Great place for an after-work drink, but there are no happy hour specials. I've gone here twice in the last few weeks for drinks with colleagues after work. The biggest draw for me is that it is quiet enough to have a conversation without yelling. This venue is cute and cozy but the parking is very limited. You have to park on the side street unless your fortunate enough to get one of the 10 spots right next to the building. In my opinion, it's the perfect date night spot! My issue is that they do NOT have any mimosa specials for brunch. I made the mistake of ordering a carafe of mimosas without inquiring about the cost. After the fact, I discovered that when you order a carafe of mimosas they simply charge you for a bottle of the cheapest champagne which is $36 and then they fill the rest of the carafe up with juice. Had I been informed of this in advance, I would have just ordered the bottle of champagne without the juice. When we inquired about the individual glasses of mimosas, the server informed us that they were $10, but when the checks arrived, they were actually $7. A couple pieces of information before visiting Front Room: Don't fall in love with an entrée: I noticed their menu is forever changing--which is refreshing. But try not to catch feelings for that special "something." 9/10 it won't be there the next time you go back. Complimentary Valet: Don't get frazzled on trying to find a parking spot. Trust me, it's impossible. Valet is complimentary for diners. Try not to go in the bathroom: I caught your attention though, right? No, but this is a good thing! The bathroom is effortlessly decorative, and the lighting is flawless. After a few drinks, you'll spend half of your time there attempting to take the perfect selfie for the 'gram. Request JOHN as your Waiter: I swear you won't be sorry. He's precious, prompt, and precise. Top 5 best waiters I've ever had in Dallas. Reservations are unnecessary, but are recommended for table securing. The place is small, so I foresee it filling up fast on the weekends. What a dreadful experience. There was a political meet-and-greet underway outside on the patio while we came for an adult evening out. We knew that the menu was not what it used to be under previous ownership. It was extremely limited, a bar menu really. But, we decided to have dinner anyway. In spite of the fact that the dining room was loaded with very shallow people making racket and NONE wearing a face mask while standing or moving through the restaurant. It was impossible to get the attention of staff. We, literally, had to get up and go into the kitchen to check on our food. Salad dressing on Caesar and BBQ bowl were big disappointment. Waiter did not "hear" our order or did not care. Dinner salad came out long after entrée. Drinks and entrées were misdelivered. One beverage never arrived. The burgers and fries were tasty, the alcoholic beverages were fine, but the rest of the meal was a disappointment. Especially when you consider that, including tip, we spent almost $50 per person. And there was some odd processing issue with the credit card where the server asked for a PIN number on the card. What? The Front Room used to be a lovely dining destination. Now it is a coronavirus superspreader social club for the Dallas County Club set. It suits them. Never mind. read more

While visiting Dallas, I toured around the SMU campus and found myself dehydrated, hot, and desperately craving a refreshing cocktail. The Front Room Tavern was close by and had decent reviews on Yelp so I stopped in for a drink. The place is really cute and quaint with a stocked bar. Unfortunately, it was not stocked with a prime ingredient in their specialty cocktail, Front Room Punch. No pineapple juice ruled out other tropical drinks so I ordered an Amaretto Sour. Marco, the bartender, did not know how to make an Amaretto Sour (it's Amaretto and simple syrup), but said he could look it up. I ordered another specialty cocktail, the Mustang Water, in the hopes of finding it refreshing and fruity. I learned two things: next time just ask for Amaretto over ice with simple syrup and that I do not like strawberry Vodka. I'll give Marco five stars though for a positive attitude, willingness to look up how to make a drink, and his attentiveness. We have come here annually on a Saturday night in June for dinner before a show across the street. The service has never gotten any better over many years. Last night we arrived at 5:45, knowing it would take a long time to get our drinks and food. The restaurant was empty save for two people having a drink at the bar. Nice, inviting ambiance but after the 1st impression it starts to fail. Appetizer was ok but the wine was very good! Chicken entree tasted like it was previously prepared and reheated! Desert was nothing special and tasted as though it was prepared at