Fujinoya is a rather small Japanese restaurant in Hartsdale. They have sushi bar which is small but their sushi was great in quality. Dining room has about 10 small tables so packed on Saturday night with waiting line to outside. We had Izakaya kind of menu choice this time and they were true Japanese taste and I can easily feel this place own by true Japanese owners. They had good deal drink special and a jockey of draft with an appetizer $8, we took that of course. Great fish and meat appetizers menus here. Ramens at the end of dinner we call "Shime", were ramen and they have a few different kind and our two kinds were good. It's important for us that ramen noodle not over cooked and hot soup, they didn't fail on that point as well. They had a few other good Shime foods on the menu, too. Two of us ate and drunk pretty much and the bill came $140, that is reasonable for the amount and quality of food and great services. Sorry to downgrade my review but after last night's dinner I feel the need do. The miso Ramen broth was not great, egg was overcooked and the pork was tough. Noodles were good. The sushi/sashimi quality was just ok, not top tier. In the past the sushi texture was very good. Bento box was a big disappointment. A 4 piece sushi roll and 3 pieces of sashimi were the "meal" portion my husband selected for his box. In the box was a small amount of seaweed salad, tossed Japanese salad, a piece of rolled cabbage that wasn't edible, and potato salad. Cup of miso was served separately. I have never seen potato salad served in a bento box and I've eaten a lot of bento boxes. No spring rolls or shumai or gyoza which is usually included in a bento box. (see photo) read more

Not sure how I've lived in the area for so long and never tried this place out! A friend recommended to come for dinner so we came on a Friday night. Lucky for us a table opened up just as we arrived. It's a very small with limited seating but they do have a bar area as well. Decided to try their ramen and it didn't disappoint! The broth was definitely interesting in flavor, since it was a combination of meat and fish blend. Endless noodles and soup, delicious! My friends ordered noodle dishes as well. This local eatery is quite impressive and is one of the most direct, spot on Japanese places in the area. The spicy miso Ramen was flavored excellently. While the ramen itself was probably too soft as a noodle, the rest of the ingredients were really nice, especially the egg. The meat might have been a tad too tough, but the plentiful bamboo shoot and it's crunchiness made up for it. The cooked seaweed salad was a revelation. I never had anything like it, and it's not the usual seaweed salad. The agedashi tofu was really hot in the middle; it could have been a bit more crunchy but otherwise it was excellent. This place is so quaint and home'y where it would an awesome spot to take on a date or take someone you ready want to get to know. There is limited seating, but it adds to the cozy vibe. I've been here mor times than I can count and though I want to give it 5 stars, some dishes I feel miss the mark. My go-to things here are tempura anything: They batter their food to perfection...super light and airy..you couldn't ask for more. The sushi: very well made fresh sushi. Then the Sukiyaki pot which is the star of the show. It comes with rice, miso soup (even though the main is a soup...so soup with a soup hah) and is a bowl of just warmth and goodness. There is no description on the menu, but this is theee thing to get more me here. It has tofu, loads of meat, bit of noodles, mushrooms and veges. All that combined with the most delicious broth...I'm already salivating typing this review. What misses the mark is the udon noodles dishes that are just ok, but to their credit it's a small pet of the menu. This is the spot! When the Japanese go to eat you know it's among the top of all tried and tested places. I drove by it so many times but never thought to stop in until I got cravings and read so much about it. Oh and they have parking! We had a really good lunch at Fujinoya the other day. We got there a little after 12 (when they open) and were quickly seated. It's a fairly small restaurant with fairly plain decor and low lighting. We ordered the gyoza, shrimp tempura rolls, and the sushi regular lunch special. The sushi came with 7 pieces of regular sushi (which are the same ones listed in the sushi lunch description), california rolls, and miso soup. Honestly this was my first time trying real sushi and it was all really good! I think some of the sushi didn't have a ton of flavor, but not sure if that's typical. I'm also not sure what the difference is between the sushi regular and sushi lunch special is because they seem the same with a $10 difference. I guess it could be a portion thing, but honestly the portion of this was already really small and kind of expensive. Another quick note would be that they close at 2 and reopen again at 5-9 so keep that in mind! I'd definitely come back because I'd like to give the rolls and noodle dish a try! read more

I stumbled upon Fujinoya after the restaurant I originally wanted to dine in was too crowded. After I quickly whipped out the Yelp app I saw this place was close by so my party and I decided to try it out. Located in Hartsdale right on Central Park Ave, Fujinoya sits among a ton of other restaurants along this strip. The structure of the restaurant from the outside alone makes it stand out - it almost looks like it was a converted garage or something. The restaurant isn't big inside, it's more wide than deep, with tables scattered throughout and a small sushi bar against the back wall. Before I even tried any of the food, I had a feeling I was going to get the real deal here - the place was hopping, and I noticed many of the diners were speaking Japanese - they even had Japanese newspapers and periodicals outside the restaurant to read. We decided to start off with the shumai and the squid balls; both were served piping hot and had loads of flavor - very tasty. A lot of times I'm unimpressed when I order shumai, but these were some of the best Ive had. For my main I had a shrimp tempura roll and a spider roll - both had a good ratio of rice to other ingredients and tasted very fresh. The bill wasn't the cheapest but the quality of the food was superior so I don't mind. Service was pretty good, and overall I had a great meal here - I would definitely return! read more

