This is my standard late-night meal spot after performing in The Plains. I like to come here with my colleagues for good conversation and comfort food. They have plenty of breakfast food as well as burgers and cheesesteaks. The 24-hour open status is a major perk. I admire the staff for staying friendly even at late hours of the night. For hungry performers who have just finished a show, this is a perfect place. They are cash-only, but there is an ATM on premises. Be advised that the ATM will charge you a fee for withdrawing cash, so if you can, withdraw cash from your bank's ATM before arriving so that you don't have to pay the fee. My go-to meal has been the cheesesteak, which is perfectly portioned in that I don't feel like I'm overeating when I have it. I always leave feeling satisfied. I was also impressed at how addictive their chili cheese fries are, but I would have liked more cheese on them. Having some alcoholic beverage options would be nice, but I can also understand why that's not the case. This is a family-friendly diner. That said, the hot cocoa I had was too watery. I prefer it made with milk. I was just grateful to have a reliable place to eat late at night so far out in the country. read more

Delicious breakfast in a vintage diner - how could you go wrong? The coffee was tasty and the blueberry pancakes were the best I've had in quite a while. The breakfast for dinner that we grabbed here was a perfect end to a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park. I hoped to find some more southern cookin' while we were out in Virginia and Frost Diner came through for me LIKE A BOSS. And all three of us ate here for just under 30 bucks after tax and tip! Crispy country fried steak with classic milk gravy, home fries and eggs over-easy. It was good to be back in the south! Everything about this place was perfectly diner-tastic, from the long narrow dining room, to the old jukebox consoles at each table, to the cash-only checkout counter with york peppermint patties for sale. This place is the real deal! Another plus, Frost Diner it seems is now smoke free, so, in an attempt to give it back the extra star it deserves that all the other reviewers docked for the smokiness, I'm giving it a qualified 5-star rating. A wrinkle-in-time diner. Low prices; pretty good food. The Southern fried chicken--satisfying; fried shrimp--crispy; and crinkle fries--beautiful. They can deep fry food here and, frankly, that's what I'm looking for from this kind of establishment. Also, the cole slaw and shakes were decent. When hub and I walked in, conversation stopped. The atmosphere returned to normal in a couple of minutes, but I was wonderin'. It was probably helpful that the Nats were playing on the TV, and Scherzer threw his shut-out (Father's Day). Now this is what a city girl needs once in a while: a small, classic diner with a staff who knows you since you were "this tall" and plenty of food at a great price. Deeeeeeelish. A group of friends wanted to come here after hiking Old Rag. It's a typical diner. Nothing special. Quick, greasy food at a low cost. I ordered the 4oz steak tip with scrambled eggs and hash brown, and asked for it to be medium rare, but got a fully cooked beef brisket instead. I get it, I came on a busy day during a busy brunch time but what wasn't called for was being ignored while trying to get the waiters attention on how long the food is going to take while I'm watching people that sat ten minutes after me getting their food. But what's really uncalled for was for the cook and waiter to be talking in spanish saying I'm being a bitch and should had came earlier for faster service, I may not look spanish but I can understand EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID!! My bro had an omelette which looked "A" okay. This is a family owned diner with another restaurant in Culpeper. Been to both and the diner is the "thrifty man's choice" in my opinion. We went here for Sunday breakfast. We aren't from around here and didn't know the area but across this little gem. It's an older diner reminding me of when I was a kid. We sat at the bar and a gent eating breakfast next to me struck up a conversation ( how often does that happen nowadays? Most time people could care less and just sit and stare into nothingness). I found this refreshing. It was crowded but I was informed it is always crowded for breakfast. When I see an old time diner shut down, it hurts my heart a little bit. But then you go into one, eat the okay food, and receive the marginal service, and you see that nostalgia can't keep a place open forever. We were greeted first by the numerous "CASH ONLY" signs and then by our double-duty hostess/server. It was lunch time, but there were plenty of tables and we chose a booth at one end. This is no upgraded, hipster diner with a 1960s look but a farm fresh menu. This is a Sysco foods, questionably sanitary right off the road dive diner. I got the Fried Catfish with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. The potatoes and gravy tasted fine, but the beans were cooked to within an inch of their life and most definitely canned. The catfish was crispy and tasty: the saving grace of the meal. The Sweet Tea was downright off and tasted a bit old. My companions fries tasted frozen. Perhaps I ordered the wrong items. Perhaps there are some hidden gems on the menu. Luckily, the price was right for what we got: cheap. As much as I love to go local when I can, I'll pass this place up for another spot next time. read more

Went there with my parents and two sisters. My family had been there three times before and said it was pretty good each time they went. My mom and I order the country fried chicken, my sisters order burgers, and my dad orders the fried chicken, which he had ordered before. My dad's chicken arrives, and what they tried to pawn off as a half chicken consisted of two tiny thighs, one of which was flat, a tiny wing, and a drumstick which was about 2 1/2 inches long. My dad brought this up to the waitress, and she insisted that that was "how it always comes" even when my dad brought up the fact that he has ordered it before. She just kind of shrugged and walked away with his plate. There was no attempt to fix the situation, and she just kind of avoided us except to give a half hearted check up and to give us our bill. I have been a server coming up on three years and I have had enough experience to know that that was no way to handle that situation. The only redeeming quality was the burgers my sisters got. Now that I live closer to the Culpeper Frost Cafe, I frequent there every weekend vs the Warrenton restaurant, but I'd still stop here any weekend I was in Warrenton. The staff is friendly, the food is delicioussss, and the atmosphere kind of adds to it. It's open 24 hours so you can go any time day or night. It's cash only, but they have an ATM there. The strawberry shakes are great - we sometimes get them with our breakfast. :) I ALWAYS get the Ham & Cheese Omlette. Always. It's the best thing on the menu. My husband always gets corn beef hash - it's his fave. They can cook up almost anything the way you want it and it's all good. I admit I've never been there for breakfast. Mostly because I only make it into Warrenton in the mornings on Saturdays and the place is always jammed with locals. That's a good thing. They've been around since 1955. I'm impressed. The three of us went there for dinner last night (Friday). I had their patty melt and as far as this old classic goes, it was cheap and top notch. The onion rings were great as well. Daughter had their burger and fries and inhaled all of it, declaring the burger wonderful Hubby had the half fried chicken. His mashed potatoes and corn were great, the seasoning on the bird perfect though he thought it a bit overcooked and he said it was a really small bird. It came in its pieces, leg, breast, wing, thigh. Still, for the price - cheap, the food was great. I would definitely go back there again. The three of us got out with dinner for less than $26 and you almost can't do that at one of the umpteen fast food places nearby. read more

During my two week furlough, courtesy of our dysfunctional Congress, I had the opportunity to taste retired life in my thirties.
