***2 1/2 stars*** This was one of the oddest sushi restaurant experiences I've ever had. I came here for lunch on Saturday with the Millennial Chum, who may have gotten into a mild rumble with a member of the staff a decade ago when she was a much younger Millennial Chum, but was still willing to return and give this a shot. No rumbles this time, but the service and atmosphere left a very strange impression. We stopped by at the height of lunch hour around 1PM - part of my thought process was that sushi tends to be pretty quick for sit-down service, so we weren't likely to have an issue seeing the 2PM Nicole Kidman porn nearby (I was correct on that front at least). The minute we walked in, we both looked at each other in confusion - it was SO quiet and empty, I actually felt self-conscious walking through the restaurant to our designated booth. I think there was one other party in there, but even with that it was honestly like being in a mausoleum. Strange. I decided to get three rolls - two normal, one edgy. This is now the second time in a few months that I've encountered a sushi menu that doesn't have salmon/avocado on it, which I consider one of the most common hand rolls, but it wasn't an issue to order it off menu. I also got a sweet potato roll and a Winter Roll. The Winter Roll was the star here - loved the flavors and it sort of tasted like a Dorito in a good way (which I assume is a hat tip to the crab meat on top). Definitely something I'd get again. The salmon/avocado was fine; a little light on the ingredients but tasted fresh. I just did not like the Sweet Potato roll, and I can't quite put my finger on it. This is one I get a lot, and taste-wise just wasn't up to par. Maybe the potato wasn't as ripe as I'm used to? The Millennial Chum is not a sushi person but given the lack of fish this was a pretty safe test roll for her, and she DID like it for what it's worth. Another weird touch? In my experience, sushi places tend to have very friendly staff, which I always assumed was cultural and/or a way of overcompensating for language barriers, etc. The waitstaff we encountered were the sushi restaurant equivalent of Daria - everyone was unsmiling and very monotone. Overall, the turnaround time wasn't bad (we got to the Nicole Kidman porn with time to spare), but the food didn't come out at the same time, which was a little annoying. The Millennial Chum's Shrimp Teriyaki came out first, then a few moments later two out of my three rolls came, but it took another five minutes at least for the final roll to show up. Not the biggest deal in the world (I certainly had something to munch on while I waited) but I like to eat my rolls simultaneously so I'm not just eating one flavor to end the meal. That was unusual, and also strange (theme of the meal) since there was no one else really in the restaurant. This was a tough one to gauge. The sushi overall was decent but it just wasn't a comfortable experience. Unless the food is absolutely mindblowing, the vibe really matters and can make the difference. Daria was a cutting edge comedy that deserved a better platform than MTV - it doesn't make for a great sushi lunch. read more

Food was great! I got sushi and others had hibachi. I liked that we could choose to sit in a more quiet booth, instead of at the hibachi.

