Frit Flagey was my favorite stop on my fry adventure through Brussels. Located in the center of a large cement open space, the hut seems a little bare and out of place. There are some concrete blocks to sit on and eat your fries, but otherwise not a lot of options to easily consume your starchy cone. There wasn't much of a line when I dropped by in the middle of the day, although definitely a steady stream of people dropping by. The staff are very friendly and lively, and helpful if you need to decipher the sauce menu. They can slather the sauce on top in a generous dollop on the fries, or give them to you 2 at a time in side cups. Fries have a hint of savoriness without being too greasy. Deliciously piping hot and starchy, and definitely tasted fresh despite it not being too busy. The sauces I tried were the samourai, which was deliciously spicy. We literally walked by this place and saw the queue and was like huh?! What are people queuing for?! Frites!!! The small/petit is 2.8 and the grande/large is 3.1. The line took around 15-20 min depending on the time of day I guess. There's around ten types of sauces to choose from which really makes this place stand out. Well it was our first official Belgian Frite and we would not dare to go anywhere touristy and this is a more local neighborhood. Excellent choice. We got the Samurai and the Andalouse dips. Dips are .8 cents each. Very delicious fries and the small was perfect don't try to stuff yourself but the large is definitely better value for a 30 cent difference you get a whole lot more fry. Yesss, as good as it gets. I love these types of places that are no fuss (it's two guys in a large stand at the edge of an open concrete area), affordable, great food, worth whatever wait in line (although I didn't really wait -- there were maybe two people in front of me). This was on my list as the place I wanted to get frites before I left Brussels, and the fact that a friend who now lives here also mentioned it, sealed the deal even more. Such fresh frites served in a cone (the small is enough for one hungry person) and with a huge dollop of sauce for your heart's content. The andalouse sauce really hit the spot -- it's a Belgian speciality -- like, a creamy tomato-paste sauce with a kick. Reminds me of thousand island but more tangy -- somewhere between a thousand island and chipotle sauce. Place Flagey has many great restaurants and bars within a very reasonable price range, but this one is by far my favorite. The frites are being cooked as you order, and are served fresh as well. The portion sizing is very large for Brussels (and Europe in general; if you are comparing them with American sizes), even for the smallest one. It took two of us to finish one funnel/cone of fries, so make sure you don't order too much! The fries are well seasoned and very hot when they hand you a portion, so be careful! Make sure to pick a sauce to go with the frites as well. The sauce choices are endless because there are so many options to choose from! I prefer sauce andalouse, Belgian mayonnaise, or ketchup. You can purchase multiple sauces. A very local place that is worth the wait! The line might seem daunting, but the food is delicious, and the service is quick, friendly, and helpful. The menu is also on both sides of the stand, and the prices are listed accordingly. Finest frites in Belgium? Perhaps. Perhaps. Definitely some of the best I've had since I've arrived here, and right at the heart of Ixelles. Frites/fries are probably one of my favorite foods since they're so easy to eat and they tastes good (usually) combine that with the right level of crispiness, to saltiness, and not overly greasy... and you have a winning combo. I've ran into a lot of greasy frites after arriving, and before arriving, but Frit Flagey's weren't greasy and were very light and seemed to be fairly fresh. Some of the smaller fry bits were too crispy and had settled to the bottom of the cone, but the larger fries were perfect. Top it off with a helping of andalouse sauce and you have perfection. The whole thing came to 3,10€ for a large-ish fry with sauce. When we arrived there was a tiny bit of a line outside, and I typically have seen a line everytime we've gone by whenever they were open except when it was heavily rainy. As others noted, they're not particularly friendly from what I've experienced overhearing or just observing people ordering whether in French or English. Just a standard cold business affair. No big deal. I'd really like to have explored the menu with all the different sauce options and side options, but I don't think I could handle another large cone. As much as I love fries, it would be tough. The sauce on top also seems at first not to be enough, but it will do the trick drenching all the fries as you dig through it. But unfortunately they were closed when I got there, so I decided to backtrack a few minutes to Place Flagey to try Brussels' #2 frites powerhouse. Flagey's frites don't have that lard chicken fried after taste that Antoine's does so it gives off an illusion that it might be relatively healthy...er. We've seen this place all over those "Best Frites in Brussels" lists. We've had friends tell us it's the place they go to when they're looking for fries. So, we decided to have a Friday fries day at Frit' Flagey. We've tried a few of the other well touted spots in Brussels and we were hoping, due to the proximity of Frit' Flagey to where we live, that this might become 'our' fries spot. Well, it isn't. The fries were really over cooked and their sauces were, well, bland. When we first arrived there were a small little queue and it didn't take too long before we were at the front ordering our fries. One with mayonnaise and one with andalouse. It didn't take took long either, maybe four or five minutes before we had our fries in hand. They served a few people ahead of us and we're constantly frying up fries. Which is why it's so disappointing that ours were over fried. My andalouse sauce was fine, not much flavor but passable, my wife's mayonnaise in the other hand, had zero flavor. Nothing. Not a hint of mayonnaise flavor. It was just a bland white paste. We didn't even finish all the fires because we just couldn't be bothered to eat them. Really disappointed in this place. Doubt we'll give it another shot. read more

Skip all the touristy fritkots in Brussels! Frit Flagey has some of the best frites i've had. I've tried Fritland in the center, and it cannot compare to this little fritkot. The line here is much shorter as well. They have many choices for sauces, my favorite being samourai since it has a little kick of spice. I've been here twice and the frits are amazing! There's always a long line because the frits are so crispy.