a cheap bakery. Our waiter was very pleasant but seemed new as he kept running back to kitchen to ask questions about the menu. Came here for drinks at 7pm, relatively early for a Saturday night and to our surprise it was pretty empty. Thinking this was perfect for our party of 9 as we were meeting for a friends Birthday we took a seat at the booth directly in front if the bar. The server was very nice but clearly overwhelmed as her help was lacking urgency or motivation. (1server/1 buss boy) There were three other events being hosted at the hotel that night and it was clear the restaurant was understaffed. We waited over 40 minutes to be acknowledged and another 30 just be served some, not all of our drinks. Unfortunately those drinks were not made correctly. At this point we were over it and our now hour and a half long experience for 4 nasty drinks we couldn't even drink. The manager was understanding and comped our bill. Fries and potatoes were burned, one of our steaks was underdone and another was over, and the food was just overall difficult to eat. Decent food but NOT worth the wait. I visited Front Room Tavern on a Saturday night before seeing a show at the McFarlin Auditorium. There we're maybe 5 tables full. When we arrived, we were told that we could take a seat where ever we wanted (we requested outside) and that the waitress would follow us out... 38 minutes later and we had yet to see our waitress, get waters, or even menus. We ended up moving in to the bar to receive service as the bartender and the bus boy ignored our waves (we made eye contact and yet they never came over). Even with sitting at the bar, each food item we ordered took a minimum of 40 minutes to arrive (and seemed to have been left under a heat lamp) and our drinks took 20+ minutes. At one point, we ended up re-requesting a drink and the bartender did not remember that we had ordered, much less what the drink was. We ordered 3 different food items. Being Christmas Eve and about to step into a church service, I realized we had neglected to make reservations after winding down from a hectic few days. I pulled up my trusty Yelp app and got to searching. Lucky for us Front Room Tavern had seating available 3 hrs later. Located on the ground floor of a hotel, we were pleasantly surprised the location was off the beaten path and not overly crowded. We used the complimentary valet parking and found our way into a cool yet intimate, dimly lit gem. Before being seated we noticed that most the tables sat two across from each other and with the two of us being foodies, we tend to order different items to share and like being able to sit on the same side of the table. We asked if there was room for us to be able to sit together and without hesitation our request was happily accommodated. Yay! To add to the wonderful experience, our waiter, John, was exceptional and provided a first-class evening. You can tell John enjoys what he does (and does it very well) bc he has a genuine smile, much menu knowledge and is just a pleasant person - adding to the evening and making it that much more of a memorable eve. We went with many of John's recommendations and were delighted by every single bite. If I could've licked my plate without being caught or embarrassed, I would have! Seriously wonderful eats and hats off to the chef. Loved the shrimp & grits (best grits ever! a bit of a mellow kick) and the lamb is some of the best I've tried. Great seating inside and especially outside off of Hillcrest Avenue. Service was prompt and attentive and certainly friendly. Thankfully we missed the crowd right before the end of an SMU game, but we noticed it didn't overly crowd after the game either. The Louisiana barbecue shrimp was amazingly good and had a beautifully, breaded crisp on the outside. The grits frim the shrimp and grits plate were buttery and creamy and the shrimp were huge! EXCELLENT Christmas brunch! I might have to make this a tradition with the fam bam every year. The spinach eggs benedict is absolutely on point. They had some pretty killer desserts as well (French macarons in all kinds of flavors, YUM) as well as some tasty adult libations. If you haven't tried the Austin East cider you must get some here! Service wise it was a bit on the hit or miss side but the atmosphere makes up for it. This restaurant is located inside of a boutique hotel in the University Park area. Not sure about their lunch and/or dinner options but I'm definitely coming back for brunch! Make reservations for their holiday brunch next year if you are looking for a place. Looking for someplace new to try the week after Christmas my hubby found Front Room Tavern. We made reservations via Open Table and were set for family date night. Thankfully I'd read the Yelp reviews and tips and learned the hotel connected to the restaurant offers free