This place is a rip-off! Went here for lunch with a friend and we had to order THREE lunch specials and one appetizer before we felt sufficiently full. I ordered the sashimi and sushi bento box. When it arrived, I had to pinch myself, as I wondered if I was in a bad dream. The sashimi was three paper-thin slices of salmon, tuna and yellowtail (one slice of each) and there were six meager pieces of tuna roll. The largest compartment of the bento box contained smashed down white rice as if they were trying spread it out and hide the fact that there is very little food in this bento box. My companion ordered stir-fried udon which had about five pieces of beef in it and no vegetables, but lots of sauce and noodles. So, we ordered the tempura appetizer to supplement the meal and it was literally 4-5 pieces of tempura for $12!! We only got one shrimp. We should have left to grab Shake Shack at that point, but didn't feel like having a disruption to our meal, so we ordered a THIRD lunch special which was the nigiri sushi lunch special. Finally, we felt satisfied! The check for this disastrous lunch was $60. We will never come here again. read more

I was dying to have a fresh hand pulled noodle for my bday so we found this place. It us a stand alone restaurant, decorated in typical Japanese restaurant style. It is a casual place with a small sushi bar and lots of tables. So like I said, I really wanted some fresh pulled noodles, however, they don't do the whole noodle prep thing out front for the guests. I asked if their noodles were fresh, the server advised that only the ramen noodles were made in-house and the soba were bought. I ordered some Toro sashimi and Shoyu Ramen with Ramen Noodles with Pork, Egg, and Vegetables in Soy Sauce-flavored Soup. The Toro was ok.. didn't taste super fresh. My ramen soup however was delicious. The pork had sooo much flavor, they noodles were nice and chewy. I really enjoyed my meal. I come to NY often to stay with my sister and this was our first time to eat here. There were 3 of us. We arrived around 6 and the place was only half full. It is a small place. The menu is a notebook with slide in sheet protectors and the menu has pictures of each item as if were printed on regular paper. The Sashimi and Nigiri part of the menu is small (the whole menu is actually pretty small), and it does not tell you how many pieces are in an order. We started with the edamame. It was good but the bowl definitely was not filled up. The miso soup was a good size. We also got two of the Chirashi Deluxe to split between the three of us, They were $35 each so a total of $70 for the two bowls which I thought was a tad pricey. It was just enough food. We got the green tea and we had to ask to get a refill but it was as if there were one waiter for the whole place. The waiter, btw, had a shirt on that said Balducci's on it, which I thougtht was a bit odd since you would expect a shirt with the name of the establishment. Decided to eat in. I have had take out before. It's a small restaurant, we were lucky to get in with out a wait. There were only 2 tables left, it's a tiny spot. Fujinoya and Azuma are the only two authentic Japanese restaurants in the county. While Azuma (also in Hartsdale) focuses on sushi, Fujinoya is more of an all round japanese fare place. While parts of the menu seem like they have been modified for the american palate, the place still does a good job of sticking to its traditional Japanese roots. Basically, it's as close as you'll get to Japanese fare in Westchester. 5 starts for the food and location. If this were in NYC, I'd give it 4. Weeeeee ratings. read more

Glad I did, they have a menu selections that are not similar to other Japanese places. The 4 star is for good food and nice service. Not a place for a date but decent and clean to bring over friends and family. I had the tako yaki for appetizer and chicken ramen . I enjoyed the tako yaki a lot. Ramen is ramen. It didn't taste anything special but I like it. Then I tried the jelly and fruit appetizer with vanilla ice cream. You can pass on that one, it is a meh for me. I will come back for their omakase. The japanese pickles and other menu items were a sign that this place is mostly authentic. The interior felt a bit dated, cramped, strange; I remarked to my girlfriend that I felt like we were on a movie set. We mostly ordered sushi, and sashimi bowls. The rolls were good and the bowls had fresh salmon. The miso soup was run-of-the-mill. I was relieved to see many Japanese customers enjoying their meals in this quaint authentic Japanese restaurant owned by a Japanese. We went to Fujinoya for a Sunday lunch and since we never order sushi on weekends, we had Shoyu Ramen, Donkatsu Ramen and Nabeyaki Udon. Both Ramen broths were rich in flavor and noodles were cooked to perfection. The portion was just enough and very hot. Nabeyaki Udon was served in a clay pot that kept the dish piping hot until I was finished. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the broth was just right. Not too salty and not too bland. Very flavorful. Abundance of napa cabbage was great and there were many pieces of flavorful chicken with a large tasty shrimp tempura on top. We finally found a Ramen and Udon restaurant in Westchester we can reply on!