I'd read that this was maybe the best frite stand in Brussels, so as we were in the area, made a journey. Did have to wait in a long queue, but got them in the end and they were tasty. Did my life change? No. They were good frites, nice sauces, but they were frites. I guess I'm not enough of a connoisseur to distinguish between good and great frites, maybe? Anyway, if you're in the area, these are a good option, but I would not travel just for the sake of this stand. There is usually an odd line here. I went later at night and the wait was like 2-4mins. So it wasn't too bad. They have loads of options for dipping. I didn't really want to have to choose and then end up hating my decision, so i went with good ol'fashion catsup. Others I was with had the mayo option. I am not sure what this whole "fries with mayo" thing is about but I am not down with hit. I don't like mayo, as a condiment to anything but tuna sandwich. Going with the status quo here... I'm not sure if I was drunk, but the fish burger I got after barhopping the other night was SO GOOD. I probably was drunk, actually. But the fish burger had to have been at least a 3.5/5, because even when inebriated, I still have (pretty high) standards. I was about to get it without sauce, but then realized that fish often turns out dry, so I opted for "a little bit" of the tartar, and thank goodness, because (1) the tartar was good, and (2) the fish really would have been dry without it. I like that they toasted the bun so it was just the perfect about of crunch as I took the first bite (which burned my tongue, btw, so be careful). M got the regular hamburger with ketchup, and he didn't quite like it. I didn't bother to try because I was so infatuated with my fish burger. All I can say is that he usually loves his hamburgers, but this time, he preferred my option. I also decided we needed a large order of fries with andoulaise sauce. It came with two mini fork-toothpicks (in my drunken state, these looked like deformed tritons) for consumption convenience. The fries were great. A friend lived nearby a couple of years ago and wanted to visit the area again and told us it wouldn't be complete without a stop at Frit Flagey. We visited around 16.00 on a Saturday, which was perfect timing. There wasn't much of a line (I hear you sometimes have to wait for an hour, while we were still in line a lot of people arrived and the wait was probably about 30 minutes) and it only took about 15 minutes for us to have our fries in hand. We ordered a large packet of fries with andalouse and to be honest, I was less than impressed. I'm very happy I didn't wait an hour or more for these fries! I was equally as disappointed with Place Jourdan fries as well so maybe I don't think the hype lives up to the fries....I've had much better (homemade) fries at restaurants, where you could taste the fries were not frozen and fried perfectly. I tried this place on my second day in Belgium, and two years later it's still my absolute favorite frites stand. The people who work here aren't the warmest, and the line can be painfully long and slow, but it is totally worth it for some of the best frites in Belgium. No sandwiches here, except hamburgers. This is all about the frites, which are cooked the traditional way. Not frozen (though factory-cut), the fries are cooked in the traditional ox fat (vegetarians beware). They are especially crispy on the outside and delightfully creamy on the inside. They also offer the traditional Belgian meats of strange color and shape. As for sauces, go for the mayonnaise or sauce andalouse -- never ketchup. Expect a messy blob of the sauce plopped atop your unreasonably large cone a frites, and be happy that you're dirtying yourself with such delicious debauchery. This place blows Maison Antoine out of the water. If you're in Brussels for a day, or even just two hours, you need to come eat frites where all the Belgians go. read more

They've got the reputation for the best Frites in Brussels, and they deserve it. Golden, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, not greasy, and they practically disolve in your mouth. I really have to stop myself. Great price, great selection of additions (sauces and meats) and in a pretty good location. Normally I'd dock stars for a long wait, but over here, it's worth it, you get treated like a human being when it finally is your turn, not just a customer. I'll wait for that. The only knock is that there's no seating immediately nearby, and in the winter it can get cold waiting outside! Lured in by the smell, it's a permanent (?) food truck serving mostly made-to-order fries, with mouth watering sauces that you have to ask what's in them. (Andalouse? Just get it). I have been to other places but none can compare! I spent a lot of time in Flagey as I used to work there. The lines can get long but it is worth the wait, even in the snow. We would get our fries and take them to the bars nearby because, again, they are simply better than any other business there that makes their own fries. With their more famous competitor just down the street at Place Jourdan, Frit Flagey deserves its reputation as one of, if not the, best Frite place in Brussels. The difference? Well, perhaps it's a matter of taste. Maison Antoine (Place Jourdan) frites are crispier, and they also enjoy an undeniable advantage: almost all of the local bars allow the frites to be consumed on their premises (not true of Flagey Frit. However, the Frit Flagey, as I've experienced it over almost 4 years, tend to taste fresher, and are a tad softer, perhaps a bit less fried, than Maison Antoine. My favorite place to have fries in Brussels. I like how crunchy they are. I would recommend to go there when it's an unusual time to eat (for instance 16:00 on a weekday) to avoid queues or at 12:00 right before they open.
