Almost exactly a year ago, I went to Front Range Anglers to buy my first-every fly rod. I'd fished as a kid, but knew absolutely nothing about fly fishing. Maggie spent well over an hour getting me set up with what has turned out to be a perfect setup for the mountain creeks around Colorado, and helped me stay within what I realize in retrospect was a really tight budget for fly fishing gear. Every time I go into the shop I'm treated well, all my dumb questions are answered patiently and accurately, and I never feel rushed or pressured into buying anything. I'm lucky enough to live just a few blocks away but even if I didn't it would be worth the trip to visit these folks. Highly recommended! read more

George took two of my sons and I out for a full day on the Big Thompson, and we had a fabulous time. My sons had been fly fishing 2-3 times, without having caught a single fish. FRA and JB did an outstanding job! I have fished in many areas and i have had guides of all types but JB was without question the best guide that I have ever had. His knowledge of the area and the streams was second to none. I feel one of the things that set the tone right out of the gate was JB's communication. We spoke 2 weeks prior to the trip and again 1 week prior to the trip, he even texted me the night before. He showed me a bunch of new techniques and showed me how to better read the stream. The fishing was excellent! I caught a lot of brookie's and brown's. When I need a guide again (which I will) FRA and JB will be my first call. read more

After years of talking about it, Dad and I finally arranged a father-daughter day on the water. Our guide par excellence, Wallace, readily discussed many possible destinations with us ahead of time, and we chose a location close to home for own logistics. Fish were caught, skills learned, and memories made. Considering one of us has only ever caught colds before, hooking a bunch of good sized rainbows and wild browns was thrilling! Wallace had tremendous patience and many suggestions for us novices, and was a stellar guide who kept switching rigs and tactics to help get the fish on the lines. Our morning started with still water that was unexpectedly murky, but even that didn't stop us from hauling up a few big ones early on in the day. Being on the river was a welcome escape from our daily routines, and the scenery could not have been nicer - when we noticed it the few times we took our eyes off the moving water. Horrible customer service. They ran a deal on zozi.com for an Intro to Fly Fishing which I bought for my husband. He called them once to redeem, said they'd call him back. Never did. I called twice more. Said they'd call me back, never did. I then called again and got the email address of whom to talk to, so sent him an email, and CC'ed person I spoke to. Never heard back. Each time we called we spoke with someone different too. After over a week of trying to redeem this, we gave up, and called zozi for a refund. I'm not sure why you would run a deal if you have no interest in taking care of it, but I wouldn't do business with these guys at all. read more

We were in town for a wedding and had the morning to ourselves and had always wanted to try fly fishing. I cannot say how amazing our experience was. Booking was extremely easy and we kept having to make changes because more and more people wanted to jump in. They were able to accommodate our growing group with the extra guides. Have been in a few times and each visit is better than the last. These guys are such a big help to a beginner fly fisherman. I took the full day tour with Tim and it was an amazing experience. We caught lots of fish, but more importantly, he took so much time answering questions and teaching me the detail stuff. We even got into turning over rocks and searching out some flys. My fiance and I took an 8-hour guided tour with JB along the bear creek by lair o' the bear park. It was our first time fly fishing and our first time using tenkara style rods. My son and I went out with Nick DelVecchio and had an excellent experience. We originally thought we wanted to fish Boulder Creek to scout the creek for future reference, but Nick suggested the Big Thompson was better and he was right. We both caught plenty of fish to make it a great outing. In addition, Nick went out of his way and drove us back to Boulder by way of Nederland to give us a tutorial on Boulder Creek. Definitely above and beyond what was expected. Nick is a very personable guy which made the day even more enjoyable. Zach Lass was who we dealt with when arranging our trip and I must also compliment Zach as he was very responsive and clear in his communications. This is a very nice and well run fly shop. I live in southern Colorado, so I haven't made my way up to this area much, however, based on this experience, I will definitely look in this direction more often in the future. read more

Front Range Anglers and guide, George Gumerman, came through again for a great day. This was our second guided fly fishing adventure with George through Front Range and the whole experience was organized and easy. Once booked (over the phone) George called to talk about what was in store, where he thought we should fish and asked about any concerns or special requests we might have. The day of the trip we met George at Front Range, bought our day fishing licenses, got our gear and off we went. Once we got to the designated fishing spot, George set us up to fish, gave us lessons on the best casting, etc., was by our sides the entire time to put point us in the right direction (ie - best fishing spots), fix hooks/flies/weights on our lines - basically whatever we needed to fish and have fun. I cannot recommend Front Range Anglers and/or George enough - what a wonderful day - made so easy by all involved. read more

