaint would be the limited menu for a pescatarian or vegetarian although they do accommodate both with a veggie sandwich, the udderly vegan sandwich, and a salad. We stopped here because it looked like an ice cream shop. They also served panini-type sandwiches and Mac and cheese, which should have tipped me off that it wasn't an ice cream shop. Their sign said "Homemade Vanilla and Chocolate ice cream." Also another red flag because any place that makes that own ice cream doesn't just make vanilla and chocolate. Behind the counter were two soft serve machines. Again, I should have caught this. So I asked for vanilla ice cream and she served me some soft serve from the machine. My husband got chocolate.