valet, because there was ZERO parking anywhere near the place. With SMU still on Christmas break, there still wasn't parking to be found. We valet-ed the car and were greeted at the doors of the restaurant by two very friendly, and well dressed men. They quickly found our reservation (which wasn't needed as there were only about six other people inside) and showed us to a table right at the window. The cool thing about this place is all the tables offer a seat near a window and at night, especially during the holidays, of all the beautiful lights decorating the street and SMU campus. We'd already perused the menu online, but were interested to see what new items they had to offer. We did have to ask for the happy hour (daily 3pm-7pm) menu as it wasn't presented to us at first. My hubby started with a beer on tap and I had a decaf latte, while our little man had a mighty cup of milk. My hubby decided he'd order a couple items off the happy hour menu (chicken slider (solo) and beef slider (solo), while I decided I'd try the Ricotta Gnocchi. Our little man was getting the grilled cheese with fries. And we started with an order of fries and dips. Everything, absolutely everything was really tasty. My Gnocchi was plate-licking good! My hubby liked his sliders, but could have used more substance as there was only one mini slider in each order. He ended up helping me finish my Gnocchi. Our little man like his grilled cheese, although the bread was a bit rough, so he mostly ate as much as he could. We were too stuffed for dessert, although we tried to muster up enough room since the dessert menu looked amazing too! We were seated next to a window overlooking the streets so it was very nice, but the whole restaurant was too dark. My friend ordered the Dry Aged Duck Duo and I got the Roasted Chicken. My friend liked her entree and I enjoyed mine as well. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. But my favorite part of the dish was the side of whipped sweet potato! Although we were stuffed, we wanted to try their Chocolate Trifle. It was very good, but a bit heavy due to the rich chocolate cake. We ended up not finishing it. We enjoyed this place a few times during our stay at the Lumen. Early dinner service at the bar was great. Great oysters, cheeses, beef tartar, generous pour of scotch. Room service from their kitchen was also just spot on. Fast, hot, and delicious. We also had brunch here on thanksgiving that can only be described as spectacular. The huge array of different items to choose from was like none I have ever seen before. We dined at The Lumen on Thanksgiving Day, 2016, and had a simply wonderful Thanksgiving buffet dinner. So, when it was time to book our table for Thanksgiving 2017, we phoned The Lumen: I asked if they would be hosting the buffet again this year. "Yes, m'mam!" I was told. We arrived at the appointed time today and walked to the pool area where the dinner had been set up last year, and the space was deserted! When we asked where Thanksgiving Buffet was this year, we were escorted to The Lumen's small coffee shop, The Front Room, seated in a booth, and handed a three course menu, priced at $46 per person...plus gratuity! We saw what was coming out of the kitchen, and it was very small, very unappetizing, unappealing, unfestive plates. We immediately got up and walked out. We were told the hotel's under new management and they didn't want to spend the money this year to do a nice buffet. Note to "new management" of The Lumen: your hotel is in Highland Park, where MUCH MORE is expected for $50 than a blue plate special, especially on Thanksgiving. You lied to us, and you won't get a second chance to earn our business. We're never coming back, and we will tell a number of people about our experience, including those reading this Yelp review. This is a little bit of a mixed review but the bottom line is - excellent food! So keep that in mind. I did not realize this restaurant was connected to the Hotel Lumen (which looks really cool by the way). So that explains some of the detractors. First, I called for reservations (which I thought I needed...I didn't) and the guy on the phone asked if I wanted a table or a booth? I said, "what do you recommend?" He said, "Well, depends on if you want a table or a booth." Ahhh, that helps! I thought maybe he was a dishwasher who walked past the phone when I called. He wasn't. He was one of the hosts. I called back to move my reservation time and the girl who answered sounded like she was on her deathbed. She turned out to be our waitress. She wasn't on her deathbed...but she should have been. She looked like death warmed over... sick as a dog. Sniffling, sneezing, disheveled and just not real confidence inspiring! Another thing that wasn't confidence inspiring was the fact that there were only 3 tables occupied at 12:15 on a Friday