The food is great and staff as well. But in winter time they do not put heat on and the girl server walks around with her coat on. Summer time hot in there do not put air on. Many customers all feel the same I talked to to cold to hot. Sad because I bro g a lot of friends in there and they say the same thing to cold or to hot. I took my son here for his 10th birthday because he wanted the hibachi experience and it is close to our house .. our whole family really enjoyed this place. The service was fast and efficient .. everything was seasoned perfectly and fresh . I got the scallops and filet mignon and was very impressed with the quality for the price : Also the chef was super friendly and did all of the cool tricks that all of us loved! We were there on a Friday night but it was early so maybe that's why it was still pretty quiet. They have separate sections for the sushi seating area and hibachi. I've already left a review for this restaurant but have been back recently and just HAD to update my review because of the phenomenal time I had!! Since the first time we went we had been back multiple times but haven't been back for about 3-4 months. Even though we hadn't been for a while, the staff remembered us and even remembered that my 10 year old only liked broccoli for veggies I was so pleased with the staff and especially the hibachi chef! Fuji is definitely the best hibachi in the area in my opinion. They offer lunch specials during the week that can feed two people for at least one meal. Came for lunch yesterday. We almost went back out the moment we walked in. The place appeared dark, small, and ad-hoc looking. However, we had already ditched a restaurant just down the road a few minutes ago, so we thought we'd just bite the bullet and get the lunch over with. We were a bit relieved once we got seated in the back because the decor was much more on par with expectation. There's just one waitress, so we had to flag her down to have her take our orders. The food took a long time to come, must have been upwards of 20 minutes even though there weren't many patrons at the time. However, the food was surprisingly good. The service was OK once asked but inattentive otherwise -- but the attitude was not of friendly kind. The waitress was busy when we needed the a box for the leftover, so the manager/owner came to the table. Surprisingly she put the leftover in the box for us; however, she did so grudgingly. Very strange experience. We can see the staff was not happy, but that's not going to help with the business. Sort of downward spiral. The entrance area must be improved and made more inviting. Fuji is one of those hidden gems that mostly the locals know about. Their takeout business, especially around lunch time, may even be greater then their sit down patronage. I've been coming here for a little over 2 years with both groups and solo. Nice Japanese entrees, and standard hibatchi if raw fish isn't your thing. Where Fuji really shines though are the speciality rolls. The sushi is consistently very fresh fish, if a little pricey compared to other nearby resturants. Worth it in my opinion, I can't help myself from ordering the holmdel roll everytime I go. If you're looking for a quiet, clean and excellent sushi destination, give it a try. Continuing our quest to try all sushi restaurants in Monmouth County, we decided to try Fuji Sushi Bar & Hibachi on Route 35 in Hazlet. It is located in the Chelsea Place shopping plaza behind the Dunkin Donuts. We were greeted and seated almost immediately as there was not much business at all. We ordered hot green tea and the server was off to get it right away. When she came back with the tea, we ordered a Sashimi deluxe which we noted was to be our appetizer. Within a few minutes another server returned to take the rest of our order and another server came out with miso soup and green salad, which we split. He had the soup, I had the salad. It was your standard soup and salad. We didn't wait long and our 18 piece sashimi was delivered courteously. Presentation wise it was nothing fancy, taste wise it was satisfactory. I know we have had better (Ichiban really knows how to do sashimi right), but it certainly wasn't the worse we have tried. It included the standard thinly sliced tuna, mackerel, yellowtail, salmon, and whitefish. One thing I now realize as I write this review, a bowl of rice was not provided with the sashimi platter as the menu indicates is to be included. Usually when we order special rolls (which is almost always) the bowl of rice is not necessary. Regardless, we didn't request no rice, so it should have been brought to our table. In any case, our special rolls were good. I had the Tri-Color and Red Dragon rolls. He simply had Rainbow and Philly rolls. Out of all the rolls, my favorite was the Tri-Color roll, which consisted of tuna, cucumber, avocado inside with tobiko and sesame seeds on the outside. Quite tasty indeed. He had no complaints about his rolls. One thing I am finding is that a good majority of the sushi restaurants around here are pretty much the same: average. There seems to be only a few that really go above and beyond and offer unique items. I think out of all of the restaurants we've tried, Kanji in Tinton Falls is doing everything right and stands out as different. Unique menu, fancy presentation, generous portions, and extraordinary quality. With that said, if you're looking for a satisfactory, garden-variety sushi experience, Fuji in Hazlet is an adequate choice. Nothing grand, but certainly not below par. Charming suburban Japanese restaurant. Nice decor/sushi bar. Several 6 seat hibachi tables to cater to the fishphobes. We went here for our annual Christmas Asian dinner. I tried a piece of hamachi (yellowtail) and unagi (eel) sashimi - both were fresh and nicely sized. The hibachi meal and routine was reliable/predictable. Spinning the spatula - check. Onion volcano - check. Spinning the egg and breaking it on the spatula - check. The steak and chicken habachi combo - which came with salad, soup, fried rice, and noodles - provided healthy value at $18 and an unhealthy amount of sodium (par for the hibachi course). Food is okay, not that authentic. Meat covering sushi rice is too long. There is no WiFi where, and the owner/waitress rarely checked on us. They use traditional Japanese music to cover a constant ring sound, which is just extra annoying. For this level of food and service, it is slightly overpriced. read more

