"Cincinnati needs a grocery store downtown."…read more I've stated or thought the above phrase multiple times during the last [gulp] 26 years that I've worked in downtown Cincinnati. I did not lie; aside from the 2020 COVID-lockdown months, I've shopped at the mini-Kroger on Court Street weekly since its grand opening. Can I find the perfect leg of lamb there? No. It's not Findlay Market nor Is it THE BIG SHOP store. However, it is perfect for picking up coffee, milk, seltzer, and salad supplies for the office, and filling in the gaps in the home cubbard. Impressive produce department, cheese selection , and baked goods. Solid selection of dry goods. Limited meat department, whose pre-portioned and seasoned offerings may appeal to millennials. (Got lamb? See above.) Convenient grab-n-go lunch assortment of deli meat and cheese, pre-made meals in the form of salads, sandwiches, and sushi.

Visiting the store always brings back memories of going with my grandma to pick up our weekly meat order. The ambiance is still the same. They always had fresh fruit and vegetables. I've participated in the Goetta Fest put on by another producer. I love this stuff. Is it super healthy?? No. Is it delicious gift from heaven? Why, YES. So any time I come up to the area I try somewhere that makes goetta. This was a nice neighborhood meat market that makes their own so i had to try it. It was pretty good. They do make it WITHOUT MSG, so if that stuff gives you a headache or if you have to watch your salt intake, they have an option for you! I bought a goetta, egg, and cheese sandwich and it was tasty. If I was nearby, I'd try it again. I also took a few pounds home and cooked it over the next week. Now, back to my search for goetta and on to the next butcher shop! ;)

Remember, that's how generic use to be packaged!? Anyway.. my husband has always been receptive to generic and over the years I've come to appreciate some Kroger brand items as well. But I never considered shopping at Aldi. I incorrectly perceived them to be one big generic store. My husband began working for a company with an Aldi close by. He'd stop in and grab little things at first... right around the time we really began reading labels on our food. He mentioned to me that many of their items contain minimal ingredients and often times the high fructose corn syrup that is in national brands isn't present in items at Aldi's. He got my attention with those revelations. I began visiting my local Aldi and there are several items I LOVE!! I won't list them, but I encourage you to find your own. I will admit that it's sometimes a nuisance to bring your own bags but we have to start being kinder to the earth anyway so it's a welcomed inconvenience... and you save a ton of money. Give it a try, you'll be glad you did.