afternoon. That's not a good sign. But we soldiered on! So now for the food. It was outstanding! I had deviled eggs as an appetizer and the burger for main course. Great! My daughter had a Caesar salad and it was one of the best I've had in a while. She had avocado toast for entree and it was sublime. Fries were great. So, food was great. Atmosphere was cool as hell. Service and training looked non-existent. I've been meaning to make a follow up review, but the time has just escaped me over the past few months/ nearly year. I returned with my family to the Front Room Tavern last Thanksgiving for their brunch reservation offering, as my husband and daughter both shared my exhaustion at the thought of cooking this Thanksgiving, as we were heading out of town for a two or three hour drive for our entire family get together later that night for dinner (plus we'd made the decision to not make an entire thanksgiving meal and ordeal this year). So we called around early in the morning to find a decent restaurant that was still accepting same day reservations for the holiday, as it was either striking some luck that way or a cheap breakfast diner. As our luck would prove to be alive that morning, they still had openings! We arrived about an hour and a half later, to a polite reception duo and doorman. The wait was a few minutes while they were still getting our table setup, and we were promptly seated. Our waitress was an absolute gem, just amazing and so courteous, sweet and attentive. I truly wish I could remember her name to include her praise is this. The food: Simply fantastic. Husband and I chose the tenderloin with mushrooms, potatoes and followed with an apple tart sort of desert. The cut of meat was superb, and complimented with a perfect seasoning and sear. (A+++) I chose the same course. My daughter went with the traditional Thanksgiving dinner serving, and a pecan tartlet. (A++ from her comments) We all had the chowder to start and it was quite delectable as well. Overall, some of the prices aren't cheap or moderate by most comparisons, however the quality and care taken by the chefs and kitchen staff are just without fault. My experience stopping by here occasionally to have lunch with my daughter every now and then for a meal, I just haven't ever been let down yet. Alright look--this is a cool little "joint" in the ground floor of the Hotel Lumen (hotel on stilts) behind SMU that years ago looked pretty sketchy to me when it was a Holiday Inn or something. Clearly while I've been away from that particular area in recent years, someone has bought and re-done the place because it is now a fancy boutique-looking hotel for richy visiting SMU parents and is super-nice! Neat pool on the rooftop apparently, but I didn't get to see that. What I did see was THE FRONT ROOM! Above I referred to it as a joint in quotes mainly because it is laid out in a long, thin rectangular property with a bar running the length of it that smacks of having previously been a cafe/diner slinging ham & eggs. The finish out transformed it into a hip, loungey kind of vibe and you feel very comfortable in this classy, darkly-lit place, so a joint it is now no more. Why you should be here? Taylor. Taylor is the chef and man, he is a super guy. Came out and visited with us and turns out he's from Caddo Mills just east of Dallas! He has a badass pedigree too that I won't get into (suffice to say, he's inhabited some of Dallas' super high-end other "joints"), but trust me they nabbed a good one to man the kitchen here. We'd already eaten earlier and came here for drinks. My friend, who frequents the place, decided to order his favorite dessert, some kind of chocolate thing that turned out to be PHENOMENAL. When Taylor appeared again, I asked what dessert he particularly liked and he ended up sending out all 4 of their offerings for us to sample! A. Super cool. B. the answer is: coconut creme pie. Trust me on this. Jackie was behind the bar and was super! Although their menu features scads of craft / prohibition-style cocktails, I pulled my usual bit of asking Jackie to just make me something awesome, and that I liked gin. Sometimes a bartender takes this and runs with it, and sometimes they are beaten by the request. At first it seemed like Jackie was kind of "oh great. can't you just order something?", but then she produced this absolute magic that she concocted herself, complete with gin, egg white, who-knows-what-else, and maybe a basil leaf garnish. She really came through and turned out to be very cool. By the way, my friend said he would've gotten the filet had we eaten dinner here. I asked Taylor what was good on the menu and he immediately said to get the duck. I LOVE DUCK. Can't wait to come back here and have that! Will update this review once I do. The Front Room is located within the boutique style Lumen