I returned here recently to notice that Fuji has dropped a bit in quality. I am torn...i want to give it a 2.5 but alas cannot due to Yelps rating scheme. Coworker and i got here around 11:45 to notice no1 was around...we waited for a few while in the hibachi area most of the staff were eating. That in itself is not that big of a deal to me as the service for the rest of the meal was decent. I had the nabeyaki udon which was good but coworkers rice never came with her sukiyaki. I also recently ordered the 3 roll lunch special from them including an eel cucumber roll which had the saddest amount of eel ive ever seen. For the price, it was upsetting. The prices are expenisive for what you are getting. I've gotten the sushi, sukiyaki and nabi yaki udon here. I like their nabi yaki udon, especially in the winter when I've got a cold. Their sushi isn't terrible, but it's the same price for the lunch as kanji which has way better food. The sukiyaki was ok as well...not terrible...not great either. Overall if the prices were a bit cheaper I might be inclined to give them a 3 star rating, but since it's not I will just give 2 stars. I recently went to Fuji for the first time and was impressed by the great service. The hostess seated us and brought our drinks out promptly. (Green tea is not listed on the menu, but they do serve it.) Our server was knowledgeable about the way items are prepared. I confirmed with her that the sweet potato roll is typically made with sweet potato tempura. Without me even having to ask, the server explained how the chef could prepare the roll by either frying or steaming the sweet potato without the tempura batter. She also explained that I could get the accompanying eel sauce on the side. I ordered the roll with steamed potato and without eel sauce; the texture was a bit strange, but I really appreciated how the server and chef accommodated my preferences. read more

We ordered takeout from here twice in the last few months. It's gone downhill fast. First, their website isn't updated to reflect their new menu, so when you order takeout, it's sort of a crapshoot. Originally we enjoyed the sushi somewhat. It wasn't stellar, but it didn't suck like supermarket sushi either. Well my husband had a long day at work and he decided we should have sushi, and ordered a smattering of rolls. First off, he said no cucumber, because I abhor it. Guess what happened? Yep, cucumber. Still, I pressed on. The fish was bland. And just not tasty. The rolls fell apart as you picked them up with your chopsticks, which resulted in them drowning in the soy sauce that spilled all over our bag. For a Saturday night, I would've expected fresher fish. We didn't eat very late, so the fish could not have been out that long. I'll stick to nakayama and nemo, much better prices and fish. read more

Fuji is the best sushi / hibachi place in Monmouth county hands down. I've been frequenting this restaurant for probably ten years and the quality is still always top notch. The staff is always friendly and respectful and the owner often knows what I want to order before I do. So far I have gone here twice in the last 10 days the first time a Saturday night the fish(I only eat sashimi)was fabulous and they had Uni, not the best Uni but very good. The second time was a Sunday night the fish was ok and no Uni. What I don't understand is the sashimi not fabulous all the time. The cuts were not consistent and for the price they should have been thicker. It seemed like the chef cut it for sushi and then realized I ordered sashimi. For that reason I give them 4 stars. I've been going here for years, and used to love going there. The last few years, the wait for takeout has become awful. I mean 30 minutes for two rolls with soup/salad. It would be understandable if there were a ton of people inside, but I've had a minimum of 30 minutes for this sized order and walked in with two tables sat and they're making my order when I get there. I'd say Fuji has the best Japanese food in its area, though the newly-opened Wasabi could give it a run for its money. I used to eat here all the time when I went to Monmouth University (about 10 minutes away). Their sushi in particular is excellent. It always seems very fresh and has a "crisp" sort of taste. Their cooked entrees are also very good, but seemed to have declined a bit in quality over the past few years. Their teriyaki and shumai in particular are very good. They're also one of the few Japanese restaurants that offers a shumai lunch special, which is appreciated. The hibachi is pretty standard, and the food is roughly comparable with that of the Arirang about 45 min. to the north. The salad has a bit of a tart, acidic taste to it that the other restaurants lack. It's not bad - just different. Costwise, it's moderately expensive. Lunch specials will run you about $10, dinners around $20. Slightly more than a typical meal at Mahzu, slightly less than a typical meal at Arirang. read more

We had hibachi and we had to wait for the other table to serviced one waiter one hibachi cook on a Saturday night! The cook was confused with such a large party. The portions we small for others and larger for others. and the overall food was not great . We never saw a waiter if you want anything to drink bring your own water , soda and booze .
