Brains require a lot of energy to function, so it's no surprise that the main Caltech dining hall…read morehas a vibrant array of delicious items to please the palate. Food: You can get pretty much anything you'd want here ranging from pizza to Mongolian BBQ. Each station has some sort of ridiculously nerdy name that adds to the dining experience. I'm going to go through all the options one by one, so bear with me: Bunsen Burner (Grill): This place serves piping hot breakfast in the morning and transitions to choice cuts of meats in the afternoon. They seriously have a butcher's delicase in the dining hall. How sweet is that? Deli Epicenter: The Epicenter is the to go place for some sandwiches. Never tried it, but the line is always ridiculous, so it must be at least decent. Salad-Fusion: The salad bar is priced at $0.39/oz. Not super impressive as the selection is fairly small, but it holds its own. Each plate comes with a baked roll. Wok Zone: This is the Mongolian BBQ station. The product that comes out of here is entirely dependent on your ability to mix the sauces correctly. Sometimes they'll randomly throw weird items into your food that you didn't want like corn. I don't know why. Maybe there are some passive aggressive employees who hate their job behind the counter. The amount of food you get is astronomical. Pizza-Byte: Super good pizza at a reasonable price with loads of crazy options to choose from like Ranch Bacon Chicken. Comfort Equation/Latin Bar: These are the two stations in the middle of the dining hall that serve the absolute best things on campus. The Latin bar frequently has tostadas with really great meat offerings. They like to serve seafood paella loaded with mussels and calimari (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/fp2H4dCbkZO52RrmFqzSVQ?select=S8Xc9TtSZsLoU5taZzN5Wg). Comfort Equation frequently has dishes like spice-crusted grilled chicken, Asian dishes, salmon, etc. You can load up on these items (some are priced by weight, some with a flat amount) and then get healthy sides like rice and steamed veggies. Bandwidth Bakery: Has baked goods... most aren't super awesome. TechTonics: This is a glorified soda fountain with coffee. The name is much more awesome than the actual station. Soup Station: It's soup. Sushi: Also self-explanatory. Cooking 101: Ok, this one is pretty special. They serve absolutely delicious pasta here, cooked to order. Some of the meats include chicken, sausage, and meatballs. You can get red, cream, or a combo of sauces. They'll often experiment with different dishes like pho on occasion. I would stay away from the pho, though. It was watery and tasted nothing like the real thing! Service: It's a dining hall so you grab what you want and pay at the front in cash, credit, or Caltech card. There's an area in the back to return your plate etc. that a lot of people forget about. Atmosphere: It's a typical dining hall experience, but at least they have pomegranates, artichokes, a large array of citrus fruits, and strawberries growing outside. I think they sometimes use those in the food. Synopsis: Pretty cool, although with the swipe card option you can easily spend over 10 bucks for lunch and not even know it.

There is plenty of parking and it is easy to find. It is seat yourself once you arrive. We were greeted immediately and offered drinks. We got Dr. Peppers and ordered the BLT and beef melt sandwiches with French fries. When things are done in a simple manner, there leaves room for critique, but it was so well done. My beef melt was simple and tasty, and the bread was perfectly crispy on the edges. It was the right amount of texture and meat without leaving you overstuffed. My mom enjoyed her BLT and mentioned that the bacon was cooked perfectly. We definitely want to come back for the simple comfort food that is here. Our waitress was super friendly and let us know what the specials were for the day as well as gave us time and checked in on us. I definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the mood for a no fuss, simplistic dining experience.

It was easy to order online and food was ready for pick up when we arrived. Luckily we remembered to ask for utensils and napkins before we left the restaurant. Pot pies were individual sized portions. They were warm with a hot filling. Hubby got the beef and I got the dark meat chicken. I think I would get white meat next time. There were good amounts of meat and veggies in each of our pies but we both agreed the filling could use more seasoning. The huge side of mashed potatoes and gravy were my favorite - warm, creamy, and yummy!

Indoor and outdoor seating available. What they do make is delicious. Pasta, burgers, Mexican, chicken, salads, a salad bar. All affordable. But you may want to plan your lunch hour earlier rather than later (like 11:30). If you have your heart set for a specific menu item, you may be disappointed if you don't get there early. Some stuff runs out. If it's gone, they're not making any more. I've been disappointed to have to make a second choice in a moment's notice on two different occasions in four visits. I only have a 30-minute lunch and have little time for a cook to make something. I'm usually ordering something packed up and ready to go. This would otherwise be 4 stars, but it's 3 because they don't always have what I want.

Sometimes along the way, I find a home, like Public Works. First I had to observe and report, then I had to observe and report, now I have to observe and report. All that observing and reporting makes me hungry and this cafeteria does not disappoint. I've installed custom stainless steel stuff in this kitchen that I cut out and shaped myself! I've checked behind the fridges and coolers, this place is clean. Cafeterias, Cantinas, Chow Halls, all hold a special place in my heart (they feed me). My bosses are hiring again, why they don't promote first? I'll never entirely understand (I work so hard). I hear these candidates asserting themselves, freezing up, oscillating and bending at the waist. I want to tell them there's an obstacle course for laborer applicants, but they aren't laborer applicants because no one starts from the bottom anymore - it's romantic and old fashioned, it's quaint and rustic, it's over. For me it's the classic novel found on a shelf in the middle of the night, devoured like a piece of meat. Ground chuck, ground floor, it's the parking lot below the ground floor actually, it's the shovel and the gravel, the shot put and the post hole digger, anyways I could go on forever about what it is and what it isn't, but this cafeteria though, what they've got is a griddle where the eggs spread thin before hardening, and then the other ingredients can be wrapped inside a cozy egg blanket, and then it all gets rolled up into a tasty tortilla. There's salsa and a salad bar, there are sandwiches and snacks, coffee and juice, don't be afraid, it's only lunch.