Hotel, which is conveniently located across from the SMU campus. Let me just say this is not your typical tavern. The space is very modern, sexy and zen. I arrived for a late lunch/early dinner. The staff was very friendly and social. It took me more than the usual 2 seconds to decide on a beverage. Right away I noticed they have a good scotch selection. ( I will revisit the scotch and cigars soon). Chef Taylor Kearney has recently taken over the menu and it shows. It's upscale southern cuisine. I found out a lot of the meats are cured on site. As I looked over the dinner menu, I realized this was going to be awesome! I ordered the BBQ special. My guest and I was a bit ambitious, because it was enough to share with 2 others. We were served chicken, brisket, ribs, and sausage. Our sides were potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw. It was delicious. If I was a toothless grandpa, I'd still be able to eat without using a knife. Every bite was tender and flavorful. Make sure you leave room for desert. The chef pastry's creations are amazing. There is a apple crisp ala mode, a chocolate truffle ( to die for), and a coconut cream pie. My favorite was the chocolate truffle. And I don't even like chocolate which is a testament to how good it is. After eating, we decided to take our drinks to the rooftop patio and just enjoy the view. Will I come back? Heck yeah! I'm looking forward to trying more items on the menu. I can see myself eating here before or after SMU home games. This place is seriously delicious with very fresh ingredients. The chef is quite creative with his (or her) combination of flavors. This is surprisingly good and worth trying - the atmosphere here is upbeat without being over the top frenetic. Highly recommend it when you are in the Dallas area (across from SMU)! read more

This is a cool place for the hotel guests as well as locals. With large windows looking out Hillcrest to the outdoor patio and SMU, there is a lot of natural light and openness to the atmosphere which I love. I had the lamb sirloin for dinner which was delicious! Highly recommend. I shared the Chocolate Trifle with my dad, and there was not a scrape left. The pastry chef was nominated best in Dallas by some organization, I don't remember which. All I know is that I LOVED that dessert. Light yet perfectly fulfilling. The bar has a great selection as well and good bartender or bar craftsman as some may say with their unique cocktails. The only reason I take a star away if for the slow service. I was not in a hurry, so all was well, but it was pretty empty (about six or seven other tables) with two or three waiters, and it took a while to place our entree and dessert order. The were very friendly and did everything right, so I cannot complain much. It was just not quite a 5-star experience for a casual chic restaurant in this area. We were really looking forward to going to the restaurant at the lumen. The positives are: the place is great looking, valet parking very hospitable, onion soup was great, spaetzle and mushrooms were very good and service was good. On the needs to improve, the scallops were ok, mixed green salad was very salty, and pork schnitzel was a brick. The sides finally showed as we were finishing our entrees. The waiter picked up on our unhappiness around the timing and did not charge us. Had the pork schnitzel at stock and barrel a couple days ago and it was awesome. Recommendation for future visit: go for drinks at bar and have the onion soup. read more

My mom and I had lunch here today and we were very pleased! We started with the Black-eyed pea hummus with little corn bread muffins. The hummus was a delicious revelation. I'm totally stealing that to make for myself! And the corn bread was moist and flavorful. I had the oyster po boy. Very good! There was little enough breading to actually taste the oysters and the French fries were beautifully seasoned with coarse salt. Mom had the Thai tempura shrimp salad. She loved it and she's not the easiest person to please. Then for dessert, we shared a chocolate trifle! It was so delicious. Our waiter called the pastry chef a goddess and after that dessert, I must say I agree! It was the right amount of differing flavors and not too sweet, so we didn't feel over-sugared when we were done. With a French press of amazing local coffee, we felt well fed and very happy. Our waiter was a real pro, so helpful and friendly, with that professional server ubiquitousness, where we never wanted for anything, but he never got in our way. One of the best dirty martinis and espresso martinis in town. We love to pop in during the in-between menu hours; highly recommend the Cobb salad or the burger. Sometimes service is a little slow, but the vibe is nice, there are TVs behind the bar, and it's conveniently located in Highland Park. read more