Outstanding outfitter. When it was time to graduate beyond the simple all-in-one pack I got when I first moved to Colorado, I went to the shop on a lark. Both the owner, and one of their guides/salespeople (Ben McGee) helped me pick out a rod and reel, and suggested techniques to help improve my fishing. It's been a year and a half later, and I've broken the rod, had FRA help me replace it, and spent more than I should on flies. I can't help it! Everything these guys have recommended has worked, and I am terrible about losing flies to trout that clean my tippet. My catches increase in number and size, and I hope it only gets better. Tip-top shop and well worth stopping by just to chat, get advice, and get a feel for the water around town. Don't worry about feeling like you're not patronizing the store, you'll probably be spending $20 on flies anyways! read more

Excellent knowledge, very helpful, strong bench of fly fishing guides, excellent product selection. They do a great job of keeping their inventory well stocked. The shop is also a beautiful shop and very enjoyable to be in. Again though the value here is the comprehensive collective knowledge and friendly help you get from the people who work there. I am a hard core fly fisherman and many shops can be intimidating and uninviting especially for beginners. I've been in literally hundreds of shops. I've never fly fished before and vacationing in CO, seemed like the opportune time. My husband was at a conference, so I booked a fly fishing outing for myself and our children, ages 12 and 10. FRA was very communicative throughout the process, before, and after. Checking to make sure they answered any questions or concerns I might have. Our boy can be very talkative and lacking the ability to pay attention and not think HE already knows how to do it, so I was concerned this skill might be too much for his temperament. They paired us up with Alex. We met him on Wednesday morning at the shop and he helped us get all the gear on and drove us to the streams. He patiently coached my kids through the basics and after instructing me and going back to check on my son, my daughter (the 12 yr old) caught a brown trout on her own! We had the best luck in the morning. By noon, bites had pretty much disappeared. Alex took us to 3 different locations. All of them beautiful, and yet a bit of a challenge to get to considering you had to climb down rocks or banks and wander through head-high weeds/shrubs at times. Soon, my son caught a brown trout too, and then my daughter a 2nd. We had booked the 1/2 day excursion. And I was just happy to have had some bites and enjoy my kids catching fish. But Alex re-rigged my rod for the conditions and lo-and-behold I caught a beautiful rainbow trout. End of excursion! Alex took our pictures with our catches and sent them to us via email. This way we didn't have to carry my phone, which was not water proof. It was a perfect way to tryout fly fishing. I loved their shop, their staff and the attention to customer service. We booked a half day fly fishing trip through Zach with our awesome guide Alex this past weekend. It was just my husband and I and we booked Saturday morning for a Sunday morning trip - so that was awesome to be able to do that so last minute. Zach was the nicest guy - making sure we got our reservation, sending a confirmation email, and then was the guy at the shop who helped us get set up with our fishing licenses & equipment. Could not have asked for a friendlier guy to get started with. Alex, our guide, drove us up to Estes National Park and was super nice, fun conversation. I hear you don't have to drive with the guide up there, but I'm glad we did because I felt like it was a good bonding minute before fishing. Alex was really nice and patient as we got the hang of things. He absolutely knew what he was doing and was really helpful anytime the hooks got caught or needed changing, etc. If we lived closer, we would do that way more often. It was the highlight of our Colorado trip by far. You guys rule. Absolutely would recommend this crew to anyone even remotely interested in a great outdoors day whether you care to catch fish or not. read more

First Class Establishment with Excellent Staff. After moving to Boulder from Louisiana, I walked into FRA with no experience fly fishing whatsoever. My grandfather had recently given me his old fly rod, reel and other equipment--so I brought it into the shop to figure out what was what. Zach Lass, the guide manager, spent over an hour with me sorting through the gear and getting me set up to fish. I enrolled in the $80 half day intro class taught by Wallace Westfedlt. The class was excellent--we went through the basics (from entomology to casting) and I would highly recommend it to anyone getting started (Wallace even brings fresh scones for breakfast). I've since been on two guided trips with Zach Lass (who, I'm pretty sure, could find fish in a desert). My first trip was to Upper Boulder Creek (above the falls) in mid May--even with the snow melt, we caught 15 trout (between to of us) in a half day. My second trip (in early June) was to Upper Big Thompson in RMNP--it was a day I will remember for the rest of my life. Besides the fact that we absolutely tore it up (23 trout between the two of us), the river, the scenery, and the wildlife were stunning. The one regret I have is that I didn't wear sunscreen--I got roasted! For anyone considering getting into fly fishing in Boulder, FRA is the place to learn. For anyone planning a trip to Denver/Boulder to fish, FRA is the place to find your guide. Cheers. read more
