Fumie's Cakes is an online order bakery without a storefront. Based on older reviews, they did have a storefront previously and sold individual cake slices, but not anymore. From their website, they now sell whole cakes, whole tarts, cupcakes, cookies, and cream puffs. The baker is an East Asian lady. Her cakes are in the "not too sweet" category of desserts. If you like your cakes American sweet, this is NOT the place for you. Ordering was a breeze via the website. Deciding which one to buy was more difficult. After ordering, I received an order acknowledgment. On my chosen day of pickup, I received an email saying my cake is ready at the time frame I requested. Per instructions, upon arrival, I called the number provided. She came out with my cake. She shares the kitchen space with Twelve Baskets Catering. The hours are stated on her website. I ultimately decided on a standard cake - strawberry shortcake. The 8" is $51. She uses freshly whipped cream for the frosting instead of heavy buttercream. She told me she made the cake that morning. Super fresh! The cake has two layers of vanilla cake. Strawberries in whipped cream line the mid-layer. The cake part is spongier than many other Chinese cakes, which I now understand is the source for some of the negative comments about the cake being ugly (smashed, destroyed) when cut. Using a serrated knife with a saw motion will help minimize that. Taste wise, all nine of us thought the mild sweet taste, fresh fruits, freshly whipped cream, with a sponge cake that has more "body" was a winning combination. It has a slightly drier texture. We like the bite and slight chew of the spongier cake. I don't think everyone will like this texture. Surprisingly, all nine of us liked it. Two people (both non-Asian) got seconds. It looked good and had chocolate and hazelnuts (as an addition) which I love and it wasn't too sweet - I'd preferred it a bit sweeter. The owner was nice and communicated well. Some of the shortcomings; when we were cutting the cake, the slices were breaking in crumbs and it did not look good. The layers of cake were dry, maybe more cream could have helped. I had really high hopes for this place but it kinda fell short. We ordered a cake here for my dad's birthday and the ordering process was pretty easy. Pick up was also pretty easy, and price was pretty reasonably too. We ordered the tiramisu matcha cake. The cake looks good, but it was not good. The matcha on top was so thick and bitter that it overpowered everything. And not sure what else they put on top the it makes it stick to the roof of the mouth. The rest of the cake was ok and wasn't too sweet and a little dry. Lastly, they wrote the happy birthday sign for us on this little plaque. A small coffee and cake spot right across from the downtown Bellevue park! I was taking my dog on a walk at the park and walked passed Fumie's Gold. Not sure what it was, I decided to check it out and saw there was a collection of small dessert items in the case, as well as a coffee and tea menu. I'm happy to have found a great bakery that caters towards lighter, less sweet Asian style cakes. For so long, my go to has been Regent bakery for cakes but Fumie's offers more unique flavors (black sesame, matcha, ube) at a similar price point (~$40 for 8 inch cake). We tried the ube cake which was delicious! Pieces of ube, fresh whipped cream, and a delicious custard between two layers of vanilla sponge with more ube on top. In regards to ordering the cake - the store was not able to give me a quote on the cake when i was in the store which was weird but I got a call back that same day. I'm very disappointed in the service here. I ordered two cakes here for my husbands birthday, and when I got home I realized they made the incorrect cake. They gave me an eggless cake which was extremely dry compared to the other cake I had. By the time I realized it, we were already home and too far to drive all the way back.
